Empirically-based economic injury levels are lacking for pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae), as a direct pest of dry peas, Pisum sativum Linnaeus (Fabaceae). To address this need, the relationship between pea aphid density and yield of dry pea (cultivar Aragorn) were quantified by encaging pea aphids at varying densities for 17-day infestation periods during 2009 and 2010 in Moscow, Idaho, United States of America. Pea aphid density after infestation at the early reproductive stage of the crop (x) significantly reduced dry pea seed yield (relative weight of US #1 dry peas, y): y = 0.7733 − 0.00998x + 0.000037x2. Economic injury levels were computed based on this relationship and incorporating the cost of control, crop market value, insecticide efficacy, and crop yield potential. The resulting economic injury levels ranged from five to 19 pea aphids per plant at the start of early reproductive growth stages of dry peas. For usability these were converted to sweep net sample size equivalents of 86–307 pea aphids per twenty-five 180-degree sweeps with a standard sweep net. These economic injury levels are applicable in the inland Pacific Northwest, United States of America, where they were developed and likely in other regions with similar climatic and agronomic conditions.

The field of molecular biology is an important part of research into neoplastic conditions. Much of this research requires access to human tissue samples, which may need to be collected and stored in a specific way, according to the type of study for which they are intended. Anonymous clinical information about the samples enables researchers to apply results to different patient groups. Access to stored tissues is particularly important in head and neck disease research as many neoplastic conditions affecting this area have a relatively low incidence. Consequently, it may take a long time to build up enough individual cases to make a study worthwhile.
We describe here the current legal, ethical and practical issues of research tissue banking, with regard to head and neck disease.

UNC Charlotte is a young and growing research university. Most of the Ph.D. programs on our campus have been designed to be interdisciplinary. This strategic choice was made for both economic and pedagogical reasons. At the heart of the drive for interdisciplinary degree programs is the recognition that a lack of educational diversity at the Ph.D. level is limiting for new graduates in today's research and discovery landscape. This need for educational diversity is even more acute in the sciences. We need more chemists that know more physics, and we need more physicists that know more biology, and we need more engineers that understand matter at a molecular scale.
To this end, faculty in the departments of chemistry, optical sciences, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering have designed and are implementing a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in “Nanoscale Science”. Research involving nanoscale materials and phenomena requires an educational perspective far broader than traditional academic disciplines currently offer. The question is how to deliver a broad graduate education that enables each student to reach an expertise required for the Ph.D. This is the question that has driven our pedagogical development of this Nanoscale science program.
The overall structure of this program will be described and compared to other current efforts in Nanoscale graduate education throughout the United States. Various novel features will be discussed, with the hope for critical feedback and discussion. Details of the educational opportunities we have designed and the method of assessment we will employ will be presented.

In this paper the preliminary results of incorporating a novel active layer into a GaN light emitting diode (LED) are discussed. Integration of colloidal CdSe quantum dots into a GaN LED active layer is demonstrated. The conductivity of the overgrowth was examined by circular transmission line method (CTLM). Effects on surface roughness due to the active layer incorporation are examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). LED test devices were fabricated and electroluminescence was demonstrated, the devices exhibit higher turn-on voltages than would be expected for a CdSe active layer.

We present photoluminescence excitation spectra for glasses doped with CdSxSe(1-x). The peak of the emission spectrum is blue shifted toward the bandgap as excitation energy flux is increased. Total photoluminescence emission intensity is observed to be significantly enhanced and blue shifted by exciting with photon energies greater than ∼4 eV. A simple model of the nanoparticle band structure is presented to account for the observed spectra.

Race relations have become one of the most sensitive of international issues. They have been transformed from the domestic concern of single countries to a matter of world concern. The story of this transformation is almost too well-known for comment. It grew from a massive revulsion against fascist racialism, the decline of white dominance, the emergence of new states from colonial empires, and the growing dependence of developed countries on the raw materials of the less developed. The United Nations Organisation has, in addition, given the non-white majority a forum from which they can condemn countries maintaining racial stratification. It is clear, therefore, that a breakdown in racial prejudice would not only ease some world tensions, but is a desirable end in itself.

This investigation was designed to determine whether significant alterations in the metabolism of nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus occur in psychiatric patients during the therapeutic administration of electric convulsive treatments. Gour and Chaudhry (1) observed transient changes in serum calcium following grand mal convulsions in a series of patients. Jarvie and Mulligan (2), repeating this experiment in patients receiving muscular relaxants during the administration of E.C.T., failed to demonstrate similar calcium changes. More intimate knowledge of electrolyte metabolism can be obtained by means of balance techniques (3), whereby the degree of retention or loss of a particular substance can be ascertained by maintaining each patient on a constant daily intake and regularly determining the urinary and stool excretion of that substance.
