Summary
On the death of Katherine Mansfield
Last night I dreamed I did a valley seek And heard a cuckoo in blood-red lilies cry;
Last night I dreamed I climbed an Alpine peak And saw a teardrop falling from the sky.
A graveyard tombstone on Rome’s western bound Marks Shelley’s death a hundred years ago;
A hundred years on, Hell’s grim wheels resound Over the green forest of Fontainebleau.
They say the world is a ruthless instrument, Yet our ideals, like beacons, guide our tread;
If beauty, truth, virtue are fortune’s friend Why do five rainbows not gleam overhead?
Was it just once or for infinity, Those twenty immortal minutes spent with you?
Who can believe that your divinity Has faded from the earth like morning dew?
No! Life is but material delusion; The beauteous soul rests in the love of God;
A thirty-year sojourn, a mere illusion; I weep, but see you smile in heaven’s abode.
In London, Mansfield, we’d a summer date To meet on Lake Geneva, as you recall,
Where Mont Blanc’s snows refract upon the lake; Now stare I at the clouds and sad tears fall.
When I was young, my life embraced new things; I sensed as in a dream the worth of love;
Mature love comes from life’s awakenings; Now to death’s brink my love and life I move.
True love is crystal that will never shatter; Love is the road to completeness of being:
Death is a cauldron of material matter, The gods’ condensed conflux of everything.
Would my thoughts flew like electricity And I could touch your distant soul in heaven!
I shed my tears on the wind: ‘When, when,’ I cry, ‘Can the dread gate ’twixt life and death be riven?’

Horace (65–8 BC), the great lyric poet of the Augustan Age in Rome, composed over a hundred Odes. Scholarly understanding of their early medieval reception has been hampered by the insistence of classical philologists that he was a purely literary poet. Ancient sources and Horace’s own writings demonstrate that he was a performing artist who sang to the accompaniment of his lyre. His use of Alcaic, Sapphic and Asclepiad metres has musical implications. In manuscripts from the ninth to the twelfth centuries, forty-eight passages from the Odes are accompanied by musical notation. The Montpellier codex has notation for the Ode to Phyllis (Odes 4.11) which relates to Guido d’Arezzo’s ‘ut-re-mi’ mnemonic. The St Petersburg codex has settings which suggest various uses, in the schoolroom, abbey entertainments and goliardic performance. The surviving manuscripts were widely spread across Europe and supported a monastic and secular tradition of Horatian song.

Objectives
Bedside ultrasound in the emergency department is a common diagnostic tool, especially when evaluating trauma patients. Many trauma patients have blood on their chest and abdomen that may contact the probe during examination. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether occult blood contamination was present on the emergency department ultrasound machine, both after daily use and after use in trauma.
MethodsFor a period of 31 days, the ultrasound machine at the trauma centre emergency department in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was tested once daily and following all Level 1 traumas. The ultrasound machine probes and keyboard were swabbed, and contamination was detected using a commercially available phenolphthalein blood testing kit. Any visible blood contamination was also noted. The machine was then cleaned following each positive test and re-tested to ensure the absence of contamination.
ResultsOver the study period, the ultrasound machine tested positive for occult blood contamination on 10% of daily tests and on 43% of assessments after its use in trauma. The curvilinear probe was most frequently contaminated (daily, 6%; trauma, 26%), followed by the keyboard (daily, 3%; trauma, 26%), but both lacked visible contamination.
ConclusionsIn this single centre study, there was evidence of occult blood on the emergency department ultrasound machine after both routine use and major trauma cases, highlighting the need for a standardized cleaning and disinfection protocol.
