A serological technique, the precipitin test, was examined as a method for determining the feeding habits of the spider Pardosa sternalis Thorell (Araneae: Lycosidae). Radial immunodiffusion responses were significantly influenced by quantity of prey consumed, the time elapsed between spider feeding and serological analysis, and the temperature at which spiders were maintained after feeding. Maximum antigen detection time after feeding was 150–200 h for spiders fed varying quantities of prey and held at 25°C and over 400 h for those held at 4°C. Ouchterlony double diffusion tests indicated that although two congeneric prey species could be distinguished from one another, significant cross-reactivity between the two was observed. No such cross-reactivity occurred between more distantly related prey species. The feasibility for utilizing precipitin analyses in field studies of predator–prey relationships is discussed.

Test and retest scores on the Symptom Rating Test (SRT), Manifest Anxiety Scale (MAS) and Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) were obtained from 45 non-psychotic psychiatric in-patients. The change in scores and the score distributions were examined to assess the extent to which these tests meet Foulds' criteria for measures belonging respectively to the universes of personality and personal illness. MPI Extraversion emerged as a stable, normally distributed, personality trait in contrast to the SRT which showed the characteristics of a symptom-state measure. MPI Neuroticism and MAS scores could not be allocated definitively to either universe and seemed to be hybrids. It is suggested that more attention must be paid to the ‘ purity’ of scales if meaningful interpretation is to be made in treatment assessment.

Explicit relations are derived for the dependence of the longshore wavenumber on the wave frequency of symmetric trapped waves or edge waves travelling near the cutoff frequency over submerged horizontally symmetric thin bodies or near-vertical cliffs. Results for particular geometries are presented and shown to agree with certain explicit solutions for edge waves over sloping beaches or trapped waves over a submerged narrow shelf, or a semicircular mound on the sea bed. Similar results are obtained for thin bodies extending vertically throughout the depth in open channels or for thin cross-sections in an acoustic wave guide.

The effects of a vertical baffle on the resonant frequencies of fluid within a rectangular container are investigated using the linearized theory of water waves. The accuracy of simple approximate solutions is assessed by comparison with an accurate solution based on eigenfunction expansions. It is found that a surface-piercing barrier can change the resonant frequencies significantly while the effect of a bottom-mounted barrier is usually negligible.

The existence of surface waves trapped above a submerged horizontal cylinder was shown by Ursell to depend upon the vanishing of a certain infinite determinant. Here, the determinant is evaluated numerically and the dispersion curves found. It is shown that the mild slope equation may be used to determine the dispersion relation and surface profiles with good accuracy and with less computational effort than the full linear theory.

The numerical method of Longuet-Higgins & Cokelet (1976), for waves on deep water, is extended to account for a horizontal bottom contour, and used to investigate breaking waves in water of finite depth. It is demonstrated that a variety of overturning motions may be generated, ranging from the projection of a small-scale jet at the wave crest (of the type that might initiate a spilling breaker) to large-scale plunging breakers involving a significant portion of the wave. Although there seems to be a continuous transition between these wave types, a remarkable similarity is noticed in the overturning regions of many of the waves.
Three high-resolution computations are also discussed. The results are presented in the form of interrelated space-, velocity- and acceleration-plane plots which enable the time evolution of individual fluid particles to be followed. These computations should be found useful for the testing of analytical theories, and may also be applied, for example, to studies of slamming forces on shipping and coastal structures.

Edge-wave solutions to the linearized shallow-water equations for water waves are well known for a variety of bottom topographies. The only explicit solution using the full linearized theory describes edge waves over a uniformly sloping beach, although the existence of such waves has been established for a wide class of bottom geometries. In this paper the full linearized theory is used to derive the properties of edge waves over a shelf. In particular, curves are presented showing the variation of frequency with wavenumber along the shelf, together with some mode shapes for a particular shelf geometry.
