Summary
Emergency contraception (EC) is defined as any drug or device used after sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. The recommended options for oral EC are ulipristal acetate (UPA), a progesterone receptor modulator (30 mg), and the progestogen levonorgestrel (LNG) (1.5 mg or 3 mg dose depending on weight). Ulipristal acetate is licenced to be used within 120 hours of sexual intercourse and LNG within 72 hours. Mifepristone, a progesterone receptor modulator, is also used as an oral EC, but it is only available for this purpose in China, Vietnam, Russia, Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine. Although the copper intrauterine device is the most effective form of EC, oral EC remains the more commonly used approach [2].

Summary
Compassionate, non-judgemental abortion care should be provided to women seeking to end a pregnancy at the earliest gestation as possible and as late as necessary. Laws that prohibit abortion do not prevent abortion, but merely result in more unsafe abortions [1]. The legal requirements to access abortion vary significantly across Europe, and it is important for clinicians to be aware of their own country’s regulations but also those of their close neighbours, as it is common for women who live in areas of greater restriction to travel to nearby countries with less restrictive legislation.

Summary
Abortion is the most common gynaecological procedure worldwide and on average 56 million abortions are performed globally each year. One third of women will experience an induced abortion in their lifetime and most of them will have a single abortion [1]. When abortion is performed safely in a legal setting the complication rate is low and long-term morbidity and mortality are virtually non-existent [2] and 14 times lower than for childbirth [3]. However, less safe and least safe abortions are responsible for 31,000 maternal deaths and 7 million hospital admissions for complications globally each year [1].

Summary
Medical abortion is the use of medications, rather than surgical means to induce an abortion. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of a combination of mifepristone (a progesterone-receptor antagonist) followed by misoprostol (a synthetic prostaglandin) [1].

Summary
There is evidence that a significant proportion of pregnancies are unintended at conception. Pregnancy planning allows for optimization of a woman’s health prior to conception and is associated with improved outcomes for both mother and baby. Certain periods during the female life course are associated with an increased risk of unintended pregnancy, such as adolescence, or where the risk of pregnancy is under-recognized, such as post-pregnancy and the perimenopause. Interactions with obstetricians and gynaecologists may provide opportunities for prevention through education and enhanced contraceptive provision.

Summary
Unintended pregnancy is common. It is estimated that one in three pregnancies end in abortion. Management of unintended pregnancy, in the form of surgical and medical abortion, is an essential part of reproductive healthcare and fundamental for training in obstetrics and gynaecology. Comprehensive abortion care includes provision of accurate information on methods of abortion, provision of abortion and post-abortion care.
This chapter will provide background on the prevalence of abortion, pre-abortion assessment, methods of abortion, post-abortion contraception and management of abortion-related complications.

How well do we prepare our graduate students for the diverse careers they pursue in teaching, research, and outside of academia? This is the second time Graduate Education has been a track in the TLC, and this year we have also incorporated topics related to professional development. Despite the diversity of our presentations, we arrived at a unifying theme for our track: we must prepare graduate students for the multiple arenas they will enter into after graduation. We discussed at length how most of our graduate students seek something other than the traditional, research-oriented model of graduate education that we experienced. They seek a graduate experience that is civically engaged, prepares them for teaching in addition to research, and is perhaps more connected to disciplines outside of political science. Either we provide graduate students a framework of knowledge consistent with these demands or they will be left to develop these skills through trial and error alone. In support of this goal, we urge systemic change to our professional institutions that will value and reward a more holistic approach to graduate education and professional development. Elements of such change can be found in the variety of presentations contained in our track.
