Cell fate modification is a critical step in preparing cells and tissues for implantation therapeutics. Novel materials possessing physical, mechanical, and chemical properties similar to those found in vivo provide a potential platform in building artificial microenvironments for therapeutic applications and well-defined biointerfaces for examining differentiation potential in stem cell biology. Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS), a novel biocompatible and biodegradable elastomer is one such material. With tunable mechanical properties in the range of common soft tissue, the material provides an invaluable alternative platform for use in cell-to-substrate interaction studies. This paper describes the tunability of PGS mechanical properties based on variations in curing temperatures (130, 140, and 165 °C). We characterized the material by examining properties that include equilibrium Young's modulus (E), glass transition temperature (Tg), loss factor (tan δ), degree of crosslinking, cure kinetics, protein conformational changes, and molecular bonding compositions. Variations in PGS curing temperature provide differences in physical cues presented to the hMSCs, and work is underway to examine the cellular responses of these hMSCs to microstructured PGS. Ultimately, micro- and nanostructured PGS may be useful tools in the maintenance, differentiation, and control of signaling pathways in hMSCs.

Summary
There can be few modern societies which are not tempted by the cynical injunction ‘when history and legend diverge, print the legend'. Michael Stanislawski's study is a bold, often provocative attempt to penetrate the self-serving legends of the period 1825-1855 to discover the true nature of Russian Jewish society and its crucial relationship with the regime of Tsar Nicholas I. His achievement in the exercise of historiographical reevaluation is impressive, exhibiting a richness of content which is taxing to encapsulate in summary. His careful examination of the policy of the tsarist government towards its Jewish population certainly has the effect of exploding a variety of established myths. Rather than simply assuming that the administration was oppressively and irredeemably anti-semitic, Stanislawski sets out to reveal the precise dynamics of tsarist Jewish policy, eventually reaching the conclusion that its attitude was less anti-semitic than dictated by ‘a myopic perception of raison d'etat'. Despite a jacket blurb which promises comparison with tsarist policy towards other minority groups, the study adheres resolutely to a purely Jewish dimension, inferring that the tsarist treatment of the Jews was ‘largely spontaneous’, not ‘anomalous’ and therefore that it can only be ‘egocentric’ to see the Jews as objects of tsarist ‘victimization'. While Nicholas I had a personal interest in the Jewish question, he appears less as a rabid antisemite than as a dynastic victim, promoted by political mischance well above his capabilities, responding vigorously but unimaginatively with crude military solutions, the only kind he could understand. No unanimity or solidarity prevailed within the Council of Ministers on the Jewish issue, with some ministers defending the pre-1827 ‘privileged’ status of Jewry and others demanding a radical new departure geared to integration or even assimilation. Stanislawski endorses the recent view point of such specialists as Flynn and Whittaker that Uvarov, the Minister of Public Enlightenment, was not the caricature reactionary of legend but the leading moderate reformer of the government. With regard to the Jewish question, Uvarov showed himself to be both a persistent eminence grise for reform (most notably behind Kiselev) and an enterprising negotiator with maskilic leaders (like Lilienthal), who were encouraged to entertain hopes that the Russian Tsar might become a latter-day Enlightened Despot. The spectrum of opinion evident within the government (and generally tolerated by Nicholas I) on the Jewish issue totally undermines the contemporary view of a monolithically reactionary tsarist regime.

The contact adhesive forces between two surfaces, one being a soft hemisphere and the other being a hard plate, can readily be determined by applying an external compressive load to mate the two surfaces and subsequently applying a tensile load to peel the surfaces apart. The contact region is assumed the superposition of elastic Hertzian pressure and of the attractive surface forces that act only over the contact area. What are the effects of the degree of surface contamination on adhesive forces? Clean aluminum surfaces were coated with hexadecane as a controlled contaminant. The force required to pull an elastomeric hemisphere from a surface was determined by contact mechanics, via the JKR model, using a model siloxane network for the elastomeric contact sphere. Due to the dispersive nature of the elastomer surface, larger forces were required to pull the sphere from a contaminated surface than a clean aluminum oxide surface.

Organic adhesives are commonly used in the microelectronics industry to bond silicon chips to a wide variety of substrates. The substrates include copper, silver, nickel / palladium, polyimide, and glass‐filled epoxies. The surfaces of these substrates are affected by the processing steps used in the manufacturing process used to produce the final package. The most common adhesives used in the assembly of microelectronic packages are epoxy‐based and there are numerous grades and types to chose from. Therefore, the packaging engineer is faced with the dilemma of what criterion to use to select the best adhesive for a particular package design.
At the crux of the problem is how does one predict adhesion and how does one measure it? It is proposed that the surfaces play an important role in forming the interfacial bond and that strength of the mating surfaces can be characterized in terms of the thermodynamic work of adhesion. Roughness is also a factor but will not be dealt with here. The thermodynamic work of adhesion describes the energy to reversibly separate two surfaces (elastic). Interfacial fracture mechanics may be used to quantify the strain energy release rate for separating two surfaces and contains both elastic and inelastic contributions. This talk will contain a discussion of our studies on the use of a three liquid probe method to determine the thermodynamic work of adhesion and a mixed‐mode bending method to measure interfacial fracture toughness. Moreover, we will comment on the perils of relating the thermodynamic work of adhesion to the interfacial fracture toughness.
