The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (WCPCCS) will be held in Washington DC, USA, from Saturday, 26 August, 2023 to Friday, 1 September, 2023, inclusive. The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery will be the largest and most comprehensive scientific meeting dedicated to paediatric and congenital cardiac care ever held. At the time of the writing of this manuscript, The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery has 5,037 registered attendees (and rising) from 117 countries, a truly diverse and international faculty of over 925 individuals from 89 countries, over 2,000 individual abstracts and poster presenters from 101 countries, and a Best Abstract Competition featuring 153 oral abstracts from 34 countries. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the activities related to global health and advocacy that will occur at the Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
Acknowledging the need for urgent change, we wanted to take the opportunity to bring a common voice to the global community and issue the Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action on Addressing the Global Burden of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Diseases. A copy of this Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action is provided in the Appendix of this manuscript. This Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action is an initiative aimed at increasing awareness of the global burden, promoting the development of sustainable care systems, and improving access to high quality and equitable healthcare for children with heart disease as well as adults with congenital heart disease worldwide.

Samples of granulated slag from Scunthorpe, Humberside, collected over several years, vary somewhat in chemical composition reflecting differences in iron-making practice. All contain some melilite and oldhamite crystals and minor amounts of iron along with the glass. Granulated slag from Usinor, Dunkirk, France, has a little more CaO than the Scunthorpe material with crystals of merwinite and oldhamite. Pelletised slag from Redcar, Teeside, is much more vescicular than the granulated material and contains melilite and oldhamite.
The melilite crystals contain many inclusions of oldhamite and iron. They span a wide range within the akermanite-gehlenite series and are non-stoichiometric in composition. The merwinite may have formed largely by quench crystallization. Oldhamite is probably the first phase to form in all the slags. The silicate mineralogy can be explained in terms of the phase relationships within the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO quaternary system. The small difference in composition of the French slags is sufficient for them to fall into the primary phase field of merwinite rather than melilite. Assuming that only a minor proportion of crystals is acceptable in slags for use in Portland Blastfurnace Cement, the present low Al (< 11 % Al2O3) British and French slags are approaching an optimum composition.

The method of achieving efficient and economical servicing with the maximum rate of utilisation of aircraft, is a problem which always confronts the aircraft operator, either a private owner flying his modest machine or a national airline with a variety of large and expensive aircraft. From the point of view of safety, their problems are the same.
Efficient servicing is closely related to safety in so far as the airworthiness aspect is concerned and, under present servicing methods, the direct cost of providing this aspect of safety may well amount to some 20 per cent, of operating costs; to this must be added the delays inseparable from major maintenance work which can reduce earning capacity as a result of the time taken to rectify defects. Invariably the cost to the private owner is higher than he had expected and, unless his aircraft is maintained by a competent servicing organisation, it can be subjected to frequent bouts of unserviceability—usually when he needs it most.
Netmums: a phase II randomized controlled trial of a guided Internet behavioural activation treatment for postpartum depression

Background
Despite the high prevalence of postnatal depression (PND), few women seek help. Internet interventions may overcome many of the barriers to PND treatment use. We report a phase II evaluation of a 12-session, modular, guided Internet behavioural activation (BA) treatment modified to address postnatal-specific concerns [Netmums Helping With Depression (NetmumsHWD)].
MethodTo assess feasibility, we measured recruitment and attrition to the trial and examined telephone session support and treatment adherence. We investigated sociodemographic and psychological predictors of treatment adherence. Effectiveness outcomes were estimated with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Work and Social Adjustment Scale, Postnatal Bonding Questionnaire, and Social Provisions Scale.
ResultsA total of 249 women were recruited via a UK parenting site, Netmums.com. A total of 83 women meeting DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder were randomized to NetmumsHWD (n = 41) or treatment-as-usual (TAU; n = 42). Of the 83 women, 71 (86%) completed the EPDS at post-treatment, and 71% (59/83) at the 6-month follow-up. Women completed an average of eight out of 12 telephone support sessions and five out of 12 modules. Working women and those with less support completed fewer modules. There was a large effect size favouring women who received NetmumsHWD on depression, work and social impairment, and anxiety scores at post-treatment compared with women in the TAU group, and a large effect size on depression at 6 months post-treatment. There were small effect sizes for postnatal bonding and perceived social support.
ConclusionsA supported, modular, Internet BA programme can be feasibly delivered to postpartum women, offering promise to improve depression, anxiety and functioning.

Microsatellite primers are often developed in one species and used to assess neutral variability in related species. Such analyses may be confounded by ascertainment bias (i.e. a decline in amplification success and allelic variability with increasing genetic distance from the source of the microsatellites). In addition, other factors, such as the size of the microsatellite, whether it consists of perfect or interrupted tandem repeats, and whether it is autosomal or X-linked, can affect variation. To test the relative importance of these factors on microsatellite variation, we examine patterns of amplification and allelic diversity in 52 microsatellite loci amplified from five individuals in each of six populations of Cyrtodiopsis stalk-eyed flies that range from 2·2% to 11·2% mitochondrial DNA sequence divergence from the population used for microsatellite development. We find that amplification success and most measures of allelic diversity declined with genetic distance from the source population, in some cases an order of magnitude faster than in birds or mammals. The median and range of the repeat array length did not decline with genetic distance. In addition, for loci on the X chromosome, we find evidence of lower observed heterozygosity compared with loci on autosomes. The differences in variability between X-linked and autosomal loci are not adequately explained by differences in effective population sizes of the chromosomes. We suggest, instead, that periodic selection events associated with X-chromosome meiotic drive, which is present in many of these populations, reduces X-linked variation.

The crystallization of amorphous oxides synthesized by pyrolytic decomposition of mixed Li and Ta 2-ethylhexanoates and alkoxides has been investigated. The study was motivated by thermodynamic considerations that, in the light of experience in other systems, suggest the potential for metastable extension of the LiTaO3 homogeneity range. Materials investigated are described by the general stoichiometry Li1–5xTa1+xO3 and include Li2O contents from 0 to 70 mol% (20.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.2). The samples were prepyrolyzed at 400 °C and subsequently crystallized by heat treatments in air at 550–700 °C for 0.1–100 h. The first product of crystallization for compositions from 30 to 65% Li2O is always the LiTaO3 phase. Extensive characterization by x-ray and neutron diffraction, as well as 7Li-NMR spectroscopy, revealed that this phase evolves with a structure and stoichiometry close to equilibrium. For Li+-deficient compositions, excess Ta5+ is rejected to the amorphous constituent during crystallization and eventually gives rise to the evolution of Ta2O5, with the LiTa3O8 phase suppressed in all cases. Similar observations were made for the Li+-rich compositions, but the evolving second phase is the equilibrium Li3TaO4. The absence of solubility extension in LiTaO3, which appears feasible from a thermodynamic viewpoint, is ascribed to the large differences in mobilities of the Li and Ta species in the parent amorphous oxide resulting from pyrolysis.

Summary
Introduction
The soil environment is complex and infinitely variable (Metting, 1992). The fate of metal contaminants is similarly diverse and dependent on many factors, such as mineral composition and organic content (Krosshavn, Steinnes & Varskog, 1993), and is mediated by physicochemical processes (Zhu & Alva, 1993). Metal contaminants in the soil undergo complex interactions with both organic and inorganic components, and many studies have shown that the basic inorganic aluminosilicate clays, silts, sands and other mineral components are important metal sequestrants (Farrah & Pickering, 1976, 1977; Kuo & Baker, 1980; Harter, 1983; Krosshavn et al., 1993). It is important to recognize, however, that the soil organic component, which contains both living organisms and their decay or metabolic products, also exerts a strong influence on metal retention.
Fungi exist in soils primarily as saprotrophic degraders of organic matter, and also as pathogens of plants and in mycorrhizal associations with plant root systems. Fungi are ubiquitous soil microorganisms, predominant in acidic soils, often comprising the largest pool of biomass (including bacteria, microalgae, actinomycetes, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms and other invertebrates) and organic products under these conditions (Metting, 1992). This, combined with their high surface area to mass ratio, ensures that fungal–metal interactions are of primary importance in the organic soil environment (see Colpaert & Van Tichelin, Chapter 9). This is especially true of acidic soil conditions where metals are more likely to be speciated into soluble and more mobile forms (Hughes & Poole, 1991) and where metal ion/fungal/mineral interactions are more likely to occur due to the predominance of the fungal component of the biota in such soils.

The Cosmic Background Explorer, launched November 18, 1989, has nearly completed its first full mapping of the sky with all three of its instruments: a Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) covering 0.1 to 10 mm, a set of Differential Microwave Radiometers (DMR) operating at 3.3, 5.7, and 9.6 mm, and a Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) spanning 1 to 300 µm in ten bands. A preliminary map of the sky derived from DIRBE data is presented. Initial cosmological implications include: a limit on the Comptonization y parameter of 10−3, on the chemical potential μ parameter of 10−2, a strong limit on the existence of a hot smooth intergalactic medium, and a confirmation that the dipole anisotropy has the spectrum expected from a Doppler shift of a blackbody. There are no significant anisotropies in the microwave sky detected, other than from our own galaxy and a cosθ dipole anisotropy whose amplitude and direction agree with previous data. At shorter wavelengths, the sky spectrum and anisotropies are dominated by emission from ‘local’ sources of emission within our Galaxy and Solar System. Preliminary comparison of IRAS and DIRBE sky brightnesses toward the ecliptic poles shows the IRAS values to be significantly higher than found by DIRBE at 100 μm. We suggest the presence of gain and zero-point errors in the IRAS total brightness data. The spacecraft, instrument designs, and data reduction methods are described.

As a preliminary step to detailed study of the interfaces in SiC particulatereinforced Al alloys, a number of methods of sample preparation have been explored; the resultant artefacts on the thinned foils observed in transmission electron microscopes are discussed and improvements to the preparation procedures are suggested. Initial observations of the microstructure of two alloys differing significantly in their matrix silicon content are presented.

Preston et al (1976) and Burke (1982, these proceedings) have long extolled the virtues of launching a radio telescope into space to increase VLBI baseline lengths and thus angular resolution, and to provide a much enhanced image formation capability. The scientific motivation for this has been covered in a number of memoranda referenced by Burke in these proceedings, and by Anderson et al (1982). Efforts to mobilise western astronomical support for space VLBI met with success in late 1982 at a meeting of US and European radio astronomers in Toulouse, France, at which a decision was taken to propose a joint mission to ESA and NASA. Shortly thereafter, a formal proposal was made to ESA (Anderson et al 1982) for a free flying satellite in an elliptical orbit out to 15000 km from the Earth, designed to observe in concert with the major ground-based VLBI networks and arrays. The mission, dubbed QUASAT, was received favourably in both ESA and NASA, with the result that formal Assessment Studies are scheduled to begin in both agencies in October 1983.

On 1980 February 20 we conducted an 8-station intercontental VLBI experiment in order to study the nucleus and jet of M87 at 1666.6 MHz in right circular polarization. Our array was sensitive to structures from 0.001 to 0.1 arcsec. We made a hybrid map of the nucleus of M87, and also searched for compact structures within the knots of the jet. The map (Figure 1) shows that the nucleus of M87 contains a one-sided jet. This morphology is similar to that observed in many compact extragalactic sources. The position angle of the nuclear jet is 290.5 (±1) degrees, which precisely matches that of the 20 arcsec jet. No bending of the jet through an angle greater than about 2 degrees is observed. The nucleus also contains a large component (>0.1 arcsec) which is elongated along the same position angle as the jet and has a flux density of roughly 1 Jy. This component is fully resolved by the vast majority of our (u, v) points, and we could not map it with standard techniques.

Originally described in phonolitic rocks from the Dunedin district, New Zealand, ameletite was considered by Marshall (1929) to be a chlorine-bearing sodium aluminium silicate, probably a feldspathoid, and later, a zeolite of unspecified composition. Optical, X-ray, and chemical data on several ‘ameletite’-bearing felsic volcanic rocks from the type area indicate that material previously designated as ameletite is variously nepheline and mixtures of sodalite, analcime, phillipsite, and nepheline. Criteria thought to be characteristic of ameletite are discussed.
