Pressure-driven flow in the presence of heat transfer through a microchannel patterned with parallel ridges is considered. The coupled effects of curvature and thermocapillary stress along the menisci are captured. Streamwise and transverse thermocapillary stresses along menisci cause the flow to be three-dimensional, but when the Reynolds number based on the transverse flow is small the streamwise and transverse flows decouple. In this limit, we solve the streamwise flow problem, i.e. that in the direction parallel to the ridges, using a suite of asymptotic limits and techniques – each previously shown to have wide ranges of validity thereby extending results by Hodes et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 814, 2017, pp. 301–324) for a flat meniscus. First, we take the small-ridge-period limit, and then we account for the curvature of the menisci with two further complementary limits: (i) small meniscus curvature using boundary perturbation; (ii) arbitrary meniscus curvature but for small slip (or cavity) fractions using conformal mapping and the Poisson integral formula. Heating and cooling the liquid always degrade and enhance (apparent) slip, respectively, but their effect is greatest for large meniscus protrusions, with positive protrusion (into the liquid) being the most sensitive. For strong enough heating the solutions become complex, suggesting instability, with large positive protrusions transitioning first.

The role of Cu in CdTe/CdS solar cell instability remains the subject of much debate. The investigation of a range of ‘Cu’-contacted CdTe/CdS cells, which had received various thermal stress treatments, is described. Cells that were stressed in air exhibit strong current-voltage (I-V) rollover and junction degradation. No such degradation was observed for ‘Cu’-contacted cells that had been stressed in dry-N2 atmosphere. Cu is found to diffuse rapidly through the cell structure during back contact annealing and to accumulate in the CdS layer. With stress, significant levels of Cu dope the grain bulk, producing (with Cl) high resistance, photoconducting CdS. This behavior is independent of stress atmosphere and is, therefore, unlikely to (initially) be a dominating mechanism for cell degradation. Our results suggest simple air oxidation of the back contact interface to be a likely origin of I-V rollover in CdTe/CdS cells.

Copper doped CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and larger nanocrystals were deposited by chemical solution deposition at two different temperatures (5°C and 80°C) and their morphological, optical and surface properties compared with similarly deposited undoped CdSe. Crystal sizes and structure were investigated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. All the samples exhibited cubic (sphalerite) structure except for the 80°C Cu-doped ones which were substantially hexagonal (wurtzite). For the 5°C samples, the crystal sizes were similar for the doped and undoped samples (ca. 3.4 nm). For the 80°C samples, the crystal size of the doped CdSe was much larger (84 nm) than the undoped one (6.3 nm) and extensive twinning occurred. Optical measurements on the doped samples showed the presence of surface states due to the copper seen as an increase in absorbance in the long wavelength region. Xray photoemission spectroscopy similarly showed tails in the valence band spectra of the doped samples. These tails were dominant in the 5°C samples and less so for the 80°C ones. XPS also showed that the Cu was present predominantly in the univalent state. The copper was found to be located on the QD surface for the 2–3 nm QDs and distributed both on the surface and in the bulk (or at twin boundaries) for the larger nanoparticles.

CdS and CdSe films electrodeposited from chalcogen-containing non-aqueous electrolytes are shown to possess a nanocrystalline structure and exhibit 3-D quantum size effects. A large variation in optical transmission spectra, due for the most part to this sizequantization, is shown. Photoelectrochemical activity of the as-deposited films is discussed in terms of their nano-structure. Extension of the crystallite size effects to a metalinsulator transition in MoO2 deposited from a similar electrolyte is mentioned.
