Controlled irrigation during the dry period associated with adequate nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) fertilization led to the accumulation of biochemical compounds in coffee beans considered as positive precursors of beverage quality. Adult plants of coffee (Coffea arabica ‘Rubi’) were cultivated using different water regimes (WR) and fertilization conditions under the dry climate of the Brazilian Cerrado. Coffee-bean physical characteristics were evaluated as well as biochemical composition by near-infrared analysis. The K treatment mostly affected bean biochemistry, lipid and chlorogenic acid (CGA) contents, which increased with increasing amounts of fertilizer. Caffeine contents increased with higher amounts of N, but no significant effects of P treatment on bean biochemical composition were observed. Sucrose and total lipid contents always appeared higher in beans of non-irrigated plants than those beans from plants grown with continuous irrigation. In contrast, caffeine and CGA contents were higher in beans of irrigated as compared with non-irrigated plants. For the first time, the current results showed that controlled management of irrigation during the dry period associated with reasonable NPK fertilization led to the accumulation of biochemical compounds in coffee beans considered as positive precursors of beverage quality.

Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) describes the physical behavior of inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The goal of this paper is to provide a physical understanding of a process ICP torch using a resistive MHD model. This includes a basic description and derivation of the fluid model. Inductive plasma is treated as a continuous, conducting fluid that satisfies the classical laws of motion and thermodynamics. This model combines fluid equations, similar to those used in fluid dynamics, with Maxwell’s equations. Steady fluid flow and temperature equations are simultaneously solved (direct method) using a finite elements method (FEM). The electromagnetic field equations are formulated in terms of potential vector with applied voltage source, so this model is physically more consistent, a more accurate and a faster simulation. The governing resistive MHD equations for an inductive plasma flow under local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and laminar flow are presented, with appropriate boundary conditions. The model enabled to obtain the electromagnetic fields, temperature and flow velocity distributions also allows the determination of the electric parameters such as impedance of the plasma torch, total power, eddy losses, etc.

The East Flanders Prospective Twin Survey (EFPTS) is a prospective, population-based registry of multiple births in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. EFPTS has several unique features: it is population based and prospective, with the possibility of long-term follow-up; the twins (and higher order multiple births) are ascertained at birth; basic perinatal data recorded; chorion type and zygosity established; and since 1969 placental biopsies have been taken and frozen at −20 °C for later determination of genetic markers. The EFPTS is the only large register that includes placental data and allows differentiation of 3 subtypes of monozygotic (MZ) twins based on the time of the initial zygotic division: the dichorionic–diamnionic pairs (early, before the 4th day after fertilization), the monochorionic–diamnionic pairs (intermediate, between the 4th and the 7th day post fertilization), and the monochorionic–monoamnionic pairs (late, after the 8-day post fertilization). This added a new dimension to didymology (the science of twins; didymos is the Greek word for twin): the timing of MZ twinning. Studies can be initiated taking into account primary biases, those originating in utero. Such studies could throw new light on the controversy over the validity of the classic twin method, the consequences of early embryological events (before and just after implantation of the embryo), the origin of congenital malformations, the sex proportion of multiples, the gene–environment interactions as far as intrauterine environment is concerned, to name but a few.

A hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate the flow and the heat transfer with the gas/plasma system produced by a microwave-driven (500–900 W at 2.45 GHz) axial injection torch, running in atmospheric pressure helium at 3–9 L min−1 input gas flows. The model solves the Navier-Stokes’ equations, including the effect of the plasma upon the momentum and the energy balance, in order to obtain the spatial distributions of the gas velocity and temperature. The model predicts average gas temperatures of 2500–3500 K, in the same range of those obtained by optical measurements. Simulations show that the plasma influences the gas flow path and temperature, promoting an efficient power transfer.

A two-dimensional numerical code, previously developed for the modelling of a-Si:H deposition in a SiH4/H2 radio frequency cylindrical PECVD reactor, has been modified in order to perform the modelling of CH4/H2 mixtures in the same experimental configuration. This model, which includes electrical and chemical modules, takes into account the transport and the chemistry of the charged and neutral species. The results of the models have been compared to measurements. The calculated electrical power coupled to the plasma and the self-bias voltages are compared to the experimental ones. The calculated radical densities are compared to those measured by threshold ionization mass spectroscopy at the substrate centre. Moreover, the calculated radial distribution of the deposition rate is compared to profilometry measurements. Eventually, results obtained here in CH4/H2 are compared with those previously obtained in SiH4/H2 plasmas under similar experimental conditions.

A new dual-plasma (surface wave-coupled microwave and capacitively-coupled radiofrequency) PECVD reactor for high growth rate of Amorphous insulating alloys is being developped. A high flexibility for thin film materials synthesis is expected, because the energy of the ion bombardment can be monitored independently from the microwave plasma chemistry. In situ diagnostics (Optical EMission Spectroscopy and Spectroscopie Ellipsometry) are used for the optimization of the dual-Mode plasma deposition of hydrogenated Amorphous silicon a-Si:H and silicon oxides a-SiOx:H (with 0 ≤ × ≤ 2). The growth of stoichiometric oxide at 3.3 nm / s has been achieved.
