The discovery of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave signal has generated follow-up observations by over 50 facilities world-wide, ushering in the new era of multi-messenger astronomy. In this paper, we present follow-up observations of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart SSS17a/DLT17ck (IAU label AT2017gfo) by 14 Australian telescopes and partner observatories as part of Australian-based and Australian-led research programs. We report early- to late-time multi-wavelength observations, including optical imaging and spectroscopy, mid-infrared imaging, radio imaging, and searches for fast radio bursts. Our optical spectra reveal that the transient source emission cooled from approximately 6 400 K to 2 100 K over a 7-d period and produced no significant optical emission lines. The spectral profiles, cooling rate, and photometric light curves are consistent with the expected outburst and subsequent processes of a binary neutron star merger. Star formation in the host galaxy probably ceased at least a Gyr ago, although there is evidence for a galaxy merger. Binary pulsars with short (100 Myr) decay times are therefore unlikely progenitors, but pulsars like PSR B1534+12 with its 2.7 Gyr coalescence time could produce such a merger. The displacement (~2.2 kpc) of the binary star system from the centre of the main galaxy is not unusual for stars in the host galaxy or stars originating in the merging galaxy, and therefore any constraints on the kick velocity imparted to the progenitor are poor.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are a growing problem in the United States. We explored the feasibility of active laboratory-based surveillance of CRE in a metropolitan area not previously considered to be an area of CRE endemicity. We provide a framework to address CRE surveillance and to monitor changes in the incidence of CRE infection over time.

We investigate the occurrence of water vapour signatures in a total of 10 red giants in the solar neighbourhood at mid-infrared wavelengths (12 μm). With the use of high resolution spectra from TEXES and synthesized spectra based on MARCS model atmospheres, we analyse the differences and discuss plausible causes. These include abundance adjustments, the addition of non-photospheric components (MOLspheres) and a different temperature profile.

A large outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease was associated with Stafford District General Hospital. A total of 68 confirmed cases was treated in hospital and 22 of these patients died. A further 35 patients, 14 of whom were treated at home, were suspected cases of Legionnaires’ disease. All these patients had visited the hospital during April 1985. Epidemiological investigations demonstrated that there had been a high risk of acquiring the disease in the out patient department (OPD), but no risk in other parts of the hospital. The epidemic strain of Legionella pneumophila, serogroup 1, subgroup Pontiac la was isolated from the cooling water system of one of the air conditioning plants. This plant served several departments of the hospital including the OPD. The water in the cooling tower and a chiller unit which cooled the air entering the OPD were contaminated with legionellae. Bacteriological and engineering investigations showed how the chiller unit could have been contaminated and how an aerosol containing legionellae could have been generated in the U–trap below the chiller unit. These results, together with the epidemiological evidence, suggest that the chiller unit was most likely to have been the major source of the outbreak.

Nearly one third of hospital staff had legionella antibodies. These staff were likely to have worked in areas of the hospital ventilated by the contaminated air conditioning plant, but not necessarily the OPD. There was evidence that a small proportion of these staff had a mild legionellosis and that these ‘influenza–like’ illnesses had been spread over a 5–month period. A possible explanation of this finding is that small amounts of aerosol from cooling tower sources could have entered the air–intake and been distributed throughout the areas of the hospital served by this ventilation system. Legionellae, subsequently found to be of the epidemic strain, had been found in the cooling tower pond in November 1984 and thus it is possible that staff were exposed to low doses of contaminated aerosol over several months.

Control measures are described, but it was later apparent that the outbreak had ended before these interventions were introduced. The investigations revealed faults in the design of the ventilation system.

In October 1985, six cases of legionnaires' disease were associated with a police headquarters building. Four were amongst staff who worked in or visited the communications wing of the headquarters and two cases occurred in the local community. A case-control study implicated the operations room of the communications wing as the main area associated with infection. This wing was air-conditioned and smoke tracer studies showed that drift from the exhaust as well as from the base of the cooling tower entered the main air-intake which serviced the air-conditioning system. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 subgroup pontiac was isolated from water and sludge in the cooling tower pond. Contaminated drift from the top of the cooling tower was probably responsible for the two community cases. An additional discovery was that symptoms suggestive of the sick-building syndrome were associated with working in this wing.

We have studied the kinetics of NiSi agglomeration and NiSi2 phase formation during heating of NiSi on Si, using simultaneous in situ measurements of resistance, light scattering and x-ray diffraction. NiSi is a desirable contact to Si because of its low resistivity, limited Si consumption and low formation temperature. However, the formation of the higher resistivity phase NiSi2 must be avoided for device applications. Ni thin films 5 to 30 nm thick were deposited on substrates of poly-Si and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and were studied using heating rates from 0.3 to 27 °C/s. At low heating rates and for the thinnest films studied, NiSi agglomeration precedes NiSi2 nucleation by as much as 350°C. The agglomeration temperature decreases with decreasing film thickness and linewidth. Once the film is agglomerated, the formation of NiSi2 is delayed to higher temperature by its low nucleation site density and decreased contact area. We conclude that agglomeration is the primary failure mechanism limiting the morphological stability of NiSi as a contact material to Si devices.

Annealing of dilute binary Cu(Ti), Cu(In), Cu(Al), Cu(Sn), Cu(Mg), Cu(Nb), Cu(B), Cu(Co) and Cu(Ag) alloy films resulted in the strongest <111> fiber texture for Cu(Ti) and the lowest resistivity for Cu(Ag). The behavior of the alloy films was compared and contrasted with that for a pure evaporated Cu film. Electron beam evaporated films with compositions in the range of 2.0-4.2 at% and thicknesses in the range of 420-560 nm were annealed at 400°C for 5 hours. Two different approaches were used to derive volume fractions of texture components, namely fiber plots and orientation distributions. It is argued that for polytextured films such as the copper alloys studied here, orientation distributions derived from pole figures provide the most reliable basis for quantitative characterization.

We examine how the substrate temperature during Ti film sputter deposition influences the subsequent texture formation in TiSi2 thin films. Titanium films of 32 nm thickness were sputtered onto Si(001) at elevated substrate temperatures varying between 100 °C and 900 °C. After the depositions, in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed to study the thin film reactions in real time, as the samples were annealed. The XRD results show that the substrate temperature significantly influences the texture of the initial Ti film as well as the texture of the resulting C54-phase TiSi2. The preferred Ti orientation gradually changes from (002) to (101) fiber texture as the deposition temperature increases up to 500 °C. Films deposited at 600 °C transformed into the C49 phase during deposition while films deposited at 700 °C and higher temperatures transformed into the C54 phase during deposition. The series of deposited films was annealed up to 1000 °C in He to complete the C54 phase formation while monitoring the texture evolution in situ using a position sensitive x-ray detector. The XRD results show that the final C54 phase texture changes from a dominant (311) orientation normal to the substrate to a (010) orientation for substrate temperatures between 600 °C and 700 °C. The C49-C54 phase transformation temperature is also lowered for these deposition temperatures. Ex situ pole figure analysis of the film deposited at 700 °C confirms the dominant C54 (010) texture and shows an in-plane orientation with C54 [001] ∥ Si [110]. For substrate temperatures between 800 °C and 900 °C, the C54 texture changes dramatically. In this case, θ - 2 θ scans do not show a preferred C54 orientation, but pole figure analysis indicates weak inplane orientations.
