Objectives
To identify the impact of body mass index (BMI) and Western advertising and media on the stage of the nutrition transition among Jordanian women, and to evaluate their impact on eating styles and body image.
DesignA randomised cross-sectional survey that included a variety of culturally measured Likert-type scales and body size images. In addition, BMI was calculated based on measured height and weight.
SettingIn the homes of the participants. The data were collected by female interviewers who worked for the Jordan Department of Statistics.
SubjectsThe sample was based on a random and representative selection of 800 mostly urban Jordanian women. A pre-test sample of 100 women was also used to validate the instruments.
ResultsWomen tended to agree that they ate based on emotional cues. They had high levels of disordered eating attitudes and behaviours and 42.1% were considered restrained eaters. However, these women also had higher than expected body esteem levels and desired a healthy body size. As expected, being obese was associated with a desire to lose weight, being a restrained and emotional eater, and having more disordered eating attitudes and behaviours. Similarly, Western advertising and media were associated with restrained and emotional eating, desired weight loss, and disordered eating attitudes and behaviours.
ConclusionsThere is a need to develop health education materials that explain the influence of obesity on health and the negative psychological and physical consequences of restrained and emotional eating, building on the current cultural preferences of healthy body size. Further implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
Tanglewood After Ten Years

After many visits to Tanglewood during the years 1940 to 1949 one is finally driven to pose the question as to how far this great summer musical event may really be called a Festival.
I do not think that any extravagant claims have in fact been made for its being “a Festival,” and over the years that magnificent character in music, Dr. Serge Koussevitzky, has been at pains always to emphasize the “student” or “school” aspect of the undertaking of which he is, so to speak, the Alpha and Omega. One cannot begin to discuss Tanglewood without paying the deepest possible tribute to the very real work, effort and love that Dr. Koussevitzky has devoted to this, his child, for the benefit of musical America, young and old. There is no similar event anywhere else in the world—but then, one might say that there is no similar character anywhere else in the world who could in fact have engendered it. Yet after ten years one begins to feel that either the students have outgrown Tanglewood or that Tanglewood has out grown the students. In the opinion of this writer the latter is definitely the case.
Béla Bartók: A Recollection by his Publisher

Much has been written about Béla Bartók since his death in September, 1945; sorrow and regrets have been virtually poured out by some when discussing the last days of this great master. Indeed, harsh words have been uttered that could be interpreted as indicating that he died utterly penniless and completely neglected. This is not true and those who knew him well will vouchsafe that he himself would have had strong views on such statements.
Peter Grimes and Albert Herring

The first-night audience for Peter Grimes at La Scala, Milan, was not unprepared for Benjamin Britten's opera. Fragments had been performed at the Venice International Festival last September, to be followed by two complete radio performances from Rome under Fernando Previtali. Yet on March nth, as the curtain rose—the rebuilt auditorium victoriously obliterating memories of bomb-havoc in a symphony of white and gold—one sensed an atmosphere of keen curiosity concerning this rare phenomenon, an English opera.

The word “Tanglewood” evokes two vivid associations in the mind of the American public—firstly, with Nathaniel Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales, secondly with the great summer music festival held there in recent years by Serge Koussevitzky.

The question of the composer's livelihood is always with us, a source of anxiety to the composer himself, his family, and his friends. It is not the purpose of this article to attempt a solution of the whole problem; and indeed, I should be at a loss to offer a solution were I asked.
Introducing American Ballet

The six weeks' visit of the American Ballet Theatre to Covent Garden, commencing July 2, is a rare event for balletomanes. The Ballet Theatre has won its place during the war years as the foremost American dancing company, giving lengthy seasons at the Metropolitan Opera House in the spring and autumn, and undertaking important tours in many parts of the United States. It should not be confused with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo or the Russian Ballet Company, both of which have been playing in America since they were last seen in England before the war.

With the end of the war the already existing boom in music in the United States has grown still larger. Opera, ballet, symphony concerts, recitals, radio music, and now even musical films are attracting audiences on a scale hitherto unknown. ‘Sold Out’ is a commonplace at the auditoriums, and fees for artists are higher than ever. Such is the season 1945–46. It may be attributed to various causes: relief from war anxiety, returning soldiers, the influence of radio. All of these are important factors, but increased spending power is perhaps the biggest. The public have money to spend—savings, perhaps—and although much of it is going into light entertainment, there is also a remarkable flow in the direction of serious music.

A recent visit to the United States leaves no doubt in my mind that, there as here, the war has stimulated the urge to hear good music to a remarkable degree. The increase is less noticeable than in England, but when it is remembered that the restrictions on entertainment, travel, food, in fact all the commonplaces of peace-time existence, are somewhat less severe than they are here, the boom in music is still a matter for comment.

Much is written and spoken to-day concerning the popularity of concerts. In this connection, ‘concerts’ usually refers to serious orchestral programmes, although a similar measure of success is attendant on musical entertainments of every description, whether for industrial workers, the Forces, or the public at large. This boom in the English musical world is certainly without precedent.
