On several key issues we agree with the commentators. Perhaps most importantly, everyone seems to agree that psychology has an important role to play in building better models of human vision, and (most) everyone agrees (including us) that deep neural networks (DNNs) will play an important role in modelling human vision going forward. But there are also disagreements about what models are for, how DNN–human correspondences should be evaluated, the value of alternative modelling approaches, and impact of marketing hype in the literature. In our view, these latter issues are contributing to many unjustified claims regarding DNN–human correspondences in vision and other domains of cognition. We explore all these issues in this response.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have had extraordinary successes in classifying photographic images of objects and are often described as the best models of biological vision. This conclusion is largely based on three sets of findings: (1) DNNs are more accurate than any other model in classifying images taken from various datasets, (2) DNNs do the best job in predicting the pattern of human errors in classifying objects taken from various behavioral datasets, and (3) DNNs do the best job in predicting brain signals in response to images taken from various brain datasets (e.g., single cell responses or fMRI data). However, these behavioral and brain datasets do not test hypotheses regarding what features are contributing to good predictions and we show that the predictions may be mediated by DNNs that share little overlap with biological vision. More problematically, we show that DNNs account for almost no results from psychological research. This contradicts the common claim that DNNs are good, let alone the best, models of human object recognition. We argue that theorists interested in developing biologically plausible models of human vision need to direct their attention to explaining psychological findings. More generally, theorists need to build models that explain the results of experiments that manipulate independent variables designed to test hypotheses rather than compete on making the best predictions. We conclude by briefly summarizing various promising modeling approaches that focus on psychological data.

Signs of stellar activity such as large surface spots and radio flares are often related to binarity. UX Arietis is one of the most active members of the RS CVn class of binaries in which spin-up of a sub-giant/giant star by a close companion leads to the creation of magnetic fields. UX Arietis exhibits these signs of activity, originating mostly on the K0 sub-giant primary component. We measured the orbit with the CHARA interferometer and made images of a single large spot rotating in and out of view over a month in 2012. The rotation of the stars is synchronous with the orbit, and long-term photometric observations show that the spot or spots do not move much during intervals of a year. Our aim is to relate the positions of the stars and the spots on the primary to astrometry of the radio components observed during outbursts.

The Commission was created in 2006, in response to an initiative by members of the international interferometry community, and as a natural expansion of the work of the earlier Working Group on Optical/Infrared Interferometry. At that time, optical interferometry had been in regular use in modern astronomy for approximately 20 years, primarily with first and second generation prototype and experimental facilities. Also at this time, the first observatory-scale user facilities were coming into operation at ESO, Keck, and CHARA.

We report the first dynamic mass for an O-type supergiant, the interferometrically resolved SB2 system ζ Ori A (O9.5Ib+B0/1). The separation of the system excludes any previous mass-transfer, ensuring that the derived masses can be compared to single star evolutionary tracks.

We present results from the new Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) – the orbit of the double star Mizar A and measurements of Matar – which are compared to an orbit determined with the predecessor of NPOI, the Mark III Interferometer. Uncertainties of the orbital inclination are between 0.1 and 0.3 degrees; those of the semi-major axis are less than 0.5 percent. We determine the component masses and other parameters of the double star system, including relative photometry, directly through a fit to a combination of interferometric and spectroscopic data. Algorithms were developed to handle any hierarchical stellar system.
We describe plans for the study of spectroscopic double stars with NPOI, which draw from our experience with the Mark III binary program. This program yielded orbits of 26 stars, of which 17 were published with mass determinations of 24 components using spectroscopy. The accuracy of the physical parameters were often limited by the spectroscopy. We show that in order to benefit from the high precision of the interferometric observations, new high-precision spectroscopic observations, combined with improved algorithms for the detection of the secondaries, are required.

Summary
Abstract
We apply the binary black hole model to explain the wiggles in the milliarcsec radio jet of the superluminal quasar 1928+738 (4C73.18) observed with VLBI at 1.3 cm wavelength by Hummel et al. (1992). The period and amplitude of the wiggles can be explained as due to the orbital motion of a binary black hole with mass of order 108 solar masses, mass ratio larger than 0.1 and orbital radius ∼ 1016 cm. The jet's inclination to the line of sight should be small, confirming the standard interpretation of superluminal motion and one-sidedness as due to relativistic motion in a direction close to the line of sight. The small orbital radius suggests that the binary has been losing a significant amount of orbital energy during the last 107 years, possibly by interaction with the matter which is flowing through the active galactic nucleus.
Introduction
Galaxy mergers must have been a common phenomenon especially during the collapse and virialisation of rich groups and clusters of galaxies. These mergers lead to the formation of massive binary black holes in galactic nuclei if black holes of 107−9M⊙ are formed in the nuclei of most bright galaxies at redshifts of about 2. A massive binary black hole (MBBH) may manifest itself by Lens-Thirring precession of a jet emitted along the spin axis of one of the holes (Begelman et al. 1980, hereafter BBR).
