In recent years, a variety of efforts have been made in political science to enable, encourage, or require scholars to be more open and explicit about the bases of their empirical claims and, in turn, make those claims more readily evaluable by others. While qualitative scholars have long taken an interest in making their research open, reflexive, and systematic, the recent push for overarching transparency norms and requirements has provoked serious concern within qualitative research communities and raised fundamental questions about the meaning, value, costs, and intellectual relevance of transparency for qualitative inquiry. In this Perspectives Reflection, we crystallize the central findings of a three-year deliberative process—the Qualitative Transparency Deliberations (QTD)—involving hundreds of political scientists in a broad discussion of these issues. Following an overview of the process and the key insights that emerged, we present summaries of the QTD Working Groups’ final reports. Drawing on a series of public, online conversations that unfolded at www.qualtd.net, the reports unpack transparency’s promise, practicalities, risks, and limitations in relation to different qualitative methodologies, forms of evidence, and research contexts. Taken as a whole, these reports—the full versions of which can be found in the Supplementary Materials—offer practical guidance to scholars designing and implementing qualitative research, and to editors, reviewers, and funders seeking to develop criteria of evaluation that are appropriate—as understood by relevant research communities—to the forms of inquiry being assessed. We dedicate this Reflection to the memory of our coauthor and QTD working group leader Kendra Koivu.1

Objectives:
Prolonged survival of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on environmental surfaces and personal protective equipment may lead to these surfaces transmitting this pathogen to others. We sought to determine the effectiveness of a pulsed-xenon ultraviolet (PX-UV) disinfection system in reducing the load of SARS-CoV-2 on hard surfaces and N95 respirators.
Methods:Chamber slides and N95 respirator material were directly inoculated with SARS-CoV-2 and were exposed to different durations of PX-UV.
Results:For hard surfaces, disinfection for 1, 2, and 5 minutes resulted in 3.53 log10, >4.54 log10, and >4.12 log10 reductions in viral load, respectively. For N95 respirators, disinfection for 5 minutes resulted in >4.79 log10 reduction in viral load. PX-UV significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2 on hard surfaces and N95 respirators.
Conclusion:With the potential to rapidly disinfectant environmental surfaces and N95 respirators, PX-UV devices are a promising technology to reduce environmental and personal protective equipment bioburden and to enhance both healthcare worker and patient safety by reducing the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

Alternative herbicide formulations may have the potential to reduce atrazine leaching. This study was conducted to determine if starch-encapsulation produced using an extrusion process or several acrylic polymer additives reduced atrazine leaching in soil columns packed with Plainfield sand (98% sand and 0.7% organic matter). Three watering regimes were evaluated to determine the effects of water volume and rate of application on atrazine movement When 7.6 cm of water (0.44-pore volumes) was applied over 2 h, polymer treatments reduced atrazine movement from the soil surface by 9 to 21% compared to atrazine without the additives. With increased water volume and time, the effectiveness of several polymer treatments diminished. Acrysol ASE-108 and G110 polymers (mixed with atrazine at a 1:1 ratio) most effectively reduced atrazine leaching over all watering regimes. Starch encapsulation was more effective than any polymer additive in retarding atrazine movement Increasing the water volume from 7.6 to 15.2 cm (0.88-pore volumes) did not increase leaching of starch-encapsulated atrazine. Ninety-nine percent of the starch-encapsulated atrazine was retained in the top 5 cm of the column compared to only 18 and 13% of the dry flowable formulation (DF) when 0.44- and 0.88-pore volumes of water were applied over 2 and 4 h, respectively. When 0.88-pore volumes of water were applied over 12 d, 81% of the starch-encapsulated atrazine was retained in the upper 5 cm of the column compared to only 5% of the DF formulation of atrazine. This study indicates that starch encapsulation reduces atrazine movement to a greater extent than polymer additives and suggests that starch encapsulation may be an effective method of reducing atrazine leaching.

The incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has increased in communities and in healthcare facilities in the United States since the mid-1970s. Although MRSA often is thought of as a nosocomial infection problem because it is encountered in facilities of all types and sizes, it also causes many community-acquired infections. Approaches to control of MRSA vary widely, and there is lack of agreement on the most appropriate measures to control MRSA in healthcare facilities. The wide variation in approaches is due, in part, to the lack of data establishing the efficacy of specific control measures. As a result, the approaches that have been advocated have resulted in confusing and often conflicting recommendations and control measures. In some settings, there also have been unreasonable barriers and administrative hurdles that delay or prevent the transfer of patients between acute care and nursing (extended care) facilities.

This book is composed of a set of chapters contributed by past and present collaborators of the Nobel laureate Sir Andrew Huxley, covering the areas of muscle research to which he has made major contributions. The purpose of the book is to discuss the way that muscle works, asking questions at a fundamental level about the molecular basis of muscle tone production and muscle contraction. The majority of the chapters are concerned with muscle physiology and the relation between structure and function. The process of activation of muscle is dealt with, together with the mechanism of contraction itself. Although most of the book concerns itself with vertebrate skeletal muscle, several of the chapters deal with cardiac muscle. The book also features two introductory chapters discussing Sir Andrew's achievements in both nerve and muscle physiology. All those interested in the structure and function of muscle, or cell motility in general, will wish to read this book.

Summary
Light microscopy: sliding filament theory
Andrew Huxley switched from nerve to muscle research in 1951 immediately after completing the papers with Hodgkin on the squid giant axon. He later wrote, explaining the change: “For one thing I had never worked on anything but nerve, and for another, there was at that time (and indeed for a good many years after) no obvious way of pushing the analysis of excitation to a deeper level” (A. F. Huxley, 1977). Huxley's interest in muscle had been kindled when he took over the lectures on muscle to the final-year undergraduate students at Cambridge from David Hill (son of A. V. Hill, and himself a fine muscle physiologist). David Hill passed on his lecture notes, which included a description of some of the nineteenth-century observations of muscle using light microscopy. A number of authors had accurately described the appearance of striated muscle and the way in which the striations change during contraction, though there was a certain amount of conflict in the subsequent literature, particularly about which of the bands – the A-band or the I-band – changes in length when a muscle fibre is stretched or contracts (A. F. Huxley, 1977).
In 1951, knowledge of the structures underlying the striations was sketchy. It was thought that the muscle proteins actin and myosin existed as a complex that ran from end to end of a muscle, and theories of contraction involved a folding of this complex (e.g., Astbury, 1947). Early electron microscopy of muscle using longitudinal sections seemed to confirm this view, apparently showing that the filaments in the Aband and the I-band were continuous, though it was soon to be shown be shown that myosin was located in the A-band.

Summary
Introduction
My first degree was in physics, but I became interested in the structure of biological macromolecules in my final year, and went on to do a Ph.D. in protein crystallography. I found it very frustrating having to wait for crystals to grow and decided to change to a research area where I could go into the laboratory in the morning and do a new experiment. The easiest option was to change to fibre diffraction, and muscle seemed a good thing to work on as its structure was less well worked out than many of the other fibrous proteins. However, somewhere along the way to securing a postdoctoral position, I was given an introduction to Andrew Huxley, then head of the Department of Physiology at University College London (UCL), who persuaded me to think seriously about a career in physiology. So I did an M.Sc. in Physiology at UCL and ended up doing a project in Prof's laboratory. My project was to investigate a recent report that the internal resistivity of muscle fibres changed during contraction (it didn't).
After that I joined Prof in his research on the mechanical properties of muscle fibres, taking over where Fred Julian had left off (see Chapter 2). It took several years to make the length step experiments on muscle fibres that led to the cross-bridge theory paper in 1971 (A. F. Huxley & Simmons, 1971b), and the really quantitative experiments were not done until Lincoln Ford arrived.
