Summary
This chapter focuses on women’s preferences in mate selection, which have evolved as a suite of adaptations designed to solve women’s problems associated with reproduction. We first summarize basic differences in women’s reproductive rate and metabolic costs associated with reproduction that have shaped women’s mating preferences. We then summarize women’s short-term-mating preferences, designed primarily to identify mates who possess “good genes” cues that would ensure healthy offspring, followed by a summary of women’s long-term mating preferences, designed primarily to identify mates capable and interested in investing in women and offspring. We discuss how women’s ovulatory cycle, in which conception risk varies across their monthly cycle, modulates women’s mating preferences, particularly short-term mating preferences. This is followed by a summary of how environmental factors, such as the presence of resources or threatening conspecifics, modulate women’s mating preferences, indicating the context-sensitivity of women’s preferences. Finally, we discuss how individual differences in women’s personality traits further modulate short-term and long-term mating preferences.

Summary
This chapter focuses on the behaviors employed by men in the service of attracting mates, which we discuss as having emerged to solve specific reproductive problems faced by women. We consider behaviors employed by men to attract mates in short-term mating and long-term mating contexts, given the differential valuation on certain behavioral repertoire that emerge. In short-term mating, we specifically consider behavioral displays of dominance with their dispositional and situational antecedents before discussing men’s pursuit of distinctiveness and humor use, behaviors ostensibly indicative of good genes. In long-term mating, our discussion centers around the desirability of different resource displays and benevolence. We further discuss cues ostensibly diagnostic of paternal investment ability and an interest in monogamy. Our final section addresses how modern mating markets present adaptive problems for men (e.g., online dating, appearance enhancing behaviors) and how men seek to solve the new problems that have emerged.

The Providence Limestone member of the Dugger Formation in Indiana and its lithologic correlatives in the southern part of the Illinois Basin are thin lime mudstones to packstones lying stratigraphically between the Herrin and Hymera Coal Members of the Dugger Formation and their equivalents. The purposes of the study are to describe and correlate the Providence conodont fauna and to apply biofacies analysis and petrographic study to interpreting the paleoenvironments.
Providence conodonts are dominated by representatives of the Idiognathodus-Streptognathodus plexus. Hindeodus is abundant; Neognathodus is common; and Idioprioniodus, Adetognathus, and Diplognathodus are common only in some sections. Aethotaxis is a minor constituent.
Conodont biofacies reflect a shallow, nearshore, low- to moderate-energy marine environment. The Idiognathodus-Streptognathodus plexus indicates quiet to moderately elevated energy levels. Hindeodus replaces part of the Idiognathodus-Streptognathodus plexus in higher energy conditions. Diplognathodus has an affinity for low to slightly elevated energy conditions. Migration during ontogeny to quite, organic-rich water from a more open, slightly higher energy environment is indicated for Streptognathodus oppletus.
Assignment to the Neognathodus dilatus-N. roundyi zone indicates a middle Desmoinesian age. The new species Diplognathodus indianaensis is morphologically intermediate between the early Desmoinesian D. coloradoensis and the late Desmoinesian D. illinoisensis and allows refinement of a Diplognathodus-based zonation.

HAYNES 230 is a solid solution strengthened, face centered cubic (FCC), nickelbased superalloy, with a small amount (1–5 vol. %) of semi-coherent FCC carbides. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed to study the interaction of the carbides with the matrix during tensile and compressive loading. The behavior of the elastic lattice strains during in situ loading clearly showed a tension-compression asymmetry. Although the volume percentage is small, the interaction between the carbides and the matrix had a significant effect on the load sharing. In compression, the carbides began load sharing at the macroscopic yield point, while the tension test suggests no load sharing. Debonding at the carbide-matrix interface is proposed to explain the lack of load sharing during the tensile loading based on the disparities observed between the experimental results and the finite element models.

The application of exit-plane wave function (EPWF) images for an atomic-scale compositional mapping of interfaces in the GaAs-AlAs system is investigated. Image simulations based on the multislice algorithm were performed to obtain EPWF images over a wide range of compositions and specimen thicknesses. The EPWF-amplitude images were further analyzed by the method of factorial analysis of correspondence. A simultaneous analysis of the effects both thickness and composition on image contrast yielded two eigenvectors representing the individual contributions from the two effects. This separation was however not complete, leaving a residual contribution from thickness on the composition-sensitive eigenvector and vice versa. Extraction of the chemical content from the composition-sensitive eigenvector is still possible by a parameterization of the residual thickness contribution. A simpler procedure for quantifying the composition across an interface is proposed based on the analysis of images of AlxGa(1-x)As with different Al/Ga composition but same specimen thickness.

Twenty-three episodes of pseudobacteremia occurring over a seven-month period were traced to cross-contamination by the automated blood culture analyzer (BACTEC 460) used in the microbiology laboratory. An epidemiologic investigation of an unusual cluster of three patients with pseudobacteremia caused by oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus led to the identification of the problem. Mock trials of the blood culture procedure confirmed that the blood culture analyzer was the source of contamination. After the needle sterilizer was replaced by the manufacturer, the problem of cross-contamination abated. Contamination of sterile blood cultures by an instrument intended to identify bacteremia rapidly may lead to incorrect diagnosis, unnecessary administration of antibiotics and prolonged hospitalization. Because of the widespread use of automated blood culture analyzers in the US, physicians, microbiologists, and infection control personnel should be alert to the possibility of cross-contamination and the subtle way in which it may present.
