Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

The provision of surgery within humanitarian crises is complex, requiring coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders. During the 2011 Humanitarian Action Summit best practice guidelines were proposed to provide greater accountability and standardization in surgical humanitarian relief efforts. Surgical humanitarian relief planning should occur early and include team selection and preparation, appropriate disaster-specific anticipatory planning, needs assessment, and an awareness of local resources and limitations of cross-cultural project management. Accurate medical record keeping and timely follow-up is important for a transient surgical population. Integration with local health systems is essential and will help facilitate longer term surgical health system strengthening.

M82 is the nearest starburst galaxy. It contains two large systems of super star clusters, one being spawned today in the active starforming core, and one produced by an earlier starburst event which coincided with the last orbital passage of its neighbor, M81. The proximity of M82 makes it uniquely valuable for a wide range of studies of massive young clusters and their environments.

We present an analysis of wide-field, far-ultraviolet images of the LMC and SMC obtained by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope. The photometric catalog of over 37,000 stars allows us to make large-scale, statistical studies of massive star formation in OB associations and in the field population. Our results show that: (1) the most probable slope for the initial mass function (IMF) of field stars is Γ = −1.80, slightly steeper than the Salpeter slope; and (2) there doesn't seem to be a single, unique IMF slope for stars in OB associations, with a range of values from Γ = −1.0 to −2.0. We also analyze the stellar vs. diffuse UV flux, and the population of OB star candidates in the field.

We investigate the utility of UV spectra of old stellar populations as diagnostics of galaxy properties. For λ < 3800 Å, the integrated light of old stellar populations is dominated by two components: the hot stars which give rise to the UV upturn phenomenon at far-UV wavelengths, and the stars (i.e. main sequence, and subgiants) that lie closest to the turnoff. The mid-UV radiation from the turnoff varies strongly with metallicity, and less so with age; mid-UV light must be correct for the effect of the independent far-UV upturn component, but this is straightforward. Population synthesis models that account for the flux from the UV upturn can therefore determine the characteristics of the underlying stellar content from the mid-UV spectral region. The age & metallicity dependence of the far-UV 1550 Å is not well understood (see Dorman, O'Connell & Rood 1995, ApJ 442,105) since the mass loss mechanism on the RGB that produces very blue HB stars has no physical model. In contrast mid-UV indicators derive from the turnoff population which best represents the quantities we wish to measure, and are in addition visible at favourable optical wavelengths for z ≲ 1.

It is now possible to probe stellar populations at large lookback times. The Butcher-Oemler Effect in distant clusters is unambiguous evidence for unexpectedly recent evolution of disk galaxies in dense environments, probably through starbursts induced by interactions. Recent applications of the “red envelope” test at z ≲ 1 indicate that some luminous galaxies formed ~ 10-13 Gyr ago.

The properties of the nuclear region of the elliptical galaxy NGC4261 (=3C270), the second brightest radio source in the Virgo cluster, have been studied using high resolution HST images and La Palma WHT spectra.
