Experiments were conducted over 4 yr to investigate the effects of four postemergence herbicides on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Williams 79’] yield under weed-free conditions. Bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide], acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}, and naptalam/dinoseb {2-[(1-naphthalenylamino)carbonyl] benzoic acid}/[2-(1-methylpropyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol] alone and in combination with 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) butyric acid] applied to soybeans at the V3 and V5 soybean growth stages caused early crop injury, but soybeans outgrew most of the injury by 21 days and there was no effect on yield. Bentazon plus 2,4-DB with or without adjuvant did not affect the yield of five soybean cultivars tested.

Incorporation of futures markets into the theory of the firm under uncertainty has received considerable attention in risk management. A theoretical model of optimal firm decisions in cash and futures markets considering price, production, and financial risks is presented. Production and marketing strategies for corn and soybeans in Georgia and Illinois are analyzed to determine the optimal amount of futures contracting which may be a hedge or a speculative position. A partial hedge is optimal for most situations for risk averse producers when the amount hedged is variable. With fixed quantity transactions, speculative and cash positions, but not hedging, tend to be E-V efficient.

Background: Studies of both clinical and non-clinical voice hearers suggest that distress is rather inconsistently associated with the perceived relationship between voice and hearer. It is also not clear if their beliefs about voices are relevant. Aims: This study investigated the links between attachment anxiety/avoidance, interpersonal aspects of the voice relationship, and distress whilst considering the impact of beliefs about voices and paranoia. Method: Forty-four voice-hearing participants completed a number of self-report measures tapping attachment, interpersonal processes in the voice relationship, beliefs about voices, paranoia, distress and depression. Results: Attachment avoidance was related to voice intrusiveness, hearer distance and distress. Attachment anxiety was related to voice intrusiveness, hearer dependence and distress. A series of simple mediation analyses were conducted that suggest that the relationship between attachment and voice related distress may be mediated by interpersonal dynamics in the voice-hearer relationship, beliefs about voices and paranoia. Conclusions: Beliefs about voices, the hearer's relationship with their voices, and the distress voices sometimes engender appear to be meaningfully related to their attachment style. This may be important to consider in therapeutic work.

A biosocial model of the effects of early adolescent testosterone levels and religiosity on adolescent males' sexual attitudes and activity over a 3-year period was examined. Using panel data for approximately 100 boys who were 12·5/13·0 years old at study entry, significant additive effects of free testosterone and frequency of attendance at religious services were demonstrated on the transition to first intercourse and other aspects of sexual behaviour and attitudes. No interactive effects of the two predictors were found. Boys with higher free testosterone levels at study entry who never or infrequently attended religious services were the most sexually active and had the most permissive attitudes. Boys with lower free testosterone who attended services once a week or more were the least active and reported the least permissive attitudes. For some behaviours, differences between free testosterone/attendance groups increased over time, resulting in substantial behavioural differences by the final round of measurement 3 years later.

Bulk samples of transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) in the Zn-In-Sn and Ga-In-Sn oxide systems were prepared by solid state processing. Phase relations and physical properties were determined and the results compared to similar measurements on thin film materials.

Solid state bulk processing techniques were used to synthesize various transparent conducting oxides (TCO's) with In, Zn, and Sn cations. Optical and electronic properties of resultant phase-pure TCO's were compared to each other and to bulk samples of Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO). Reduction and heat treatment showed significant effects on optical and electronic performance, indicating optimization of processing conditions will be required for industrial applications.
Comparison of optical and electronic properties in the series of compounds: ZnkIn2O3+k, k = 3,4,5,7,11 revealed trends correlated with the materials’ internal structure. These layered compounds showed improvement of optical properties at higher Zn contents and improvement in conductivity at higher In contents. The trends suggest these materials may be useful for applications where tradeoffs between conductivity and transparency are acceptable.
The Effect of Certain Triazines on C14O2 Fixation in Red Kidney Beans

Several triazines exhibit high phytotoxicity towards many species of higher plants and are being extensively studied as possible herbicides. Moreland et al. and Exer reported that 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine, simazine, inhibited the photochemical activity of isolated chloroplasts. Exer also presented evidence that the inhibited reaction involved the photochemical reduction of DPN, diphosphopyridine-nucleotide. Gast has shown that in Coleus Blunei Benth. simazine blocked starch production in the light and that this effect was overcome by the addition of sucrose to starch-free leaves in the dark. These results indicated interference of photosynthetic CO2 fixation by simazine. Roth reported that simazine inhibited photosynthesis in Elodea but had a stimulating effect on respiration. In light of these findings a study of the effect of simazine and certain related triazines on the photosynthetic CO2 fixation of red kidney bean was undertaken.
