The Aleutian subduction zone is capable of generating magnitude ~9 earthquakes that have local impact and broadcast their destructive power across the Pacific through tsunamis. Field surveys of the tsunami from the 1957 Great Aleutian earthquake (reported Mw 8.6) indicate a tsunami amongst the largest of the twentieth century. In the eastern half of the rupture zone, stranded logs record up to 18 m run-up in the Islands of Four Mountains (IFM) and 32±2 m on Unalaska Island. In conjunction with archaeological studies in the region, these observations show the potential impact of tsunamis on the ancient peoples in the IFM. Simulation of the near-field tsunami produced from the published slip distribution of 1957 is almost an order of magnitude smaller than all field observations. Increasing the earthquake magnitude and amount of eastern slip used in forward models of the tsunami demonstrate that run-up observations can be achieved throughout the eastern Aleutians if the earthquake was more than twice as large—at least Mw 8.8 earthquake with 10–20 m of eastern slip. Additionally, up to five possible IFM paleotsunami deposits agree with the regional picture of regular large events, illustrating the circum-Pacific tsunami hazard from the east-central Aleutians.

Even though Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica Linnaeus, Rubiaceae) can self-pollinate, bees are important pollinators, without which there is lower fruit quality and yield. We studied bee diversity in coffee agroecosystems in Costa Rica during two coffee flowering seasons (2005 and 2006). Malaise traps were used as a passive sampling method to collect bees during coffee blooms. We collected 1012 bee individuals from three different site types: nonagricultural fields and shaded and unshaded coffee farms. Unshaded coffee farms had significantly higher species richness (S) and number of bee individuals (n) than did the shaded coffee farms and nonagricultural sites. Overall bee diversity did not differ among site types but evenness (J′) was significantly lower in unshaded coffee farms. Using a more detailed community analysis, there was a significant association between functional groups and habitat type with more species and individuals of small-bodied ground-nesting bees (Lasioglossum (Dialictus) Robertson) associated with unshaded coffee farms. A large proportion (49%) of bees collected were of this subgenus, which was never before reported as common in coffee agroecosystems. Further studies should establish whether Dialictus is important in coffee pollination. We propose strategies involving conservation of native bees through simple habitat management for small-scale coffee farms that may improve crop quality and quantity.

A total of 276 crossbred pigs were used in three trials to determine if feeding spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) in simple phase 1 piglet diets with differing soya-bean meal (SBM) levels can influence performance or immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels specific to the antigenic soya proteins, glycinin and β-conglycinin. Pigs were blocked according to initial body weight and equalized across treatments according to gender and ancestry. Blocks of pigs were then randomly assigned to one of three treatments in a completely randomized block design. The dietary treatments were as follows: (1) 10% +: 100 g/kg SBM with 75 g/kg SDAP; (2) 20% +: 200 g/kg SBM with 75 g/ kg SDAP; (3) 20%-: 200 g/kg SBM without SDAP. Pigs were given treatment diets for 14 days, followed by a common diet for the duration of the trials (35 days). Average daily gain (ADG) and gain to food (G: F) ratios were not affected by dietary treatments. Average daily food intake (ADFI), however, was greater for pigs given 10% + as compared with 20% + and 20%- (P < 0.05) during days 0 to 14 post weaning. Addition of SDAP increased ADFI (P < 0.01) and tended to increase ADFI when added to diets containing 200 g/kg of soya-bean meal (P = 0.06). No differences were detected in soya-specific IgG levels during any collection period. These data suggest that SDAP addition to simple phase 1 piglet diets increased ADFI during the first 2 weeks, but did not alter ADG or food efficiency. There was no indication that SDAP addition altered IgG titres against the soya-bean proteins, glycinin and β-conglycinin.

Small signal dielectric response is reported for a variety of PZT thin film samples. Small and large signal responses, recorded simultaneously during the fatiguing of PZT thin films, are used to identify distinct fatigue mechanisms. Microcracking or electrode delamination less than 100 Å is sufficient to explain the high correlation between the dielectric permittivity and remanent polarization during fatigue.
