We present the Pilot Survey Phase 2 data release for the Wide-field ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY), carried-out using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). We present 1760 H i detections (with a default spatial resolution of 30′′) from three pilot fields including the NGC 5044 and NGC 4808 groups as well as the Vela field, covering a total of $\sim 180$ deg$^2$ of the sky and spanning a redshift up to $z \simeq 0.09$. This release also includes kinematic models for over 126 spatially resolved galaxies. The observed median rms noise in the image cubes is 1.7 mJy per 30′′ beam and 18.5 kHz channel. This corresponds to a 5$\sigma$ H i column density sensitivity of $\sim 9.1\times10^{19}(1 + z)^4$ cm$^{-2}$ per 30′′ beam and $\sim 20$ km s$^{-1}$ channel and a 5$\sigma$ H i mass sensitivity of $\sim 5.5\times10^8 (D/100$ Mpc)$^{2}$ M$_{\odot}$ for point sources. Furthermore, we also present for the first time 12′′ high-resolution images (“cut-outs”) and catalogues for a sub-sample of 80 sources from the Pilot Survey Phase 2 fields. While we are able to recover sources with lower signal-to-noise ratio compared to sources in the Public Data Release 1, we do note that some data quality issues still persist, notably, flux discrepancies that are linked to the impact of side lobes associated with the dirty beams due to inadequate deconvolution. However, in spite of these limitations, the WALLABY Pilot Survey Phase 2 has already produced roughly a third of the number of HIPASS sources, making this the largest spatially resolved H i sample from a single survey to date.

We investigate the diversity in the sizes and average surface densities of the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) gas discs in $\sim$280 nearby galaxies detected by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). We combine the uniformly observed, interferometric H i data from pilot observations of the Hydra cluster and NGC 4636 group fields with photometry measured from ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared imaging surveys to investigate the interplay between stellar structure, star formation, and H i structural parameters. We quantify the H i structure by the size of the H i relative to the optical disc and the average H i surface density measured using effective and isodensity radii. For galaxies resolved by $>$$1.3$ beams, we find that galaxies with higher stellar masses and stellar surface densities tend to have less extended H i discs and lower H i surface densities: the isodensity H i structural parameters show a weak negative dependence on stellar mass and stellar mass surface density. These trends strengthen when we limit our sample to galaxies resolved by $>$2 beams. We find that galaxies with higher H i surface densities and more extended H i discs tend to be more star forming: the isodensity H i structural parameters have stronger correlations with star formation. Normalising the H i disc size by the optical effective radius (instead of the isophotal radius) produces positive correlations with stellar masses and stellar surface densities and removes the correlations with star formation. This is due to the effective and isodensity H i radii increasing with mass at similar rates while, in the optical, the effective radius increases slower than the isophotal radius. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous studies and demonstrate that with WALLABY we can begin to bridge the gap between small galaxy samples with high spatial resolution H i data and large, statistical studies using spatially unresolved, single-dish data.

We present the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) Pilot Phase I Hi kinematic models. This first data release consists of Hi observations of three fields in the direction of the Hydra and Norma clusters, and the NGC 4636 galaxy group. In this paper, we describe how we generate and publicly release flat-disk tilted-ring kinematic models for 109/592 unique Hi detections in these fields. The modelling method adopted here—which we call the WALLABY Kinematic Analysis Proto-Pipeline (WKAPP) and for which the corresponding scripts are also publicly available—consists of combining results from the homogeneous application of the FAT and 3DBarolo algorithms to the subset of 209 detections with sufficient resolution and $S/N$ in order to generate optimised model parameters and uncertainties. The 109 models presented here tend to be gas rich detections resolved by at least 3–4 synthesised beams across their major axes, but there is no obvious environmental bias in the modelling. The data release described here is the first step towards the derivation of similar products for thousands of spatially resolved WALLABY detections via a dedicated kinematic pipeline. Such a large publicly available and homogeneously analysed dataset will be a powerful legacy product that that will enable a wide range of scientific studies.

We present WALLABY pilot data release 1, the first public release of H i pilot survey data from the Wide-field ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. Phase 1 of the WALLABY pilot survey targeted three $60\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ regions on the sky in the direction of the Hydra and Norma galaxy clusters and the NGC 4636 galaxy group, covering the redshift range of $z \lesssim 0.08$ . The source catalogue, images and spectra of nearly 600 extragalactic H i detections and kinematic models for 109 spatially resolved galaxies are available. As the pilot survey targeted regions containing nearby group and cluster environments, the median redshift of the sample of $z \approx 0.014$ is relatively low compared to the full WALLABY survey. The median galaxy H i mass is $2.3 \times 10^{9}\,{\rm M}_{{\odot}}$ . The target noise level of $1.6\,\mathrm{mJy}$ per 30′′ beam and $18.5\,\mathrm{kHz}$ channel translates into a $5 \sigma$ H i mass sensitivity for point sources of about $5.2 \times 10^{8} \, (D_{\rm L} / \mathrm{100\,Mpc})^{2} \, {\rm M}_{{\odot}}$ across 50 spectral channels ( ${\approx} 200\,\mathrm{km \, s}^{-1}$ ) and a $5 \sigma$ H i column density sensitivity of about $8.6 \times 10^{19} \, (1 + z)^{4}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ across 5 channels ( ${\approx} 20\,\mathrm{km \, s}^{-1}$ ) for emission filling the 30′′ beam. As expected for a pilot survey, several technical issues and artefacts are still affecting the data quality. Most notably, there are systematic flux errors of up to several 10% caused by uncertainties about the exact size and shape of each of the primary beams as well as the presence of sidelobes due to the finite deconvolution threshold. In addition, artefacts such as residual continuum emission and bandpass ripples have affected some of the data. The pilot survey has been highly successful in uncovering such technical problems, most of which are expected to be addressed and rectified before the start of the full WALLABY survey.

Upcoming HI surveys will deliver such large datasets that automated processing using the full 3-D information to find and characterize HI objects is unavoidable. Full 3-D visualization is an essential tool for enabling qualitative and quantitative inspection and analysis of the 3-D data, which is often complex in nature. Here we present SlicerAstro, an open-source extension of 3DSlicer, a multi-platform open source software package for visualization and medical image processing, which we developed for the inspection and analysis of HI spectral line data. We describe its initial capabilities, including 3-D filtering, 3-D selection and comparative modelling.

Voids represent a unique environment for the study of galaxy evolution, as the lower density environment is expected to result in shorter merger histories and slower evolution of galaxies. This provides an ideal opportunity to test theories of galaxy formation and evolution. Imaging of the neutral hydrogen, central in both driving and regulating star formation, directly traces the gas reservoir and can reveal interactions and signs of cold gas accretion. For a new Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), we have carefully selected a sample of 59 galaxies that reside in the deepest underdensities of geometrically identified voids within the SDSS at distances of ∼100 Mpc, and pursued deep UV, optical, Hα, IR, and HI imaging to study in detail the morphology and kinematics of both the stellar and gaseous components. This sample allows us to not only examine the global statistical properties of void galaxies, but also to explore the details of the dynamical properties. We present an overview of the VGS, and highlight key results on the HI content and individually interesting systems. In general, we find that the void galaxies are gas rich, low luminosity, blue disk galaxies, with optical and HI properties that are not unusual for their luminosity and morphology. We see evidence of both ongoing assembly, through the gas dynamics between interacting systems, and significant gas accretion, seen in extended gas disks and kinematic misalignments. The VGS establishes a local reference sample to be used in future HI surveys (CHILES, DINGO, LADUMA) that will directly observe the HI evolution of void galaxies over cosmic time.

Recent observations have revealed a class of unusually HI-rich early-type galaxies. By combining observations of their morphology, stellar populations and neutral hydrogen we aim to understand how these galaxies fit into the hierarchical formation paradigm. Here we present the result of our radio and optical observations of a test case galaxy, the E/S0 IC 4200.

We calculate in detail the expected properties of low redshift DLAs under the assumption that they arise in the gaseous disks of galaxies like those in the $z\approx 0$ population. A sample of 355 nearby galaxies were analysed, for which high quality H I 21-cm emission line maps are available as part of an extensive survey with the Westerbork telescope (WHISP). We find that expected luminosities, impact parameters between quasars and DLA host galaxies, and metal abundances are in good agreement with the observed properties of DLAs and DLA galaxies. The measured redshift number density of $z=0$ gas above the DLA limit is $dN/dz=0.045\pm 0.006$, which compared to higher $z$ measurements implies that there is no evolution in the co-moving density of DLAs along a line of sight between $z\sim 1.5$ and $z=0$, and a decrease of only a factor of two from $z\sim 4$ to the present time. We conclude that the local galaxy population can explain all properties of low redshift DLAs.

Recent observations of the several phases of the interstellar medium in galaxies reveal a wide range of structures and physical properties. The HI structure in nearby galaxies is very filamentary with a large number of shells and filaments suggestive of a close interaction between the star formation in the disk and the surrounding interstellar medium.

The HI surface density of 8 low surface brightness galaxies falls below the critical density for star formation. This may explain why these galaxies appear so unevolved and are generally deficient in molecular gas.

The binary galaxies NGC 4038/39 have extended filamentary arms generated by tidal interactions (Toomre and Toomre, Ap. J. 178; 623, (1972)(TT)). The velocity field was determined by HI observations taken with the VLA (a facility operated by the NRAO under contract with the NSF), and the combined velocity and morphological information was used to constrain the allowed orbital parameters, halo characteristics, and dynamical friction. TT-type calculations were carried out with central masses and rings of test particles, and the calculated results compared with the data. Using disk orientations derived from optical data (Rubin et al., (1970) Ap. J. 160 81), and solving for the six remaining orbital parameters, central potential softening constant (representing the halo), and frictional relaxation time, a good fit between the model and the radio data was found. The best model is shown in Figure 1, and is superimposed on an HI column density map in Figure 2. The orbit is well-determined, and must be nearly parabolic; the pair are interacting for the first time, and if the galaxies have extensive massive halos much larger than their discs, then their tidal arms would be shorter and stubbier than observed. More limited halos are allowed; each galaxy could have up to 80% of its total mass in a halo, but the halos cannot be much larger than the discs. A halo several times larger than the disc, with 10 to 20 times the disc mass, is not permitted by the data.

Three supernovae have so far been detected in the radio range shortly after their optical outbursts. All are Type IIs. A fourth supernova, a Type I, is being monitored for radio emission but, at an age of approximately one year, has not yet been detected. For two of the supernovae, extensive data are presented on their “light curves” and spectra and models which have been suggested in the literature are discussed.

In this paper we present preliminary results from 21-cm line observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) of the southern barred spiral galaxies NGC 1365 and NGC 1097. Despite a wealth of theoretical models describing the gas flow in a non-axisymmetric bar potential (see Prendergast this volume), few observations of the HI distribution and motions in barred spiral galaxies exist. A notable exception is NGC 5383 (Sancisi et al. 1979). The observations we performed with the VLA are described below. The velocity resolution is 25 km sec−1. The angular resolution is 28″x20″, p.a. 20° for NGC 1365 and 30″x25″, p.a. 20° for NGC 1097. Velocities are heliocentric.

Gravitational interaction is a straightforward interpretation of some of the peculiar optical morphologies shown by galaxies. There have also been attempts to study the effects of a gravitational interaction on the radio continuum emission. Statistically, the central radio sources (inner 1 kpc) in interacting spiral galaxies are about three times stronger than in isolated spirals; on the other hand, the intensity of the extended emission does not seem to be affected (Stocke, 1978; Hummel, 1981). Peculiar radio morphologies are not a general property of interacting galaxies, since in the complete sample studied by Hummel (1981) of spirals with a probability ≥0.8 of being physically related to their companion, less than 5% have a peculiar radio morphology.

Observations of NGC 1275 at ∼ 1396 MHz with the NRAO line interferometer in 1974 and 1976 suggest the presence of a very broad, shallow HI absorption feature centered at ∼ 5300 km sec−1. These observations were repeated in 1981 June with the Very Large Array using a greater bandwidth to determine a satisfactory baseline.

The supernovae SN1979c in NGC 4321 and SN1980k in NGC 6946 have both been detected at centimeter wavelengths at the VLA. The radio emission turns on very rapidly, but may be delayed by as much as a year with respect to the optical outburst. In both supernovae, the 20 cm radiation peaks after the 6 cm, and the radio emission has a very slow post-maximum decay.

VLA observations at 1465 MHz of the Stephan's Quintet region reveal that the arc-shaped area of emission discussed by Allen and Hartsuiker (1972) breaks up into several components. The idea that NGC 7318b is a recent interloper in the group and that the interaction resulting from this event causes the enhanced activity at the east side of NGC 7318b is adopted as still the most reasonable explanation. The results are discussed in more detail in another paper (van der Hulst and Rots, 1981).

During the last few years detailed and sensitive observations of the radio emission from the nuclei of many normal spiral galaxies has become available. Observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO1), in particular, enable us to distinguish details on a scale of ≤100 pc for galaxies at distances less than 21 Mpc. The best studied nucleus, however, still is the center of our own Galaxy (see Oort 1977 and references therein). Its radio structure is complex. It consists of an extended non-thermal component 200 × 70 pc in size, with embedded therein several giant HII regions and the central source Sgr A (˜9 pc in size). Sgr A itself consists of a thermal source, Sgr A West, located at the center of the Galaxy, and a weaker, non-thermal source, Sgr A East. Sgr A West moreover contains a weak, extremely compact (≤10 AU) source. The radio morphology of several other galactic nuclei is quite similar to that of the Galactic Center, as will be discussed in section 2. Recent reviews of the radio properties of the nuclei of normal galaxies have been given by Ekers (1978a,b) and De Bruyn (1978). The latter author, however, concentrates on galaxies with either active nuclei or an unusual radio morphology. In this paper I will describe recent results from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT, Hummel 1979), the NRAO 3-element interferometer (Carlson, 1977; Condon and Dressel 1978), and the VLA (Heckman et al., 1979; Van der Hulst et al., 1979). I will discuss the nuclear radio morphology in section 2, the luminosities in section 3, and the spectra in section 4. In section 5 I will briefly comment upon the possible implications for the physical processes in the nuclei that are responsible for the radio emission.
