Remnant radio galaxies discovered in a multi-frequency survey

The remnant phase of a radio galaxy begins when the jets launched from an active galactic nucleus are switched off. To study the fraction of radio galaxies in a remnant phase, we take advantage of a
$8.31$ deg
$^2$ subregion of the GAMA 23 field which comprises of surveys covering the frequency range 0.1–9 GHz. We present a sample of 104 radio galaxies compiled from observations conducted by the Murchison Widefield Array (216 MHz), the Australia Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (887 MHz), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (5.5 GHz). We adopt an ‘absent radio core’ criterion to identify 10 radio galaxies showing no evidence for an active nucleus. We classify these as new candidate remnant radio galaxies. Seven of these objects still display compact emitting regions within the lobes at 5.5 GHz; at this frequency the emission is short-lived, implying a recent jet switch off. On the other hand, only three show evidence of aged lobe plasma by the presence of an ultra-steep-spectrum (
$\alpha<-1.2$) and a diffuse, low surface brightness radio morphology. The predominant fraction of young remnants is consistent with a rapid fading during the remnant phase. Within our sample of radio galaxies, our observations constrain the remnant fraction to
$4\%\lesssim f_{\mathrm{rem}} \lesssim 10\%$; the lower limit comes from the limiting case in which all remnant candidates with hotspots are simply active radio galaxies with faint, undetected radio cores. Finally, we model the synchrotron spectrum arising from a hotspot to show they can persist for 5–10 Myr at 5.5 GHz after the jets switch of—radio emission arising from such hotspots can therefore be expected in an appreciable fraction of genuine remnants.

Introduction
We recently found that, in mice, independently of orosensory input, sucrose consumption is sufficient to condition the development of spout preferences and dopamine release in the ventral striatum.
ObjectivesTo clarify if the appetitive behavioral and dopaminergic responses to the postingestive effects of calorie-containing sugars reflect preabsorptive or postabsorptive events.
AimsTo understand if endovenous injection of glucose is sufficient to condition spout preferences and dopamine release.
MethodsMeasurements of the behavioural, metabolic and neurochemical effects of the administration of glucose solutions, enterically, and in the jugular (JV) or hepatic-portal (HPV) veins of rats.
ResultsHigh concentration glucose solutions administered in the JV were sufficient to condition spout preferences in a two-bottle behavioral task. Additionally, a low concentration glucose solution conditioned robust behavioral responses when administered in the HPV, but not the JV. Finally, using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry we found that, in accordance to behavioral findings, a low concentration glucose solution caused an increase of spontaneous dopamine release events in the nucleus accumbens shell when administered in the HPV, but not the JV.
ConclusionsThe postabsorptive effects of glucose are sufficient to mimic the behavioral and dopaminergic responses that result from sugar consumption. Furthermore, glycemia levels in the HPV contribute more significantly for this effect than systemic glycemia, arguing for the participation of an intra-abdominal visceral sensor for glucose.

We present low-frequency spectral energy distributions of 60 known radio pulsars observed with the Murchison Widefield Array telescope. We searched the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array survey images for 200-MHz continuum radio emission at the position of all pulsars in the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) pulsar catalogue. For the 60 confirmed detections, we have measured flux densities in 20 × 8 MHz bands between 72 and 231 MHz. We compare our results to existing measurements and show that the Murchison Widefield Array flux densities are in good agreement.

Summary
The anaesthetic team
Anaesthesia for ECT must be given by an experienced anaesthetist, capable of managing potential complications at a site that is usually isolated from theatres and often remote from the main hospital. Assistance is provided by a suitably trained operating department practitioner or anaesthetic nurse, and patients must be recovered by staff who have received appropriate theoretical and practical training (Royal College of Anaesthetists, 2009). Each department involved in ECT should allocate the responsibility for providing this service to a lead consultant anaesthetist (Cresswell et al, 2012) whose duties should include:
• ensuring suitable training, guidance and support is provided for those giving anaesthesia for ECT
• supervising and advising on the assessment of patients and their preparation for general anaesthesia
• ensuring the provision of suitable anaesthetic and monitoring equipment, appropriately trained anaesthetic assistants and recovery staff
• drawing up and reviewing of guidelines, regular audit against national standards, and reviewing of critical incidents
• liaising with other members of the ECT team, including regular multidisciplinary team meetings.
Equipment in the ECT suite (see also Chapter 2)
The main treatment area should be of adequate size, well lit and be equipped with tilting trolleys with cot sides that can be padded. This will be used for treatment and recovery until the patient can sit in a chair. Consideration should be given to equipment to facilitate the moving and handling of an unconscious patient. A secure drug storage cupboard, a small fridge and hand-washing facilities should be immediately available, and the room should have a clock with a second hand.
A full anaesthetic machine is not necessarily required but there must be a flow-controlled oxygen supply, either by pipeline or cylinder (plus reserve), with a Bain or Waters circuit to support ventilation. Airway circuits should be checked for function and patency prior to use. Suction of sufficient power must be available with Yankauer ends and soft suction catheters.
The recovery area should be immediately accessible from the treatment area and each first-stage recovery bay should be equipped with suitable lighting, an oxygen supply and suction.

We present the first results from a new carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the southern Galactic plane being conducted with the Mopra radio telescope in Australia. The 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J = 1–0 lines are being mapped over the
$l = 305^{\circ }\text{--} 345^{\circ }, b = \pm 0.5^{\circ }$ portion of the fourth quadrant of the Galaxy, at 35 arcsec spatial and 0.1 km s−1 spectral resolution. The survey is being undertaken with two principal science objectives: (i) to determine where and how molecular clouds are forming in the Galaxy and (ii) to probe the connection between molecular clouds and the ‘missing’ gas inferred from gamma-ray observations. We describe the motivation for the survey, the instrumentation and observing techniques being applied, and the data reduction and analysis methodology. In this paper, we present the data from the first degree surveyed,
$l = 323^{\circ } \text{--} 324^{\circ }, b = \pm 0.5^{\circ }$. We compare the data to the previous CO survey of this region and present metrics quantifying the performance being achieved; the rms sensitivity per 0.1 km s−1 velocity channel is ~1.5 K for
${\rm ^{12}CO}$ and ~0.7 K for the other lines. We also present some results from the region surveyed, including line fluxes, column densities, molecular masses,
${\rm ^{12}CO/^{13}CO}$ line ratios, and
${\rm ^{12}CO}$ optical depths. We also examine how these quantities vary as a function of distance from the Sun when averaged over the 1 square degree survey area. Approximately 2 × 106M⊙ of molecular gas is found along the G323 sightline, with an average H2 number density of
$n_{\text{H}_2} \sim 1$ cm−3 within the Solar circle. The CO data cubes will be made publicly available as they are published.

Summary
The anaesthetic team
Anaesthesia for ECT must be given by an experienced anaesthetist, capable of managing potential complications at a site that is usually isolated from theatres and often remote from the main hospital. Assistance is provided by a suitably trained operating department practitioner or anaesthetic nurse, and patients must be recovered by staff who have received appropriate theoretical and practical training (Royal College of Anaesthetists, 2009). Each department involved in ECT should allocate the responsibility for providing this service to a lead consultant anaesthetist (Cresswell et al, 2012) whose duties should include:
• ensuring suitable training, guidance and support is provided for those giving anaesthesia for ECT
• supervising and advising on the assessment of patients and their preparation for general anaesthesia
• ensuring the provision of suitable anaesthetic and monitoring equipment, appropriately trained anaesthetic assistants and recovery staff
• drawing up and reviewing of guidelines, regular audit against national standards, and reviewing of critical incidents
• liaising with other members of the ECT team, including regular multidisciplinary team meetings.
Equipment in the ECT suite (see also Chapter 2)
The main treatment area should be of adequate size, well lit and be equipped with tilting trolleys with cot sides that can be padded. This will be used for treatment and recovery until the patient can sit in a chair. Consideration should be given to equipment to facilitate the moving and handling of an unconscious patient. A secure drug storage cupboard, a small fridge and hand-washing facilities should be immediately available, and the room should have a clock with a second hand.
A full anaesthetic machine is not necessarily required but there must be a flow-controlled oxygen supply, either by pipeline or cylinder (plus reserve), with a Bain or Waters circuit to support ventilation. Airway circuits should be checked for function and patency prior to use. Suction of sufficient power must be available with Yankauer ends and soft suction catheters.
The recovery area should be immediately accessible from the treatment area and each first-stage recovery bay should be equipped with suitable lighting, an oxygen supply and suction.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae, and orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of 5 s and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source populations that we will be able to detect with VAST.

Behavioural factors associated with symptom outcomes in a primary care-based depression prevention intervention trial

Background. A randomized trial of a primary care-based intervention to prevent depression relapse resulted in improved adherence to long-term antidepressant medication and depression outcomes. We evaluated the effects of this intervention on behavioural processes and identified process predictors of improved depressive symptoms.
Method. Patients at high risk for depression recurrence or relapse following successful acute phase treatment (N=386) were randomly assigned to receive a low intensity 12-month intervention or continued usual care. The intervention combined education about depression, shared decision-making regarding use of maintenance pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioural strategies to promote self-management. Baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12-month interviews assessed patients' self-care practices, self-efficacy for managing depression and depressive symptoms.
Results. Intervention patients had significantly greater self-efficacy for managing depression (P<0·01) and were more likely to keep track of depressive symptoms (P<0·0001), monitor early warning signs (P<0·0001), and plan for coping with high risk situations (P<0·0001) at all time points compared to usual care control patients. Self-efficacy for managing depression (P<0·0001), keeping track of depressive symptoms (P=0·05), monitoring for early warning signs (P=0·01), engaging in pleasant activities (P<0·0001) and engaging in social activities (P<0·0001) positively predicted improvements in depression symptom scores.
Conclusions. A brief intervention designed to target cognitive-behavioural factors and promote adherence to pharmacotherapy in order to prevent depression relapse was highly successful in changing several behaviours related to controlling depression. Improvements in self-efficacy and several self-management behaviours that were targets of the intervention were significantly related to improvements in depression outcome.

Background. Few data are available regarding the impact of improved depression treatment on daily functioning and disability.
Methods. In two studies of more intensive depression treatment in primary care, patients initiating antidepressant treatment were randomly assigned to either usual care or to a collaborative management programme including patient education, on-site mental health treatment, adjustment of antidepressant medication, behavioural activation and monitoring of medication adherence. Assessments at baseline as well as 4 and 7 months included several measures of impairment, daily functioning and disability[ratio ]self-rated overall health, number of bodily pains, number of somatization symptoms, changes in work due to health, reduction in leisure activities due to health, number of disability days and number of restricted activity days.
Results. Average data from the 4- and 7-month assessments in both studies, intervention patients reported fewer somatic symptoms (OR 0·68, 95% CI 0·46, 0·99) and more favourable overall health (OR 0·50, 95% CI 0·28, 0·91). While intervention patients fared better on other measures of functional impairment and disability, none of these differences reached statistical significance.
Conclusions. More effective acute-phase depression treatment reduced somatic distress and improved self-rated overall health. The absence of a significant intervention effect on other disability measures may reflect the brief treatment and follow-up period and the influence of other individual and environmental factors on disability.
Electron Transport and Photoemission Studies of Amorphous CaAl Thin Films

Amorphous alloys of the binary system CaAl are known to have highly unusual electron transport properties with resistivities up to 450μΣcm and a Hall coefficient that deviates from free electron values at Ca concentrations higher than 45 atomic percent. For amorphous CaMg alloys, on the other hand, the resistivity is very much less and this great difference between the two sets of alloys is not fully understood.
We report on the correlation of photoemission and transport measurements made on two sets of amorphous CaAl and CaMg alloys prepared by magnetron sputtering in such a way that we could carry out both sets of measurements within the same UHV system. A special feature of the measurements was that the electrical resistivity was also measured in-situ using a specially designed 4-point probe to check for amorphicity and to compare with transport experiments carried out elsewhere.
Photoemission studies were carried out in the energy range 15–50 eV with tuneable synchrotron radiation enabling us to examine the Ca 3p-3d photoemission resonance in detail. The main result from the present series of experiments was that whereas in the CaAl alloys the Fermi edge developed a shoulder at high concentrations of Al, this feature was completely absent in CaMg. At the same time the intensity of the Ca 3p-3d photoemission resonance revealed the presence of d-states in both sets of alloys, indicating that the presence of these dstates cannot, by itself, explain the high resistivity of CaAl.
Chemical Migration by Contact Metamorphism between Pegmatite and Country Rocks: Natural Analogs for Radionuclide Migration

Comparison of trace element signatures of country rocks as a function of distance from the contact with two pegmatites, Tin Mountain and Etta, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, suggests that some elements such as K, Li, Rb, Cs, As, Sb, Zn and Pb, have migrated to distances of 4 to 40 meters during contact metamorphism. The relative degree of migration varies depending on the element. On the other hand, there is virtually no migration of rare earth elements (REE), Al, Sc, Cr, Hf, U, and Th. Biotite and muscovite are effective trace element traps for Li, Rb and Cs. Biotite has a greater affinity for Rb, Cs and Li than muscovite.
Superluminal Expansion of 3C 273

Figure 1 shows hybrid maps of the core of 3C 273B at five epochs, made with arrays of 4 or 5 VLBI antennas. The maps span a period of 3.5 years. They all show a bright eastern peak and a lower-brightness extension to the west. There is a local maximum in the western extension between 6 and 8 milliarcsec from the main peak. This “blob” moves steadily further away from the main peak along a roughly straight line in PA −116° ± 2°. Compare this with the position angle of the 25-arcsec optical jet, −137°. The maps show a slight curvature to the south with increasing separation from the main peak. Lower-resolution VLBI maps at lower frequencies show that this curvature continues at greater separations, suggesting a smooth connection between the milli-arcsecond position angle and the position angle of the optical jet. In our latest map (1981.09) the blob is no longer detectable with the limited dynamic range of the VLBI network (about 20:1).
