This paper addresses longstanding questions about how promise and obligation, two of the key conceptual building blocks for psychological contract research, are conceptualized and operationalized: How do employees understand these concepts? Would their understandings be congruent with the researchers’ and how would this knowledge inform future psychological contract research? Drawing on interviews with 61 Chinese workers from diverse backgrounds, our results suggest the concepts have distinct meanings for participants in terms of three criteria (defining characteristics, key features and manifestations in employment). We argue that promise and obligation are likely to serve different functions in employment relationship and have different meanings for researchers versus participants, and accordingly we highlight the challenges of using them to conceptualize and operationalize psychological contracts in China and beyond.

Tungsten is one the most important material for both plasma facing and structural applications in current designs for advanced divertors. Recent work has shown that composites can be manufactured from nanostructured tungsten foils which show significantly higher toughness than monolithic tungsten, but there is no data on the radiation resistance of such materials. In this study W-5 wt% Re foil in both an as rolled and annealed condition was implanted with 2MeV W+ ions to two damage levels, 0.07 and 0.4 dpa. The change in hardness was measured using nanoindentation. An increase in hardness was seen in both materials at both damage levels, with more hardening seen for the 0.4 dpa implanted samples. However the increase in hardness due to ion implantation was 2.6 times higher in the annealed material as compared to the as rolled material. This is due to the smaller grain size and higher dislocation density providing more sinks for the irradiation produced defects in the as rolled material as compared to the annealed material. Thus showing that unannealed tungsten foils are superior for use in applications in which they will see significant levels of radiation damage.

The fracture behaviour of individual grain boundaries has been studied in order to understand the mechanisms controlling stress corrosion cracking in nuclear reactors. In particular, the role of oxidation in facilitating crack initiation and propagation has been reviewed. Nickel alloys from pressurized water reactors (PWRs) have been tested in simulated primary water conditions to induce grain boundary oxidation. Microcantilevers containing an oxidized grain boundary plane have been prepared and tested for fracture. The brittle nature of the oxide was demonstrated and the required stress to fracture measured.

Model alloys have been made of pure W and 1% & 5% W-Ta and W-Re. Indentation hardness and modulus data were obtained by nanoindentation to assess the effect of composition on mechanical properties. Results showed that both the Ta and Re compositions hardened with increasing alloy content, greater in the W-5%Ta composition which showed an increase of 1.03GPa (17%), compared to a 0.43GPa (7%) increase in W-5%Re. The samples also showed very small increases in modulus of ∼ 25GPa (6%) in both W-5%Re and W-5%Ta. The samples were implanted with 3000appm concentration of helium. All samples show a substantial increase in hardness of up to 107% in the case of pure W. An appreciable difference in modulus is also seen in all samples. Initial TEM work has shown no visible He bubbles, suggesting that the mechanical properties changes are due to He-vacancy cluster formation below the resolvable limit.

Focused ion beam machining was used to manufacture microcantilevers 30 μm by 3 μm by 4 μm with a triangular cross section in single crystal copper at a range of orientations between. These were imaged and tested using AFM/nanoindentation. Each cantilever was indented multiple times at a decreasing distance away from the fixed end. Variation of the beam’s behavior with loading position allowed a critical aspect ratio (loaded length:beam width) of 6 to be identified above which simple beam approximations could be used to calculate Young’s modulus. Microcantilevers were also milled within a single grain in a polycrystalline copper sample and electron backscattered diffraction was used to identify the direction of the long axis of the cantilever. The experimentally measured values of Young’s modulus and their variation with orientation were found to be in good agreement with the values calculated from the literature data for bulk copper.

Micro-scale Focused Ion Beam (FIB) machined cantilevers were manufactured in single crystal copper, polycrystalline copper and a copper-bismuth alloy. These were imaged and tested in bending using a nanoindenter. Cantilevers machined inside a single grain of polycrystalline copper were tested to determine their (anisotropic) Young's modulus: results were in good agreement with values calculated from literature values for single crystal elastic constants. The size dependence of yield behavior in the Cu microcantilevers was also investigated. As the thickness of the specimen was reduced from 23μm to 1.7μm the yield stress increased from 300MPa to 900MPa. Microcantilevers in Cu-0.02%Bi were manufactured containing a single grain boundary of known character, with a FIB-machined sharp notch on the grain boundary. The cantilevers were loaded to fracture allowing the fracture toughness of grain boundaries of different misorientations to be determined.

Chemical bath deposition (CBD) is a commonly used method of depositing cadmium sulfide (CdS) films for photovoltaic application. The method is based on decomposition of a sulfur source in an alkaline solution of a cadmium source on the surface of the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) substrate. On the lab scale the CdS film is deposited by submerging a 1” square CIGS substrate in a heated beaker containing the chemical bath. This batch processing method is the one used for record-performing devices. There is an ongoing effort at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to scale-up the CBD process to deposit CdS films on 6” square substrate. Efforts are focused at designing both batch and flow reactors for depositing uniform, device quality CdS films on larger substrates. Batch reactor designs involve reproducing the deposition process in the beaker on a bigger scale with minimal chemical waste, while flow reactors are designed for continuous processing, such as encountered in roll-to-roll manufacturing lines.

Electrodeposited nickel-tungsten alloys are being considered as a candidate material for components for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabricated by the LIGA (German acronym for lithography, electrodeposition, and forming) technology. In spite of having a useful range of properties including; hardness and strength, better tribological and chemical resistance and improved high temperature resistance as compared with the conventionally used electrodeposited Ni, these alloys possess certain brittleness. In this study, the fracture toughness of Ni-17.5 at%W alloy microcantilever beams (dimension: 60µm × 20µm x 14µm) fabricated by UV lithography and electrodeposition and notched by focused ion beam machining is investigated. Load was applied to the beams using a nanoindenter, which also allowed accurate positioning of the sample. Fracture toughness was calculated from the fracture load assuming a linear elastic behaviour. The Ni-W alloy beams were found to possess a mean fracture toughness of 2.97 MPa √m. The fracture toughness of Ni-W alloy is found to be higher than that of Si - another important MEMS material, but considerably lower than that of electrodeposited nickel and nickel base alloys.

It is difficult to obtain p-type conductivity in beryllium-doped gallium nitride. Even when the material exhibits p-type conductivity, it tends to be highly compensated. Beryllium-doped gallium nitride samples grown by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated using deep level optical spectroscopy (DLOS), photoluminescence (PL), and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) in connection with an annealing study in an attempt to correlate compensation and PL features with microscopic defects.
Interestingly, both DAP PL and a DLOS indicate an energy level that if interpreted as an acceptor would yield an optical activation energy of beryllium in gallium nitride of about 100meV. These signatures are missing in all as-grown gallium-polar gallium nitride doped with beryllium at levels below 2×1014 cm-3. Upon annealing in pure nitrogen or forming gas, the samples clearly exhibit the DAP at 3.38 eV associated with a shallow Be acceptor, but the samples remain semi-insulating. Interestingly, all nitrogen-polar as-grown samples exhibit the DAP emission at 3.38eV. We will discuss more about the effect of annealing on the apparent optical activation of beryllium and the shift of the photoluminescence peak.
DLOS and PAS studies suggest that gallium vacancies and/or gallium-related vacancies are related to compensation in beryllium doped gallium nitride samples. For heavy beryllium doped gallium nitride, there is a correlation between PL at 2.3-2.4eV and a beryllium-related deep acceptor complex. This is supported by PAS studies and DLOS studies. Additionally, there is a correlation between donor-acceptor pair (DAP) at 3.38eV, beryllium concentration, and yellow-red photoluminescence at 2.0 or 2.2eV.
