On the basis of studies of the last fifty years, the term ‘Mediterranean’ has come to acquire an ethnographic, linguistic, and religious value, besides its purely physical and geographic meaning. If anthropology today speaks of a ‘Mediterranean race’—located between the extreme west of Europe and the peninsula of Malacca—archeology speaks of a ‘Mediterranean civilisation’. Of this civilisation, perhaps even the Indian revelations of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa do not mark the ultimate limit. It derived from a particularly evolved Neolithic, reached its apogee on the island of Crete in the Bronze Age, and spread from there all through the basin of the Mediterranean, continental Greece and Asia Minor (where alternate contacts and conflicts, not necessary to specify here, had characterised for millennia the relations between peoples of various races). This civilisation was succeeded by a more composite one, called the Mycean, with the Achaeans as its fulcrum, a people who had already proved their maritime and warlike skill in Anatolia, between the shores of the Black Sea and the Sporades. Linguistics, in turn, speaks of a ‘Mediterranean idiom’.

The growing use of additive manufacturing (AM) processes pushes research towards studying methods to reduce their environmental impact. The part build orientation is a significant process variable, which can be chosen through the Energy Performance Assessment (EPA), a straightforward method. The paper presents a method for identifying the best part build orientation considering energy consumption. The EPA has been adapted for this purpose, resulting in an approach based on four steps. The method was employed to determine the best printing direction for three parts and two AM technologies.

Additive Manufacturing has transformed modern manufacturing with its well-known advantages. However, shrinkage remains a critical challenge, causing dimensional inaccuracies that should be properly compensated to assure geometric fidelity. This study aims to assess the reliability of a Reverse Engineering (RE) technique for dimensional compensation. A gauge-based measurement approach has been used to validate the RE method. Results confirm that the RE method is promising, while highlighting the intrinsic errors of the RE technique, and suggesting ways to evaluate and prevent them.

This article suggests a new interpretative framework for Article 27(2) of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits sexual violence against women in armed conflict. One specific aspect of this norm is particularly controversial: the notion of ‘honour’ has often been criticised as an obsolete concept linked to an outdated view of female morality. In the absence of a definition of the term, this article examines whether the gendered limitations of the norm can be overcome and the extent to which an evolutive interpretation of the concept is feasible. It argues that the concept of ‘honour’ can be treated as a generic term that is subject to evolutive interpretation, allowing for a renewed and gender-sensitive understanding to be developed, aligned with the concept of human dignity.

Digitalization is one of the fundamental pillars of Industry 4.0. Within smart factories, Big Data Analytics systems play a key role in supporting the decision-making process of various stages of business processes. In this context, this research aims to identify solutions able to process large volumes of data from digital business processes with the final goal of adding value to the organisation. More specifically, the research deals with the implementation of a digital manufacturing tool able to digitize the workforce management process. The research has been applied in the case study of an Italian manufacturing company operating in the leather goods sector through the digitalization of the workforce management by a cloud-based platform. The implementation of the tool increases the efficiency of the production process, provides efficient management and integrates workforce data into one system. The implemented tool generates a large volume of data, the final goal is to make data user-friendly to support business decisions. Digitisation provides an exchange of information to support managers to make confident decisions.

We consider entropy solutions to the eikonal equation $|\nabla u|=1$ in two-space dimensions. These solutions are motivated by a class of variational problems and fail in general to have bounded variation. Nevertheless, they share several of their fine properties with BV functions: we show in particular that the set of non-Lebesgue points has at least one co-dimension.

We present new theoretical period–luminosity (PL) and period–radius (PR) relations at multiple wavelengths (Johnson–Cousins–Glass and Gaia passbands) for a fine grid of BL Herculis models computed using mesa-rsp. The non-linear models were computed for periods typical of BL Her stars, i.e. 1 ≤ P(days) ≤ 4, covering a wide range of input parameters: metallicity (−2.0 dex ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0.0 dex), stellar mass (0.5–0.8 ), luminosity (50–300 ) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). We investigate the impact of four sets of convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Most empirical relations match well with theoretical relations from the BL Her models computed using the four sets of convection parameters. No significant metallicity effects are seen in the PR relations. Another important result from our grid of BL Her models is that it supports combining PL relations of RR Lyrae and Type II Cepheids together as an alternative to classical Cepheids for the extragalactic distance scale calibration.

We employed data from the VISTA near-infrared YJKS survey of the Magellanic System to analyse the light curves of Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). Using the T2Cs identified by the OGLE IV survey and Gaia mission, we built up a sample of about 330 pulsators belonging to both galaxies. For all these objects we obtained accurate intensity-averaged magnitudes in the YJKS bands by means of a template-fitting technique. We complemented our near-infrared data with optical photometry from the literature to calculate period-luminosity and period-Wesenheit relations for a variety of different bands and colour combinations and separately for the different T2C subclasses (BL Herculis, W Virginis, peculiar W Virginis, RV Tauri). These relations, calibrated with the LMC distance modulus, were tested using T2Cs belonging to Galactic globular clusters. We thus calculated the distances of 22 clusters and compared them with the literature values, mainly based on RR Lyrae stars, finding good agreement within 1 σ and dispersion of the order of 0.3 – 0.5 kpc, depending on the adopted period-luminosity/period-Wesenheit relation.

In the context of a project aimed to provide an updated theoretical scenario for various classes of radially pulsating stars, we present the first results obtained for anomalous Cepheids. By adopting reliable and updated evolutionary prescriptions concerning the luminosity levels for various core He-burning stellar models with masses suitable for entering the instability strip, we have computed nonlinear convective pulsation models for both fundamental and first-overtone mode anomalous Cepheids by exploring the impact of varying the metal abundance as well as the efficiency of super-adiabatic convection. These numerical simulations have allowed us to retrieve the boundaries of the instability strip and all relevant pulsation properties, namely period, amplitude, bolometric light and radial velocity curves. This theoretical scenario has been transformed into the Gaia photometric system to derive the first theoretical Period–Luminosity–Colour and Period–Wesenheit relations in the Gaia bands.

Pulsating stars play a crucial role in the calibration of the cosmic distance scale as well as in tracing the properties of the associated stellar populations. In the era of large observational surveys and precise astrometric missions, it is crucial to rely on accurate stellar pulsation models able to predict the observed behaviors for different physical assumptions. Indeed, the relations currently used in the literature to derive individual and mean distances of mainly radially pulsating stars such as Cepheids and RR Lyrae are well physically understood, but are also known to depend on a number of often unknown parameters. Recent extensive sets of stellar pulsation models developed by various authors show how variations in the physical assumptions can affect the theoretical prediction of the instability strip boundaries, the morphology and amplitude of light and radial velocity curves, and the consequent Period-Luminosity, Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Wesenheit relations. These aspects are discussed in the framework of current open problems in the field of classical pulsating stars.

Face masks are currently considered essential devices that people must wear today and in the near future, until the COVID-19 pandemic will be completely defeated through specific medicines and vaccines. Such devices are generally made of thermoplastic polymers, as polypropylene and polyethylene and are single use products. Even if in this period the sanitary emergency must have the maximum priority, the world society should not completely forget the environmental problem that are causing more and more obvious climate changes with correlated damages to ecosystems and human health. Despite the well-known correlation among anti-COVID protective equipment (or more generally medical devices) and environmental issues, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and eco-design-based studies in this field is very scarce. The present study aims to derive the most important environmental criticalities of such products, by using LCA and product circularity indicators of five different common masks. The final aim is to provide eco-design guidelines, useful to design new face masks by preventing negative impact on the environment.
