We address the issue of decreasing band-gap with increasing atomic number, inherent in semiconducting materials, by introducing a concept we call dimensional reduction. The concept leads to semiconductor compounds containing high atomic number elements and simultaneously exhibiting a large band gap and high mass density suggesting that dimensional reduction can be successfully employed in developing new γ-ray detecting materials. As an example we discuss the compound Cs2Hg6S7 that exhibits a band-gap of 1.65eV and mobility-lifetime products comparable to those of optimized Cd0.9Zn0.1Te.

The relative role of thermal expansion and redistribution of alloy components in the temperature dependence of the lattice misfit in γ/γ' alloys is investigated on the basis of ab initio calculations. We show that in a wide temperature region up to approximately 0.6·Tmelt, the lattice misfit is determined by the difference in thermal expansion of γ and γ' phases and shows only a slight variation. For higher temperatures the redistribution of the major alloy components between the phases becomes a leading contribution to the lattice misfit.

We present results of comparative studies of the dislocation properties and the mechanical behavior for a class of intermetallic alloys based on platinum group metals (PGM) which are being developed for ultra-high temperature applications: Ir3X and Rh3X (where X = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta). For the analysis of dislocation structure and mobility, we employ a combined approach based on accurate first-principles calculations of the shear energetics and the modified semi-discrete 2D Peierls-Nabarro model with an ab-initio parametrization of the restoring forces. Based on our analysis of dislocation structure and mobility, we provide predictions of temperature yield stress behavior of PGM-based intermetallics, show that their dislocation properties are closely connected with features of the electronic structure and the L12 → D019 structural stability, and demonstrate the dramatic difference in dislocation structure and the mechanical behavior between PGM alloys with IVA and VA group elements.

Advances in all-electron local density functional theory approaches to complex materials structure and properties made possible by the implementation of new computational/theoretical algorithms on supercomputers are exemplified in our full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. In this total energy self-consistent approach, high numerical stability and precision (to 10 in the total energy) have been demonstrated in a study of the relaxation and reconstruction of transition metal surfaces. Here we demonstrate the predictive power of this method for describing the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of several systems (surfaces, overlayers, sandwiches, and superlattices).
