Passive microwave-brightness temperatures over the Greenland ice sheet are examined during the melt season in order to develop a technique for determining surface-melt occurrences. Time series of Special Sensor Microwave/ Imager (SSM/I) data are examined for three locations on the ice sheet, two of which are known to experience melt. These two sites demonstrate a rapid increase in brightness temperatures in late spring to early summer, a prolonged period of elevated brightness temperatures during the summer, and a rapid decrease in brightness temperatures during late summer. This increase in brightness temperatures is associated with surface snow melting. An objective technique is developed to extract melt occurrences from the brightness-temperature time series. Of the two sites with summer melt, the site at the lower elevation had a longer period between the initial and final melt days and had more total days classified as melt during 1988 and 1989. The technique is then applied to the entire Greenland ice sheet for the first major surface-melt event of 1989. The melt-zone signal is mapped from late May to early June to demonstrate the advance and subsequent retreat of one “melt wave”. The use of such a technique to determine melt duration and extent for multiple years may provide an indication of climate change.

During the summer of 1993, a field program was conducted to collect several shallow firn cores from two locations in the southern region of the Greenland ice sheet. Stratigraphic evidence of melt from these cores was used for comparison with satellite-derived indications of melt.
The shallow firn cores were examined for stratigraphic evidence of past melt events and were sampled for oxygen-isotope analysis to delineate the annual accumulation layers in the snowpack. The relative intensity of each year’s summer melt episode was compared to the corresponding melt frequency derived from microwave emissions. This comparison demonstrates that a linkage between the stratigraphic record and microwave data can be established. Both data sets indicate that there was less melt during the late 1970s and early 1980s than during the late 1980s, in general agreement with climate observations.

Radiation damage effects in ceramics, e.g., nuclear waste forms, transmutation targets, and inert matrix fuels, may have important implications for the physical and chemical stability of these materials as the cumulative radiation dose increases over time. A key aspect of scientific research in this area is the ability to understand the fundamental damage mechanisms through the combination of experimental and atomistic modelling techniques. In this paper, we review some of the lessons learned from the significant body of data now available for pyrochlore-defect fluorite based materials, followed by an illustration of the advantages of working on simple compounds with well established interatomic potentials. We conclude the paper with a description of radiation damage processes in the LaxSr1-1.5xTiO3 defect perovskites, a system that includes phase transformations, short-range order effects, and complex defect behavior.

Background
Paediatric cardiac services are poorly developed or totally absent in underdeveloped countries. Institutions, foundations and interested individuals in those nations in which sophisticated paediatric cardiac surgery is practised have the ability to alleviate this problem by sponsoring paediatric cardio-surgical missions to provide care, and train local caregivers in developing, transitional, and third world countries. The ultimate benefit of such a programme is to improve the surgical abilities of the host institution. The purpose of this report is to present the impact of our programme over a period of 14 years.
MethodsWe specifically reviewed our database of patients from our missions, our team lists, surgical results, and the number and type of personnel trained in the institutions that we have assisted. In order for the institution to be entered into the study, the foundation had to provide at least 2 months of training. In addition, the institution had to respond to a simple questionnaire concerning the number and types of surgery performed at their facility before and after intervention by the foundation.
ResultsWe made 140 trips to 27 institutions in 19 countries, with 12 of the visited institutions qualifying for inclusion. Of these, 9 institutions reported an increase in the number and complexity of cases currently being performed in their facility since the team intervened. This goal had not been accomplished in 3 institutions. The reasons for failure included the economic situation of the country, hospital and national politics, personality conflicts, and continued lack of hardware and disposables.
ConclusionsPaediatric cardiac service assistance can improve local services. A significant commitment is required by all parties involved.

Thin crystals of rutile, brookite, and anatase were irradiated in-situ with 1.0 MeV Kr using the IVEM-TANDEM facility. Synthetic rutile and cassisterite (SnO2, rutile structure) remained crystalline up to 5 × 1015 ion cm-2 at 50 K. Natural brookite and anatase with low impurity levels became amorphous at 8.1 ± 1.8 × 1014 and 2.3 ± 0.2 × 1014 ions cm-2, respectively, at 50 K. Irradiation at higher temperature revealed Tc = 170 K for brookite and 242 K for anatase. Natural rutile with about 2 wt% impurities became amorphous at 9.4 ± 1.8 × 1014 ions cm-2 at 50 K and has a Tc = 207 K. The available data reveal both a structural effect in the polymorphs with low levels of chemical impurities and a chemical effect in natural rutile specimens containing up to about 1.7 wt% impurities.

Background: Paediatric cardiovascular services are frequently absent or poorly developed in many countries around the world. Our foundation made 83 trips in support of cardiovascular services between April 1993 and March 2003 to help alleviate this problem. In this study, we present an analysis of our results over these period of 10 years. Methods: We performed a review of all available records relating to the trips, including patient databases, audited financial statements, donated product inventory lists, lists of team members, and follow-up data from the host sites concerning the state of the patients treated. Results: We made 83 trips to 14 countries, 40 of these being in Central Europe, 5 in Eastern Europe, 10 in Caribbean, and Central America, 18 in South America, 9 in Asia, and 1 in the Middle East. In the first 5 years, we made 23, as opposed to 60 in the second 5 years, this difference being significant (p less than 0.01). The total number of primary operations performed over 10 years was 1,580. The number of procedures performed yearly increased over the two intervals from 97.0 plus or minus 32.7 to 219.0 plus or minus 41.7, p less than 0.002. The probability of survival between the periods increased from 84.6 to 93.3 per cent, and this was also significantly different (p less than 0.001). Overall, the rate of survival for the period of 10 years was 90.5 per cent. Moreover, the value of services donated to support each trip also differed significantly, decreasing from 105,900 dollars plus or minus 14,581 dollars for the first period to 54,617 dollars plus or minus 11,425 dollars for the second period (p less than 0.001). Conclusions: Improving paediatric cardiac services in under-served countries requires significant financial and personnel commitments, but can produce reasonable outcomes.
