The free corrosion behavior and the anodic passivation ability of the bulk glassy (Fe44.3Cr5Co5Mo12.8Mn11.2C15.8B5.9)98.5Y1.5 alloy were fundamentally analyzed. Electrochemical tests were performed in aqueous solutions with pH values in the interval 0.3–14. Corrosion current densities are below 3 μA/cm2 in the entire studied pH interval; compared with commercial grade steels, for example, X210Cr12 steel, the glassy alloy has lower corrosion rates in acidic electrolytes and higher in basic solutions. The alloy exhibits high dissolution rates upon anodic polarization in acidic environments, but with increasing pH values it tends to form passive layers showing the lowest passive current density at pH 11. The passive layers consist mainly of Fe and Cr oxides. There is a strong variation of the passive layer structure and composition with pH. The protective effect of the grown surface layers is negatively influenced by sulfate ions.

Amorphous Zr-(Ti)-(Nb)-Al-Cu-Ni alloy samples were prepared by melt-spinning and copper mould casting in an argon atmosphere and characterized regarding their microstructure and thermal behavior. Their anodization behavior in aqueous environments with pH= 0.5 – 13 was studied by electrochemical polarization techniques in combination with surface analytical investigations, i.e. SEM/EDX, AES. In chloride-containing solutions the macroscopic corrosion resistance of bulk amorphous alloys is affected by the presence of heterogeneities, such as concentrated cluster zones of selected components or crystalline defects. Pitting phenomena are studied in neutral and acidic chloride solutions and as a result a local corrosion mechanism is proposed. The cathodic reactivity of alloy samples at different microstructural states and after pre-etching in fluoride solutions was investigated. After pre-etching melt-spun amorphous samples exhibit a significant increase in surface reactivity as expressed by a drastic increase in electrochemical capacities and in cathodic current densities as well as by a significant reduction of overpotentials for the hydrogen reduction reaction. The hydrogen sorption behavior was studied on samples galvanostatically charged at various cathodic current densities by means of XRD, DSC, TEM and thermal desorption analysis TDA. At room temperature Zr-based alloys absorb hydrogen up to H/M=1.65 mainly by interstitial solution of hydrogen atoms in the amorphous structure. The effect of absorbed hydrogen on the thermal stability and the crystallization behavior is described.

A collection of 64 accessions of the South American pasture legume Aeschynomene histrix Poiret was characterized in 1995 at Ibadan in south-west Nigeria in order to test the potential of the accessions as forage plants in subhumid areas and as a trap crop for the parasitic plant Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. All accessions had a low biomass production during the first 8 weeks after sowing but soon variations in the collection became apparent. Morphologically, accessions could be classified as having prostrate, decumbent, semi-erect and erect growth habit. The semi-erect to erect accessions grew vigorously and had high dry matter yields. The most frequent disease was Rhizoctonia foliar blight, for which, in general, prostrate accessions had a higher severity. In contrast, plants with semi- erect to erect growth habit were more susceptible to a wilting disease probably caused by Fusarium spp. With an average crude protein content of 16% and 48-h in sacco dry matter and protein digestibilities of c. 50%, fodder quality of 13-week-old plants was similar to that of other tropical forage legumes. As a result of a laboratory experiment to test the potential of A. histrix to act as a trap crop for Striga hermonthica, 13 accessions showing a significant influence on in vitro Striga hermonthica seed germination were identified. Twenty promising accessions were selected for further evaluation. These accessions showed good biomass production and/or high tolerance to diseases and/or significant influence on Striga hermonthica seed germination. Such material has the potential to contribute to both livestock-forage and improved fallow systems with the aim of increasing the sustainability of agricultural production in West Africa.

The phase formation of a Zr57Ti8Nb2.5Cu13.9Ni11.1Al7.5alloy has been investigated upon cooling from the melt at different quenching rates as well as upon annealing of as-cast specimens. The different samples are characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Rapid quenching using the melt spinning technique results in amorphization. Slower cooling as realized upon copper mold casting leads to an icosaheadral quasicrystalline phase coexisting with a small amount of amorphous phase. The primarily formed quasicrystals have a grain size of about 1 νm. Upon annealing, the amorphous phase formed upon melt spinning precipitates quasicrystals in the first step of a series of transformations to the crystalline equilibrium compounds. The quasicrystals formed by annealing do not exceed a size of 5 to 10 nm.

The syntheses and physical properties of K-(ET)2CU[N(CN)2]X (X = Br and Cl) are summarized. The K-(ET)2Cu [N(CN)2] Br salt is the highest Tc radical-cation based ambient pressure organic superconductor (Tc = 11.6 K), and the K-(ET)2CU [N(CN)2] C1 salt becomes a superconductor at even higher Tc under 0.3 kbar hydrostatic pressure (Tc = 12.8 K). The similarities and differences between K-(ET)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br and K-(ET)2CU(NCS)2 (TC = 10.4 K) are presented. The X-ray structures at 127 K reveal that the S-S contacts shorten between ET dimers in the former compound while the S-S contacts shorten within dimers in the latter. The differences in their ESR linewidth behavior is also explained in terms of the structural differences. A semiconducting compound, (ET)Cu[N(CN)2]2, isolated during K-(ET)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl synthesis is also reported. The ESR measurements of the K-(ET)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl salt indicate that the phase transition near 40 K is similar to the spin density wave transition in (TMTSF)2SbF6. A new class of organic superconductors, K-(ET)2CU2(CN)3 and K-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3.δBrδ, is reported with Tc's of 2.8 K (1.5 kbar) and 2.6 K (1 kbar), respectively.
