The natural modes of oscillation of an infinitely long, ice covered channel are considered, using the hydrostatic approximation, and assuming the ice to behave elastically. The dispersion relation, mode shape, and associated force on the channel wall are found for the lowest three modes. Special attention is paid to the limitations associated with the hydrostatic and elastic approximations.

Summary
Introduction
Throughout this book creative citizenship is explored theoretically and empirically as a concept that intrinsically leads to value generation. Acts of creative citizenship bring personal, cultural, economic, social and civic benefits, not only to individuals and communities directly involved in these acts, but also to the wider public. So, hyperlocal blogs may generate income for amateur journalists but also benefit local residents and businesses through communicating and raising awareness about issues that affect them, ranging from the weather and local services to political and planning issues (Nesta, 2013). Similarly, the benefits of community-led design enhance social value through civic participation, more democratic outcomes, creation of public goods, improved social capital and stronger community. In boosting qualities such as self-expression, confidence and skills, they also generate personal value. (Alexiou et al, 2013).
The Creative Citizen project is concerned not only with understanding and capturing current practice and its value, as enacted through the use of different media, but also exploring how this pursuit of value can be further supported and advanced.
One of the instruments we used to explore questions of value was asset mapping. In community engagement and community development theory and practice, the term ‘asset’ has long been used as an alternative for the term ‘value’. Assets are tangible or intangible resources that have a potential – they can grow or be better used to achieve something new. Drawing from the strengths of different existing approaches, asset mapping was innovatively used in the Creative Citizen project both as an analytic research tool for capturing people's values and perceptions of value, and as a practical tool to support community engagement and co-creation.
The chapter reviews different asset mapping or asset-based development approaches and presents the approach developed and used in the Creative Citizen project, discussing theoretical and methodological insights. The chapter links to Chapter 4, which is focused on appraising and articulating the value of creative citizenship through the lens of cultural value.
Approaches to asset mapping
Asset mapping is a methodology used with community groups and organisations to help unearth, capture and visualise existing resources and capacities, which may otherwise lie undiscovered and underused.

Using a sand-tank model and the salt-sugar system, double-diffusive fingers formed in a saturated porous medium. In contrast to the quasi-steady fingering typically observed in a viscous fluid, the fingering here was quite unsteady. The fingers’ structure was observed, and measurements of the sugar flux indicate that double-diffusive groundwater fingers can transport solutes at rates as much as two orders of magnitude larger than those associated with molecular diffusion in motionless groundwater. The buoyancy-flux ratio, r = αFT/βFS, increased from r = 0.65 ± 0.02 (at Rρ = 1.02) to r = 0.81 ± 0.06 (at Rρ = 1.50), where Rρ is the density-anomaly ratio. (Using the salt-sugar system in a viscous fluid, r was previously shown to decrease with increasing Rρ.) The buoyancy flux due to sugar varied approximately as R−5.6ρ, which is almost identical with the variation found for salt-sugar fingers in a viscous fluid. The model of Green (1984) was applied to the experiments and predicted buoyancy-flux ratios and finger widths that were in fairly good agreement with the measured values, although the predicted buoyancy fluxes due to sugar were significantly larger than the measured fluxes.

A convective instability is produced by salt water diffusing onto the surface of a fresh-water layer in a Hele Shaw cell. Although the horizontal wavelength of the initial instability is small, an increase in the horizontal wavelength of the convective flow with time and depth is observed as the resulting two-dimensional convection develops. The phenomenon of wavelength variation is confirmed numerically, but quantitative observational and theoretical comparison is limited to small Rayleigh numbers. It is shown that perturbations in the density field cause horizontal pressure gradients, which in turn cause convective elements to combine.

Long waves are generated in a laboratory-size rectangular basin, which is heated uniformly from below. Their subsequent decay is measured, and the decay component due to the action of convective turbulence isolated, using a combination of existing theories and interpretation techniques. An expression is proposed for the turbulent decay decrement as a function of the bulk Rayleigh number. The results agree as well as can be expected with a simple model based on a Reynolds-stress decay estimate obtained by superposing convective thermals on the oscillating flow associated with the long wave.
