Background
It is unclear whether there is a direct link between economic crises and changes in suicide rates.
AimsThe Lopez-Ibor Foundation launched an initiative to study the possible impact of the economic crisis on European suicide rates.
MethodData was gathered and analysed from 29 European countries and included the number of deaths by suicide in men and women, the unemployment rate, the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, the annual economic growth rate and inflation.
ResultsThere was a strong correlation between suicide rates and all economic indices except GPD per capita in men but only a correlation with unemployment in women. However, the increase in suicide rates occurred several months before the economic crisis emerged.
ConclusionsOverall, this study confirms a general relationship between the economic environment and suicide rates; however, it does not support there being a clear causal relationship between the current economic crisis and an increase in the suicide rate.

Charney's target article convincingly demonstrates the need for the discipline of quantitative human behavior genetics to discard its false assumptions and to employ the techniques, assumptions, and research program characteristic of modern developmental psychobiology.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Allostasis is a concept developed originally by neurobiologist Peter Sterling and epidemiologist James Eyer to explain the physiological basis for changes in patterns of human morbidity and mortality. They observed that the baby boom generation of individuals born after World War II had reached an age when major causes of death were renal, cerebral, and cardiovascular disease and that the single largest contributor to these diseases was hypertension. These researchers could find no explanation for these findings and no explanation for why hypertension was most prevalent where social disruption was greatest (Sterling and Eyer, 1988). They argued that the only possible link between the sociopsychological and physiological phenomena is in the brain. Using this backdrop, they argued for a form of brain-body regulation different from homeostasis, that of allostasis.
Homeostasis can be defined as “preserving constancy in the internal environment.” Allostasis can be defined as stability through change. Claude Bernard is credited with being the first to suggest that the internal milieu of the body is critically important for establishing and maintaining stable states within the body (this concept was later termed homeostasis by Walter Cannon in 1926). Bernard argued as early as 1859–60 that two environments affect an organism: a general milieu that is the outside world of inanimate and animate objects, and an internal milieu, where the elements of a living body find an optimal climate for operation. Originally described largely for the circulatory system, Bernard later argued for involvement of the lymphatic systems as well (Cannon, 1929, 1932, 1935).
Bernard further argued that not only was an organism required to respond to outside stimuli to regulate energy by bodily adjustments, but that the body also maintained the internal milieu remarkably constant in the face of such challenges making the organism at some level independent of the exterior challenges. Finally, he argued that all the vital mechanisms of the body have but one goal of maintaining the conditions of the life of the internal milieu constant (Cannon, 1929, 1932, 1935).

Ontogenetic factors constrain the evolution of species-typical traits. Because human infants are born “prematurely” relative to other primates, the development of handedness during infancy can reveal important ontogenetic influences on handedness that may have contributed to the evolution of the human species-typical trait of a population-level right-hand dominance.

The procedures used to ensure reliable occurrences of the A-not-B error distort and miss essential features of Piaget's original observations. A model that meshes a mental event, highly restricted by testing procedures, to the dynamics of bodily movement is of limited value. To embody more than just perseverative reaching, the formal model must incorporate Piaget's essential features.

Summary
Paul Van Geert's chapter provides a lucid explanation of the dynamic systems approach that will be invaluable in orienting the reader to the other contributions in this volume. Dynamic systems theory was developed to explain the organization and maintenance of physical and biological systems that appear to defy the second law of thermodynamics (i.e. the law of entropy). The editors of this volume hope to demonstrate that dynamic systems theory can provide a framework for understanding one's “identity” or “self” as a stable system that may yet change over time in a lawful manner. They propose that this system emerges from the interaction of component elements, including cognition, emotion, and contextual experience.
If the dynamic systems approach is to be a guiding framework for studying the development of self and identity, then it should offer novel solutions to old problems or redefine what constitutes a problem. Only the experts who study these phenomena can determine whether it does so. We would like to highlight certain issues raised by Van Geert's description of the characteristics of dynamic systems that should be kept in mind during such evaluation.
Van Geert begins by emphasizing that dynamic systems involve a set of component elements. This seemingly obvious fact is actually quite important because several features of dynamic systems might also seem applicable to phenomena conceived as unanalyzable wholes. Thus, one who views identity as a unitary phenomenon might observe that it develops in a discontinuous fashion and assumes a limited range of values within a particular time period.

Research pragmatics, not a defective conceptual framework, supports modern biological reductionism. Conducting research to reveal the casual web underlying the multiple developmental pathways leading to any species-specific characteristic requires better research techniques than those commonly used. It takes much patience, time, and effort to gain even small glimpses of an answer to any developmental question.
