Summary
Introduction
Hong Kong is a small, densely settled Special Administrative Region of China (the HKSAR). Its 2014 mid-year population of some 7.3 million persons had a median age of 42.8 years, with 14.7% aged 65 and, importantly, 4.4% aged over 80 (Census and Statistics Department, 2015a). These percentages of older persons have increased considerably over the past 30 years, as Hong Kong's population has aged demographically, and the HKSAR now also has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. It faces its most rapid period of population ageing over the next 20 years, with the age 65-plus group set to comprise almost 23% of the ‘usually resident’ population by 2024 and 30% in 2034, when the median age will be 50. Indeed, United Nations projections indicate that the HKSAR will probably be the sixth oldest territory in the world by 2050, with a median age of almost 53 years (UNDESA, 2015), 10 years older than at present. Clearly, therefore, with a considerable population that is already elderly and the likelihood of very considerable future increase in the proportion of older persons, questions of age-friendliness on all the main domains of the World Health Organization (WHO)'s (2007a, 2007b) age-friendly cities and communities (AFCC) model are of prime consideration as well as certain local additional AFCC characteristics (Wong et al, 2015, 2017). By August 2017, ten HKSAR districts had embarked on the AFCC commitments and received recognition from the WHO by being included in its list of AFCC communities. Hong Kong is also one of 15 countries and territories involved in pilot testing a set of indicators of age-friendliness, under the WHO Kobe Centre for Health Development (WHO, 2015).
Hong Kong is a highly urbanised small territory of only 1,100 square kilometres and, while about 40% of the HKSAR comprises protected country parks, geographical reasons mean that the population is concentrated in only about 25% of the land area. Therefore, overall population density is among the highest in the world, at 6,690 per square kilometer in 2014. In places such as Kwun Tong, the most densely populated district and located in Kowloon, density reaches 57,250 persons per square kilometer (Hong Kong Government, 2015).

The methanol multi-beam (MMB) survey has produced the largest and most complete catalogue of Galactic 6.7-GHz methanol masers to date. 6.7-GHz methanol masers are exclusively associated with high-mass star formation, and as such provide invaluable insight into the Galactic distribution and properties of high-mass star formation regions. I present the statistical properties of the MMB catalogue and, through the calculation of kinematic distances, investigate the resolution of distance ambiguities and explore the Galactic distribution.

Foreign-body ingestion is relatively common in the pediatric population and most objects pass through the gastrointestinal tract with minimal complications. Popular toy magnetic construction sets have resulted in numerous reports in the literature of serious complications including death following ingestion of multiple magnets. We report a case of a 5-year-old girl who presented to our emergency department with nonbilious vomiting and mild abdominal pain after accidentally ingesting 2 magnets 10 hours apart. Abdominal radiography showed the presence of 2 magnets, and a laparoscopy revealed multiple areas of bowel wall necrosis and perforation requiring subsequent laparotomy for repair of the bowel wall and retrieval of the magnets. This report aims to alert emergency care physicians of the necessity for early surgical referral with any multiple magnet ingestion to prevent severe complications.

The results of the first complete survey for 6668-MHz CH3OH and 6035-MHz excited-state OH masers in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds are presented. A new 6668-MHz CH3OH maser in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been detected towards the star-forming region N 160a, together with a new 6035-MHz excited-state OH maser detected towards N 157a. We also re-observed the previously known 6668-MHz CH3OH masers and the single known 6035-MHz OH maser. Neither maser transition was detected above ~0.13 Jy in the Small Magellanic Cloud. All observations were initially made using the CH3OH Multibeam (MMB) survey receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope as part of the overall MMB project. Accurate positions were measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). In a comparison of the star formation maser populations in the Magellanic Clouds and our Galaxy, the LMC maser populations are demonstrated to be smaller than their Milky Way counterparts. CH3OH masers are under-abundant by a factor of ~50, whilst OH and H2O masers are a factor of ~10 less abundant than our Galaxy.

A new 7-beam methanol multibeam receiver is being used to survey the Galaxy for newly forming massive stars, that are pinpointed by strong methanol maser emission at 6.668 GHz. The receiver, jointly constructed by Jodrell Bank Observatory (JBO) and the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), was successfully commissioned at Parkes in January 2006. The Parkes-Jodrell survey of the Milky Way for methanol masers is two orders of magnitude faster than previous systematic surveys using 30-m class dishes, and is the first systematic survey of the entire Galactic plane. The first 53 days of observations with the Parkes telescope have yielded 518 methanol sources, of which 218 are new discoveries. We present the survey methodology as well as preliminary results and analysis.

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a rare and dramatic complication of hyperthyroidism. This series summarizes the clinical and metabolic features of 10 patients who presented to the Western and Sunshine hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, between 1997 and 2002 with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP). TPP classically presents with proximal lower-limb weakness in the setting of a low potassium level and biochemical evidence of thyrotoxicosis: low thyroid-stimulating hormone levels along with elevated free thyroxine (FT4) or free triiodothyronine (FT3). The challenge for emergency physicians is to recognize the association with thyroid disease, since features of hyperthyroidism may not be apparent on history and examination. Acute treatment with potassium supplements and long-term management is aimed at achieving an euthyroid state. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is more common in Asian populations; however, increasing immigration from Asia will lead to higher TPP prevalence in Western countries.

The sol-gel process can be used to produce porous inorganic matrices that are doped with organic molecules. These doped gels can be used as a quantitative method for the spectrophotometric determination of trace concentrations of metallic ions. For the detection of hexavalent chromium, malachite green was used as the dopant. Preliminary results indicate concentrations on the order of 5 ppb are detectable using this method.
