Performing Early Modern Drama Today

  • While much attention has been devoted to performances of Shakespeare's plays today, little has been focused on modern productions of the plays of his contemporaries, such as Marlowe, Webster and Jonson. Performing Early Modern Drama Today offers an overview of early modern performance, featuring chapters by academics, teachers and practitioners, incorporating a variety of approaches. The book examines modern performances in both Britain and America and includes interviews with influential directors, close analysis of particular stage and screen adaptations and detailed appendices of professional and amateur productions. Chapters examine intellectual and practical opportunities to analyse what is at stake when the plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries are performed by ours. Whether experimenting with original performance practices or contemporary theatrical and cinematic ones, productions of early modern drama offer an inspiring, sometimes unusual, always interesting perspective on the plays they interpret for modern audiences.

  • Durability of a Cementitious Wasteform for Intermediate Level Waste

  • Cementitious material is the most commonly used encapsulation medium for low and intermediate level radioactive waste. This paper focuses on the aqueous durability of a Materials Testing Reactor (MTR) cementitious wasteform – a possible candidate for the proposed intermediate level waste management facility in Australia. A series of medium term (up to 92 months) durability tests, without leachate replacement, were conducted on samples of this wasteform.

    The wasteform was made from cement, ground granulated blast furnace slag and a simulated waste liquor. The compressive strength (39 MPa) was typical of MTR cement wasteforms and well above that required for handling or storage. The wasteform was an inhomogeneous mixture containing calcite, a calcium silicate hydrate phase, hydrotalcite and unreacted slag particles. After leaching for 92 months the crystallinity of the calcium silicate hydrate phase increased.

    The majority of the releases of Ca, Si, Al, Sr, S, Na and K was reached within 4 days of leaching, with the maxima ie. the highest concentrations in the leachates, occurring at 3 months for Ca, Al, Sr, S, Na and K, and at 1 month for Si. For the longer leach periods (6 months and 3 months respectively) there was a slight reduction in concentration in the leachates, and these levels were similar to those for the longest period of 92 months, suggesting steady-state conditions prevailing after 3 to 6 months of leaching. The highest releases of matrix elements were for Na (37%), K (40%) and S (16%). Releases for elements such as Ca, Na, Al and Sr were similar in magnitude to those reported by the UKAEA in earlier MTR studies.

    After leaching for 92 months there was an alteration layer about 80 ∞m deep where calcium has been depleted. Na, K and Sr showed signs of diffusion towards the outer part of the cement samples.

    Shakespeare's role in the formation of English national identity has already been well established by historians of Shakespeare reception, who have demonstrated that Shakespeare became recognized as England's ‘national poet’ in the eighteenth century, while under the Romantics this flourishing appreciation was magnified into that heightened reverence that George Bernard Shaw would later dub ‘Bardolatry’. What has been generally overlooked, however, is the means by which this growing sense of Shakespeare's centrality and importance was transmitted in the nineteenth century beyond the purview of gentlemen, scholars and poets to members of society who might never choose to read poetry or literary criticism. As one component in a generalized popularization of Shakespeare during the Victorian era, the Victorian children's periodicals constitute a significant but unappreciated mechanism contributing to the rise of a popular Shakespeare. In return, Shakespeare as he was depicted in these periodicals helped to shape a nascent sense of national identity among England's youth, embracing adventure, exploration and conquest for boys, self-sacrificing daughterhood – and eventually motherhood – for girls.

    The politicized nature of children's Shakespeare in the Victorian era is not solely a product of the periodicals, but because children's periodicals are largely a Victorian phenomenon, and especially because they reached a wider segment of Victorian society who would not have purchased the often lavishly illustrated, expensive books on the same subject, these periodicals merit investigation.
