Objective:
In January 2017, Washington, DC, hosted the 58th United States presidential inauguration. The DC Department of Health leveraged multiple health surveillance approaches, including syndromic surveillance (human and animal) and medical aid station–based patient tracking, to detect disease and injury associated with this mass gathering.
Methods:Patient data were collected from a regional syndromic surveillance system, medical aid stations, and an internet-based emergency department reporting system. Animal health data were collected from DC veterinary facilities.
Results:Of 174 703 chief complaints from human syndromic data, there were 6 inauguration-related alerts. Inauguration attendees who visited aid stations (n = 162) and emergency departments (n = 180) most commonly reported feeling faint/dizzy (n = 29; 17.9%) and pain/cramps (n = 34;18.9%). In animals, of 533 clinical signs reported, most were gastrointestinal (n = 237; 44.5%) and occurred in canines (n = 374; 70.2%). Ten animals that presented dead on arrival were investigated; no significant threats were identified.
Conclusion:Use of multiple surveillance systems allowed for near-real-time detection and monitoring of disease and injury syndromes in humans and domestic animals potentially associated with inaugural events and in local health care systems.

Summary
Love doth approach disguised, / Armèd in arguments
(Love's Labour's Lost, 5.2.83–4)Imagine Narcissus had found his reflection in an object that was animate rather than inanimate. Imagine him with the same ‘fixed staring eyes’, the same ‘wretched rage’, the same vanity, destructiveness and self-pity, yet finding himself in the eyes of another person instead of a pool of water. Imagine him then not as a mortal man but an immortal goddess. Do so, and you have the basic idea of Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis, a minor Ovidian epic that tells one love-story not found even in Ovid – a story of love itself in love with love itself.
The story of Narcissus is without doubt an important source text for this poem. Venus compares Adonis to Narcissus more than once for failing to respond to her sexual advances. Many critics accept her judgement of the boy as narcissistic. Colin Burrow calls Adonis one of Shakespeare's ‘great’ narcissists. Coppélia Kahn calls the poem a ‘dramatization of narcissism’, in which the boy's attempt to ‘protect himself against the threat of love actually results in his self-destruction’. Jonathan Bate speaks of Adonis's ‘self-consuming absorption’, while Kenneth Muir finds in his death a kind of moral – that ‘beauty which refuses love is doomed to destruction and decay’. Other critics accept his narcissism with some qualification. Heather Dubrow, for example, sees Venus herself as ‘self-centered’ in a number of ways, yet for the most part agrees to the validity of the goddess’s charge, suspecting ‘subterranean motives’ of the boy for his resistance. Anthony Mortimer similarly thinks that Adonis will know no ‘other’, but appreciates certain reasons why he might not want to know Venus in particular.

Introduction:
Western media coverage of the violence associated with the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq has contrasted in magnitude and nature with population-based survey reports.
Objectives:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent to which first-hand reports of violent deaths were captured in the English language media by conducting in-depth interviews with Iraqi citizens.
Methods:The England-based Iraq Body Count (IBC) has methodically monitored media reports and recorded each violent death in Iraq that could be confirmed by two English language media sources. Using the capturerecapture method, 25 Masters' Degree students were assigned to interview residents in Iraq and asked them to describe 10 violent deaths that occurred closest to their home since the 2003 invasion. Students then matched these reports with those documented in IBC. These reports were matched both individually and crosschecked in groups to obtain a percentage of those deaths captured in the English language media.
Results:Eighteen out of 25 students successfully interviewed someone in Iraq. Six contacted individuals by telephone, while the others conducted interviews via e-mail. One out of seven (14%) phone contacts refused to participate. Seventeen out of 18 primary interviewees resided in Baghdad, however, some interviewees reported deaths of neighbors that occurred while the neighbors were elsewhere. The Baghdad residents reported 161 deaths in total, 39 of which (24%) were believed to be reported in the press as summarized by IBC. An additional 13 deaths (8%) might have been in the database, and 61 (38%) were absolutely not in the database.
Conclusions:The vast majority of violent deaths (estimated from the results of this study as being between 68–76%) are not reported by the press. Efforts to monitor events by press coverage or reports of tallies similar to those reported in the press, should be evaluated with the suspicion applied to any passive surveillance network: that it may be incomplete. Even in the most heavily reported conflicts, the media may miss the majority of violent events.

The diversity of the family Trichocomaceae, which includes the major anamorph genera Aspergillus and Penicillium, was studied in the Katandra Nature Reserve, Central Coast, NSW, Australia. Soil, living leaves, leaf litter and detritus were examined by both direct and dilution plating techniques. Fungi were isolated on dichloran Rose Bengal chloramphenicol agar, and dichloran 18% glycerol agar, media suitable for cultivation of many species within this family. Species of Trichocomaceae were isolated from all sites and all substrates examined. A high diversity was found, with more than 50 known species identified, and an equal number of undescribed species detected. More species of Penicillium were recovered than other genera, with Aspergillus species the next most common. Most of the species recovered were anamorphs, though 16 known and unknown ascosporic species were also isolated from heated and unheated soil. Soils, leaf litter, a scat from a native herbivore and leaves of living native plants yielded higher diversity than insects, worms or introduced plants. More species belonging to the family were isolated from soil in dry sclerophyll forest than in rainforest. Conversely, native rainforest plants harboured more diversity than the dry sclerophyll forest plants examined.

Radiocarbon laboratories undertake rigorous programmes of internal quality control (QC) and overall quality assurance (QA). In a laboratory “inter-comparison” samples of the same age are dated at different laboratories using a range of techniques and the results are then compared. The authors summarise the results of the fourth of these scientific audits.
