Evolution models of planetary systems find that resonant chains of planets often arise from the formation within protoplanetary disks. However, the occurrence of observed resonant chains, such as the notable TRAPPIST-1 system, is relatively low. This suggests that the majority of these chains become destabilized after the dissipation of the protoplanetary disk. Stellar tides, especially the wavelike dynamical tide, could be proposed as potential contributors to the destabilization of resonant chains. The dissipation of the dynamical tide, because of the frequency-dependant tidal excitation of stellar oscillation eigenmodes, potentially leads to a boost in migration for the close-in planets and disrupts the fragile stability of resonant chains. Thus, we investigate the influence of the stellar dynamical tide on multi-planet systems with taking their dissipation into account in the N-body code Posidonius. Notably, this research represents the first exploration of the impact of frequency-dependent dynamical tides on multi-planet systems.

Globular clusters (GCs) display anomalous light-elements abundances (HeCNONaMgAl), resembling the yields of hot-hydrogen burning, but there is no consensus yet on the origin of these ubiquitous multiple populations. We present a model in which a super-massive star (SMS, ≳103 M⊙) forms via stellar collisions during GC formation and pollutes the intra-cluster medium. The growth of the SMS finds a balance with the wind mass loss rate, such that the SMS can produce a significant fraction of the total GC mass in processed material, thereby overcoming the so-called mass-budget problem that plagues other models. Because of continuous rejuvenation, the SMS acts as a ‘conveyer-belt’ of hot-hydrogen burning yields with (relatively) low He abundances, in agreement with empirical constraints. Additionally, the amount of processed material per unit of GC mass correlates with GC mass, addressing the specific mass budget problem. We discuss uncertainties and tests of this new self-enrichment scenario.

We present stellar evolution models of young solar-type stars including self consistent treatment of rotational mixing and extraction of angular momentum (AM) by magnetized wind including the most up-to-date physic of AM transport.

The origin of Galactic halo stars and the contribution of globular clusters (GC) to this stellar population have long been (and still are) debated. The discovery of multiple stellar populations with peculiar chemical properties in GCs both in the Milky Way and in Local Group galaxies recently brought a renewal on these questions. Indeed most of the scenarios that compete to reproduce the present-day GC characteristics call for fast expulsion of both gas and low-mass stars from these clusters in their early infancy. In this framework, the initial masses of GCs could have been 8 to 25 times higher than their present-day stellar mass, and they could have contributed to 5 to 20 % of the low-mass stars in the Galactic halo. Here we revisit these conclusions, which are in tension with observations of dwarf galaxies and of young massive star clusters in the Local Group. We come back in particular on the paradigm of gas expulsion from massive star clusters, and propose an alternative interpretation of the GC abundance properties. We conclude by proposing a major revision of the current concepts regarding the role massive star clusters play in the assembly of galactic haloes.

A spectroscopic study comparing the [Na/Fe] distributions of RGB and AGB stars in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 6752 found that there was no Na-rich, 2nd-generation star along the early-AGB of this cluster. This came as a surprise since in this GC, as well as other Galactic GCs studied so far, 1st- and 2nd-generation stars have usually been found from the main sequence turnoff up to the red giant branch. To investigate whether the failure of a significant fraction of stars to ascend the AGB also happens to other GCs, we studied a sample of AGB and RGB stars in NGC 2808 observed at the ESO/VLT with FLAMES. Contrary to NGC 6752, we find that the AGB and RGB stars we studied in NGC 2808 have comparable [Na/Fe] dispersions.

Commission 35 (C35), “Stellar Constitution”, consists of members of the International Astronomical Union whose research spans many aspects of theoretical and observational stellar physics and it is mainly focused on the comprehension of the properties of stars, stellar populations and galaxies. The number of members of C35 increased progressively over the last ten years and currently C35 comprises about 400 members. C35 was part of Division IV (Stars) until 2014 and then became part of Division G (Stars and Stellar Physics), after the main IAU reorganisation in 2015. Four Working Groups have been created over the years under Division IV, initially, and Division G later: WG on Active B Stars, WG on Massive Stars, WG on Abundances in Red Giant and WG on Chemically Peculiar and Related Stars. In the last decade the Commission had 4 presidents, Wojciech Dziembowski (2003-2006), Francesca D'Antona (2006-2009), Corinne Charbonnel (2009-2012) and Marco Limongi (2012-2015), who were assisted by an Organizing Committee (OC), usually composed of about 10 members, all of them elected by the C35 members and holding their positions for three years. The C35 webpage (http://iau-c35.stsci.edu) has been designed and continuously maintained by Claus Leitherer from the Space Telescope Institute, who deserves our special thanks. In addition to the various general information on the Commission structure and activities, it contains links to various resources, of interest for the members, such as stellar models, evolutionary tracks and isochrones, synthetic stellar populations, stellar yields and input physics (equation of state, nuclear cross sections, opacity tables), provided by various groups. The main activity of the C35 OC is that of evaluating, ranking and eventually supporting the proposals for IAU sponsored meetings. In the last decade the Commission has supported several meetings focused on topics more or less relevant to C35. Since the primary aim of this document is to present the main activity of C35 over the last ten years, in the following we present some scientific highlights that emerged from the most relevant IAU Symposia and meetings supported and organized by C35 in the last decade.

Several models presented in the literature compete to explain the origin of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GC), but they all fail to reproduce the large variety of present-day characteristics of these systems. In parallel, independent clues on GC early evolution may be derived from observations of young massive clusters (YMC) in the Local Group. But are these two populations of clusters related? And can we reconcile the informations and data concerning GCs and YMCs? Here we summarize some open questions on the nucleosynthetic origin of multiple stellar populations in GCs, on the actual evolution and characteristics of GC low-mass stars, and on early gas expulsion from massive clusters. We propose theoretical paths to be explored in the near future.

We present our first results on a new sample containing all single G, K and M giants down to V = 4 mag in the Solar vicinity, suitable for spectropolarimetric (Stokes V) observations with Narval at TBL, France. For detection and measurement of the magnetic field (MF), the Least Squares Deconvolution (LSD) method was applied (Donati et al. 1997) that in the present case enables detection of large-scale MFs even weaker than the solar one (the typical precision of our longitudinal MF measurements is 0.1-0.2 G). The evolutionary status of the stars is determined on the basis of the evolutionary models with rotation (Lagarde et al. 2012; Charbonnel et al., in prep.) and fundamental parameters given by Massarotti et al. (1998). The stars appear to be in the mass range 1-4 M⊙, situated at different evolutionary stages after the Main Sequence (MS), up to the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB).

The sample contains 45 stars. Up to now, 29 stars are observed (that is about 64% of the sample), each observed at least twice. For 2 stars in the Hertzsprung gap, one is definitely Zeeman detected. Only 5 G and K giants, situated mainly at the base of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) and in the He-burning phase are detected. Surprisingly, a lot of stars ascending towards the RGB tip and in early AGB phase are detected (8 of 13 observed stars). For all Zeeman detected stars v sin i is redetermined and appears in the interval 2-3 km/s, but few giants with MF possess larger v sin i.

Pollux is considered as an archetype of a giant star hosting a planet: its radial velocity (RV) presents sinusoidal variations with a period of about 590 d, which have been stable for more than 25 years. Using ESPaDOnS and Narval we have detected a weak (sub-gauss) magnetic field at the surface of Pollux and followed up its variations with Narval during 4.25 years, i.e. more than for two periods of the RV variations. The longitudinal magnetic field is found to vary with a sinusoidal behaviour with a period close to that of the RV variations and with a small shift in phase. We then performed a Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) investigation from the Stokes V and Stokes I least-squares deconvolution (LSD) profiles. A rotational period is determined, which is consistent with the period of variations of the RV. The magnetic topology is found to be mainly poloidal and this component almost purely dipolar. The mean strength of the surface magnetic field is about 0.7 G. As an alternative to the scenario in which Pollux hosts a close-in exoplanet, we suggest that the magnetic dipole of Pollux can be associated with two temperature and macroturbulent velocity spots which could be sufficient to produce the RV variations. We finally investigate the scenarii of the origin of the magnetic field which could explain the observed properties of Pollux.

We have observed the giant star 31 Comae in April and May 2013 with the spectropolarimeter Narval at Pic du Midi Observatory, France. 31 Comae is a single, rapidly rotating giant with rotational period ~6.8 d and vsini ~ 67 km/s. We present measurements and discuss variability of the longitudinal magnetic field (Bl), spectral activity indicators Hα, CaII H&K, Ca II IR triplet and evolutionary status. Our future aim is to perform a Zeeman-Doppler imaging study for the star.

Commission 35 consists of members of the International Astronomical Union whose research is concerned with the structure and evolution of stars in all parts of the H-R diagram. Their interests range from various aspects of stellar interior physics, such as convection, diffusion, rotation, magnetic fields, to asteroseismology and the prediction of the evolutionary and nucleosynthetic histories of stars that are of vital importance for our understanding of stellar populations and galactic chemical evolution.

This Division IV was started on a trial basis at the General Assembly in The Hague 1994 and was formally accepted at the Kyoto General Assembly in 1997. Its broad coverage of “Stars” is reflected in its relatively large number of Commissions and so of members (1266 in late 2011). Its kindred Division V, “Variable Stars”, has the same history of its beginning. The thinking at the time was to achieve some kind of balance between the number of members in each of the 12 Divisions. Amid the current discussion of reorganizing the number of Divisions into a more compact form it seems advisable to make this numerical balance less of an issue than the rationalization of the scientific coverage of each Division, so providing more effective interaction within a particular field of astronomy. After all, every star is variable to a certain degree and such variability is becoming an ever more powerful tool to understand the characteristics of every kind of normal and peculiar star. So we may expect, after hearing the reactions of members, that in the restructuring a single Division will result from the current Divisions IV and V.

A business meeting of the IAU Commission 35 was held during the GA in Rio on Friday, August 7, 2009, with a few members of the Commission in attendance. Special care will be taken to have more members attending the BM at the next GA in Bejing in 2012. The points discussed during the BM are summarized below and are posted on the C35 website http://iau-c35.stsci.edu.

Low-mass stars exhibit, at all stages of their evolution, the signatures of complex physical processes that require challenging modelling beyond standard stellar theory. In this review, we focus on lithium depletion in low-mass stars. After disecting the Li dip, we discuss how large scale mixing due to rotation and internal gravity waves may interact to explain this feature. We also briefly discuss the impact that is expected on Population II stars.

Thermohaline mixing has been recently identified as the dominating process that governs the photospheric composition of low-mass bright giant stars (Charbonnel & Zahn 2007a). Here we present the predictions of stellar models computed with the code STAREVOL that takes into account this mechanism together with rotational mixing and atomic diffusion. We compare our theorical predictions with recent observations and discuss how the corresponding yields for 3He are compatible with the observed behaviour of this light element in our Galaxy.

The “stellar” solution to the cosmological lithium problem proposes that surface depletion of lithium in low-mass, metal-poor stars can reconcile the lower abundances found for Galactic halo stars with the primordial prediction. Globular clusters are ideal environments for studies of the surface evolution of lithium, with large number statistics possible to obtain for main sequence stars as well as giants. We discuss the Li abundances measured for >450 stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397, focusing on the evidence for lithium depletion and especially highlighting how the inferred abundances and interpretations are affected by early cluster self-enrichment and systematic uncertainties in the effective temperature determination.
