Microcontact printing is a straightforward and effective method for generating surface patterns of micron or submicron lateral dimensions. The fidelity of the ultimate pattern is a complex interplay of mechanical behavior of the elastomeric stamp, fluid transfer between surfaces and the ability of the ink to self-assemble on the new surface. We present here experimental observations and modeling of stamp deformation during precise external loads and visualization of inked surfaces by high contrast analytical methods. Stamp behavior was observed visually in an inverted microscope and load-displacement relationships used to determine onset of failure modes such as roof collapse and buckling of slender relief features as a function of stamp geometry. The load was applied with a glass sphere so as to obviate problems with alignment and to precisely determine contact areas.
A “robotic stamper” fabricated from an AFM instrument can deliver ink under conditions of precise load. Surfaces inked with varying densities or combinations of SAMs can be imaged with excellent contrast by scanning surface potential microscopy (SSPM). The same area of the sample can then be examined using time-of-flight SIMS or other surface analytical technique with no additional etching or sample preparation. In this way the fidelity and density of the patterned monolayers can be evaluated. The effect of load on ink pattern quality can also be established.

Surface potentials of a number of patterned conducting and insulating self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were measured by scanning surface potential microscopy (SSPM) as part of a study in molecular electronics. Differences in surface potential were measured for insulating and conducting molecule SAMs on gold. The SAMs were patterned by microcontact printing. High contrast patterns were observed by surface potential even when little imaging was possible in standard AFM modes. Surface potential differences of a few mV to 500 mV were observed under ambient conditions between adjacent SAMs of different compositions or between SAMs and the unmodified substrate.

Stamp deformation often produces undesirable effects that limit the practice and precision of micro-contact printing. We have experimentally studied one of the most pervasive consequences of undesired deformation: roof collapse of low-aspect-ratio recesses. Stamp behavior under increasing loads can readily be assessed by mounting stamps on flat glass and viewing stamps from below through an inverted microscope. Dynamic as well as limiting equilibrium behavior can be determined. Features with aspect ratios varying by a factor of ten were examined. We find that roof collapse initiates with the formation of a contact between the roof of the stamp and the substrate. This is followed by rapid growth of the contact region, driven by attractive interfacial forces. Contact growth usually terminates leaving a noncontacting “moat” region. Experimental measurements of the critical stress for roof collapse are in very good agreement with theory.

A new family of simple precursors to silica gel has been developed. The gel precursors are tetra(polyfluoroalkoxy)silanes, the prototype being Si(OCH2CF3)4. Formation of transparent monolithic gels with no added catalyst can be six orders of magnitude faster than comparable reactions of Si(OCH2CH3)4[TEOS]. Extremely low density gels can be generated in minutes at concentrations at which TEOS does not gel at all. Pore sizes in the wet gels were estimated from hydrodynamic relaxation in a beam-bending experiment on cylindrical logs. In a gel at 1% solids, the pore size was approximately 100 nm. Monolithic gels can be created at concentrations at least as low as 0.1% solids and have higher moduli than predicted. NMR and GC/IR evidence indicates extremely facile hydrolysis and condensation pathways and very few silanol or cyclic intermediates in the sol. The chemistry can also be conducted in perfluorinated solvents, enabling synthesis of silica/fluoropolymer nanocomposites.

A new family of hybrid inorganic/organic network materials – the star gels – has been synthesized from single component molecular precursors. The starting materials comprise an organic core with multiple flexible arms which terminate in network-forming trialkoxysilane groups. The core can be a single silicon atom, linear disiloxane segment or ring system. With at least 12 alkoxysilane groups per molecule, gelation rates in aqueous or formic acid media can be extremely high, but can be attenuated several orders of magnitude by choice of solvent system. The degree of intramolecular condensation of these molecules has been assessed via mass spectrometric techniques. Transparent glasses which show brittle fracture but high levels of toughness have been generated from this family of precursors. The materials do not show plastic deformation even under compressive stress of 350 MPa. No evidence for open porosity in the glasses has been obtained. The organic content of the networks can be increased by lengthening the arms; the inorganic content can be increased via co-hydrolysis with simple tetraalkoxysilanes such as TEOS. Species with longer arms lead to glasses with higher coefficients of thermal expansion.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/silicate interpenetrating networks (IPNs) have been synthesized in formic acid solutions. The fast gelation times observed in these solutions reduced the phase separation of the polymer, and the 50% by weight PMMA/silicate hybrid showed virtually no evidence of a glass transition (Tg) from thermomechanical data. 2H NMR showed that the PMMA is extremely mobile in the wet gels, and liquid-like 2H NMR spectra are observed even after prolonged aging of the samples. A 2H static NMR lineshape, indicative of the rigid polymer, does not occur until polymer to solvent ratios of approximately 0.2 (weight basis) are attained. Motional narrowing of the 2H resonances is not observed in the vacuum-dried IPNs below 180 °C. In contrast, pure PMMA shows motional narrowing between 150 and 180 °C. There was little evidence of isotropic motion of the polymer chains, for low polymer concentrations, up to the highest temperature studied (200 °C). The percentage of polymer undergoing isotropic motion increased with polymer content, and as a function of the aging time before solvent stripping.
