Association between intimate partner violence and leukocyte telomere length: a retrospective cohort study of 144 049 UK Biobank participants

Aims
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health challenge negatively affecting victims’ health. Telomere length (TL), a marker for biological ageing, might be reflective of the mechanisms through which IPV leads to adverse health outcomes. The objective of the current study was to explore the association between IPV and leucocyte TL.
MethodsWe conducted an analysis using a subset of the UK Biobank (N = 144 049). Physical, sexual and emotional IPV were reported by the participants. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. TL was assayed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We used multivariable linear regressions to test the associations between IPV and TL adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, deprivation, education, as well as symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder in a sensitivity analysis.
ResultsAfter adjusting for sociodemographic factors, any IPV was associated with 0.02-s.d. shorter TL (β = −0.02, 95% CI −0.04 to −0.01). Of the three types of IPV, physical violence had a marginally stronger association (β = −0.05, 95% CI −0.07 to −0.02) than the other two types. The associations of numbers of IPV and TL showed a dose–response pattern whereby those who experienced all three types of IPV types had the shortest TL (β = −0.07, 95% CI −0.12 to −0.03), followed by those who experienced two types (β = −0.04, 95% CI −0.07 to −0.01). Following additional adjustment for symptoms of depression and PTSD, the associations were slightly attenuated but the general trend by number of IPVs remained.
ConclusionsVictims of IPV, particularly those exposed to multiple types of IPVs, had shorter TL indicative of accelerated biological ageing. Given that all three types of IPV are linked to TL, clinical practitioners need to comprehensively identify all types of IPV and those who received multiple types. Further studies should explore the association of violence with changes in TL over time, as well as to which extent biological ageing is a mechanistic factor.

Background
There is evidence that child maltreatment is associated with shorter telomere length in early life.
AimsThis study aims to examine if child maltreatment is associated with telomere length in middle- and older-age adults.
MethodThis was a retrospective cohort study of 141 748 UK Biobank participants aged 37–73 years at recruitment. Leukocyte telomere length was measured with quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and log-transformed and scaled to have unit standard deviation. Child maltreatment was recalled by participants. Linear regression was used to analyse the association.
ResultsAfter adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, participants with three or more types of maltreatment presented with the shortest telomere lengths (β = −0.05, 95% CI −0.07 to −0.03; P < 0.0001), followed by those with two types of maltreatment (β = −0.02, 95% CI −0.04 to 0.00; P = 0.02), referent to those who had none. When adjusted for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, the telomere lengths of participants with three or more types of maltreatment were still shorter (β = −0.04, 95% CI −0.07 to −0.02; P = 0.0008). The telomere lengths of those with one type of maltreatment were not significantly different from those who had none. When mutually adjusted, physical abuse (β = −0.05, 95% CI −0.07 to −0.03; P < 0.0001) and sexual abuse (β = −0.02, 95% CI −0.04 to 0.00; P = 0.02) were independently associated with shorter telomere length.
ConclusionsOur findings showed that child maltreatment is associated with shorter telomere length in middle- and older-aged adults, independent of sociodemographic and mental health factors.

This retrospective study was conducted to determine whether the number of peripherally inserted central-catheter lumens affected the rate of central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in adult patients with acute leukemia. The results show that CLABSI rates were not significantly different between patients with triple-lumen or double-lumen PICCs (22.1% vs 23.4%; P = .827).

Background:
To cope with the rising demand for psychological treatment, evidence-based low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (LiCBT) delivered by trained para-professionals was introduced internationally.
Aims:This pilot study aimed at examining the effectiveness of LiCBT in Hong Kong.
Method:This study was of an uncontrolled pre- and post-treatment design, testing LiCBT at a local community mental health centre in Hong Kong. Two hundred and eighty-five Chinese adult help-seekers to the centre attended two or more sessions of LiCBT delivered by trained para-professionals. These participants also rated their depression and anxiety on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7), respectively, at pre- and post-treatment.
Results:Comparison of the pre- and post-treatment PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores of 285 participants indicated significant improvements in depression and anxiety with large effect sizes (depression: d = 0.87; anxiety: d = 0.95). For those participants reaching the clinical level of either depression and/or anxiety at pre-treatment (n = 229, 80.4%), they reported even larger effect sizes (depression: d = 1.00; anxiety: d = 1.15). The recovery rate was 55.9% with a reliable improvement rate of 63.9%. An average of 5.6 sessions was offered to the participants with each session spanning a mean of 42 minutes. The baseline clinical conditions and participants’ educational level were predictive of post-treatment recovery.
Conclusions:The results supported the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of LiCBT for depression and anxiety at a Hong Kong community mental health centre. The effect sizes and the recovery and reliable improvement rates achieved were comparable to those reported from countries such as the UK and Australia.

Summary
Introduction
The main purpose of this study is to provide an overview of library and information science (LIS) students’ actual experiences in using mobile phones or smartphones for study and learning purposes and their perception of the usefulness and effectiveness of mobile phones for learning in general. The study is focused on LIS undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Tsukuba from Japan (UT).
Recent studies of mobile learning in higher education generally suggest that mobile phones are increasingly being used for learning purposes (Dahlstrom, Dziuban and Walker, 2012; Dresselhaus and Shrode, 2012; Cheon et al., 2012; Bomhold, 2013; Gikas and Grant, 2013; Park and Jung, 2013; Kim, Ilon and Altmann, 2013). A few studies involving students from Hong Kong and Japan (Kukulska- Hulme et al., 2011; Ang et al., 2012; Bibby, 2011) indicate students’ tendencies to use mobile phones or smartphones for learning as well.
Objectives
This study is based on current research findings on learning with mobile phones and the following research questions were identified:
How do LIS students use mobile phones or smartphones in their everyday lives?
Do LIS students use mobile phones or smartphones for learning purposes?
Do LIS students use mobile phones or smartphones to access library services for learning purposes?
Do LIS students at HKU and UT differ in their use of mobile phones or smartphones for learning purposes?
Research methods
A qualitative research methodology was applied to this study. The data was collected through an asynchronous online focus group (Williams et al., 2012), while a Facebook page titled ‘LISEXCHANGE’ was used as a platform for online discussions. The Facebook page was established by researchers from HKU and UT: undergraduate and graduate students of LIS programmes from both universities were encouraged to participate in discussions about using smartphones for everyday needs, focusing on learning purposes. The discussions were initiated and moderated by researchers.
Altogether 13 students from HKU and 5 students from UT actively took part in online discussions. The empirical materials gathered contained 42 postings (34 posts from HKU students and 8 posts from UT students). The study was conducted over a period of three months, from October to December 2013.
Single Dose versus Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Meningiomas

Objective:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) compared to fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy (FSRT) for meningiomas treated over a seven year period.
Methods and materials:Of the 53 patients (15 male and 38 female) with 63 meningiomas, 35 were treated with SRS and the 18 patients with tumors adjacent to critical structures or with large tumors were treated with FSRT. The median doses for the SRS and the FSRT groups were 1400 cGy (500- 4500 cGy) and 5400 cGy (4000-6000 cGy) respectively. Median target volumes for SRS and FSRT were 6.8 ml and 8.8 ml respectively. The median follow-up for the SRS and FSRT groups were 38 months (4.1-97 months) and 30.5 months (6.0-63 months) respectively.
Results:The five-year tumor control probability (TC) for benign versus atypical meningiomas were 92.7% vs. 31% (P=.006). The three-year TC were 92.7% vs. 93.3% for SRS vs. FSRT groups respectively (P=.62). For benign meningiomas, the three-year TC were 92.9% vs. 92.3% for the SRS group (29 patients) vs. FSRT group (14 patients) respectively (P=.77). Two patients in the SRS group and one in the FSRT group developed late complications.
Conclusion:Preliminary data suggest that SRS is a safe and effective treatment for patients with benign meningiomas. Fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy with conventional fractionation appeared to be an effective and safe treatment alternative for patients not appropriate for SRS. A longer follow-up is required to determine the long-term efficacy and the toxicity of these treatment modalities.

Electrical characterization of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics with scanning probe based techniques has been carried out. In particular, conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and scanning impedance microscopy (SIM) have been used to demonstrate the presence, shape and size in CCTO ceramics of the different electrically domains, both at the grain boundaries and within the grains. The electrical characteristics of single grains and of single domains have been evaluated and it has been observed that the conductive grains are surrounded by insulating grain boundaries.

We report a non-volatile, write-once-read-many times (WORM) memory device based on a simple organic-inorganic heterojunction. The organic film used is 9, 9-dihexylfluorene and Eu-complexed benzoate (PF6Eu (DBM)), which contains both electron-donor (9, 9-dihexylfluorene) and electron-acceptor (europium complex) groups. The inorganic n-type silicon substrate is used as the bottom electrode, while the Al is used as the top electrode. Under current-voltage testing, the device is able to switch from one initial non-conducting state (OFF) to a conducting state (ON) once a threshold voltage is reached under the first positive sweep. The “OFF” state is not recoverable with subsequent negative sweep after the device is turned “ON”. The ON/OFF current ratio is around 4×104. Diode rectifying characteristics is also observed for the turned-on device with a current ratio of 7×104, which is essential to address one memory cell in large passive matrix circuits. Reliability test is carried out and the device is able to sustain its “ON” state for at least 12 hours without any external bias.
