This paper presents the high temperature yield and fatigue strength as well as thermophysical properties of two polycrystalline wrought γ/γ′ Co-base superalloys developed for application in a temperature regime above 700 °C. The alloys CoWAlloy1 (Co42Ni32Cr12Al6W3Ti2.5Ta1.5 + Si,C,B,Zr,Hf) and CoWAlloy2 (Co41Ni32Cr12Al9W5 + Ti,Ta,Si,C,B,Zr,Hf) exhibited solidus temperatures of 1070 °C and 1030 °C, respectively, and a γ′ fraction of about 50%. CoWAlloy2 displayed a rather high Young’s modulus of 250 GPa. The two Co-base superalloys showed a good high temperature strength exceeding Ni-base disc alloys U720Li and Waspaloy at temperatures above 800 °C. When comparing the yield strength from tensile and compression tests, no asymmetry could be found. The low-cycle fatigue life of CoWAlloy2 at a total strain amplitude of 0.5% is similar to that of U720Li and Waspaloy (about 370 cycles, R = −1). During long-term aging for 1024 h at 750 °C, no additional phases were formed and the room temperature hardness barely changed.

Summary
Australia’s native biota has evolved in the absence of large ungulates such as those found on other continents (Mulvaney and Kamminga 1999; Janis 2008). Over the past two centuries, however, large ungulate grazers and browsers have been introduced into Australia with varying degrees of success (Ridpath 1991 and references therein). Those introduced into the tropical monsoon region of northern Australia encountered year-round high day and night temperatures, strong annual cycles of high humidity and aridity, annual season rainfall resulting in annual cycles of vegetation growth and senescence, extreme variability in the start and length of the wet and dry seasons, and low-quality vegetation on very infertile tropical soils. The introductions of ungulates into these environments have provided unique opportunities for research into the dynamic relationships between feral mammals and new environments, as well as an opportunity to explore various hypotheses about invasion ecology.
The Asian water buffalo (Bovidae: Bubalus bubalis Lydekker) (or, simply, buffalo) is the most successful of seven introductions of domesticated ungulate grazers that subsequently became feral in the tropical monsoonal region in the north-central region of the continent (Ridpath 1991). From no more than 100 domesticated buffalo released into the wild in the mid-1800s, buffalo numbers grew to ~400 000 in less than 150 years, occupying an area ~224 000 km2 across the major river systems of the north colloquially referred to as the ‘Top End’ of Australia (Ridpath 1991; Skeat et al. 1996; Petty et al. 2007; Figure 21.1).

Most trees in the eucalypt savannas of Australia have hollow cores, or pipes, caused by termite activity, yet little is known about their effect on tree growth or survival. Five hundred and forty-one trees with known growth and survival histories were cored to determine pipe diameters in wooded savanna of Kakadu National Park, north Australia. Generalized linear modelling and multi-model inference was used to analyse frequency and degree of piping relative to initial tree diameter at breast height (dbh), eco-taxonomic group or species of eucalypt. Growth (dbh increment) and survival (4 y) were analysed relative to initial tree size, pipe ratio (pipe diameter:dbh) and eco-taxonomic group. The frequency of piping was strongly dependent on dbh, increasing with size of tree, and was highest in eucalypts. Growth and survival of eucalypts increased with tree diameter and decreased with pipe ratio. For example, from modelled data, 10-cm-diameter trees without pipes grew 0.14 cm y−1 with 85% survival vs. 10-cm trees with pipe ratios of 0.60 which had near-zero growth and only 46% survival. Comparing 40-cm-diameter trees without pipes to those having pipe ratios of 0.80, growth was 0.22 vs. 0.05 cm y−1, with little difference in survival, 97–99%, respectively. Contrary to the suggestion that tree hollows are an adaptive trait whereby trees benefit by the release of nutrients, in the north Australian eucalypt savannas the net effect of termite piping on individual tree growth and survival was negative.
