Summary
MacMillan has never lost the direct connection with his homeland. While his link with his cultural identity is not refracted through nostalgia for the lost immediacy of the cultural environment, there is a nostalgia present in MacMillan’s work for what has been ‘lost’ to Scottish culture through the Reformation. MacMillan sees as part of his compositional ‘mission’ to engage in ‘acts of remembrance’, restoring what has been lost. This encompasses a wide spectrum of ideas, from the purely musical, to the connection of music to the spiritual, from a response to the local, to an engagement with the national. Two related works which embody these dialectics are the St John and St Luke Passions. The Passion narrative pervades both MacMillan’s religious works and some of his most abstract compositions. His two completed Passions are determinedly international in their reach and yet reflect a personal commitment to the meaning and significance of the religious narrative. These facets are reflected in the choices MacMillan makes in his approach to the setting: the works draw upon the established traditions of this chapter will explores some of the paradoxes that this creates.

Summary
SIMON HOLT'S ONE-ACT OPERA The Nightingale's to Blame was written between 1996 and 1998 and given its first performance at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival the same year. For this first excursion into the realm of theatre Holt returned to the work of Federico García Lorca. He used David Johnston's translation of the source play, preserving its basic structure: a Prologue and three scenes.
Holt's attraction to the dark, sensuous imagery of Lorca's poetry had resulted, over the previous fourteen years, in four works using words or images from the poems. The opera's title makes direct reference to the bird which the poet used as a symbol for illusion. Lorca's original title for the play was (in translation) The Love of Don Perlimplín for Belisa in the Garden. As a musician himself, he built numerous musical allusions into the play, which has proved attractive to various composers as an opera subject, perhaps most notably Bruno Maderna, whose radiophonic work dates from 1962. Assassinated in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, Lorca did not live to see any of the operatic adaptions of his text. The work occupied him between 1926 and 1929, but fell foul of Spanish censors prior to its planned first performance in 1929,
ostensibly because the theatre company had failed to observe mourning for the recently deceased Queen Mother, [but] in all likelihood it was because the role of a cuckold was to be acted by a retired army officer, which could have damaged the dignity of the military.
It was finally given in 1933 during the period of the Second Republic.
BACKGROUND TO THE OPERA
The play's main character is Don Perlimplín, an ‘aging bachelor’. In the Prologue, his maid Marcolfa, no younger than he, berates him for having passed his fiftieth year and being still unmarried. She draws his attention to the beautiful Belisa, a sensuous woman easily half his age, highly eligible, who lives next door: we hear her singing. Under Marcolfa's prompting Perlimplín calls out loudly; Belisa appears on her balcony, almost unclothed (b. 355). Perlimplín next pays court to Belisa's mother, who agrees to the match: he is wealthy, after all. As Belisa ‘throws open the shutters on her balcony’ (b. 499), the scene changes.

Two patients (G01, J02) with chronic nonfluent aphasia and sentence production deficits received syntactic mapping treatment to improve sentence production. The patients had dramatically different outcomes in that improved syntax production generalized to nontreatment tasks for G01, but not for JO2. To learn how treatment influenced the neural substrates for syntax production, both patients underwent pre- and posttreatment functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of sentence generation. G01 showed more robust activity posttreatment than pretreatment in Broca's area; ventral temporal activity decreased slightly from pre- to posttreatment. Comparison of J02's pretreatment and posttreatment images revealed little change, although activity was more diffuse pre- than posttreatment. Findings suggest that for G01, rehabilitation led to engagement of an area (Broca's area) used minimally during the pretreatment scan, whereas for J02, rehabilitation may have led to more efficient use of areas already involved in sentence generation during the pretreatment scan. fMRI findings are discussed in the context of sentence-production outcome and generalization. The British Library recently acquired the sketch material for a good number of works by Peter Maxwell Davies, ranging from some of the earliest pieces up to, at the time of writing, music of the early 1990s. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the available material and to demonstrate some of the valuable insights it affords into the composer's working methods.

No Composer Comes Fully-Formed into the world, and Peter Maxwell Davies is no exception; but many of the ideas and concepts on which his mature style rests are present in seminal form in the first published works. No compositions are available for general study before the Trumpet Sonata, op.l (1955), but those that have been seen by friends and colleagues are variously described as being ‘remarkably traditional’ and showing influences ‘such as Bartók’.

Electronic somatic cell counts (ESCC) and relative cell volume distributions (RCVD) in milk samples were obtained simultaneously on a Coulter Counter Model TA and their potential assessed, either singly or in combination, for identifying mastitic quarters and cows in 2 herds. Using log (ESCC) alone the probability Pm of misclassifying quarters infected with major pathogens was 6–7 % for herd 1 and 18–1% for herd 2. The inclusion of RCVD variables with log (ESCC) did not substantially improve the chance of detecting quarters infected with major pathogens. However, the RCVD variables did improve the chance of identifying quarters infected by major and minor pathogens compared to the use of log (ESCC) alone, the Pm figures being reduced by about one third.
When testing composite quarter samples, where milk from infected quarters was diluted with that from uninfected quarters, the inclusion of RCVD variables decreased the Pm compared to the use of log (ESCC) alone. In herd 1 the improvement was from 26–1 to 3·0 %, while in herd 2 the effect was less marked, the Pm being reduced from 28–6 to 21–6%. However, as the RCVD assessment is provided simultaneously with ESCC, the additional information is obtained at minimal cost.
