Side effects from antipsychotic medications can have a profound effect on patients' lives and may adversely affect their willingness to comply with treatment. Identification of side effects through improved communication between psychiatrists, other members of the healthcare team, and their patients might increase treatment compliance. The Approaches to Schizophrenia Communication (ASC) Steering Group developed two simple, practical checklists for use in the busy clinical setting. The ASC–Self-Report (ASC-SR) checklist is completed by the patient and comprises a list of the more common or clinically important side effects of antipsychotic treatment. The ASC-Clinic (ASC-C) checklist is completed by both clinician and patient together, being used as the basis for a semi-structured interview. In a multicenter pilot study set up to evaluate the utility of checklists, 86% of patients responding considered the ASC-SR to be useful in communicating their problems to psychiatrists and other members of the healthcare team. All healthcare team respondents found both checklists to be helpful when discussing side effect problems with their patients. Moreover, 41% and 47% of healthcare team respondents reported that the ASC-SR and ASC-C, respectively, had assisted them in identifying side-effect problems not previously acknowledged. Preliminary evaluation of the ASC-SR and ASC-C in this multicenter pilot study suggests that both tools were user-friendly, encouraged communication between patients and healthcare professionals about antipsychotic drug side effects, and could readily integrated into everyday clinical practice.

Aims and method
A group of lawyers, psychiatrists, best interest assessors and independent mental capacity advocates were asked to make binary judgements about whether real-life situations in 12 vignettes amounted to deprivation of liberty. Kappa coefficients were calculated to describe the level of agreement within each professional group and for the total group of professionals.
ResultsThere was total agreement between all professionals about deprivation of liberty in only 1 of the 12 cases. The overall level of agreement for judgements made by all professionals was ‘slight’ (κ=0.16, P < 0.01).
Clinical implicationsThere are practical difficulties involved in making reliable deprivation of liberty judgements within the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) legislation. A clear interpretation of deprivation of liberty is necessary to facilitate professionals' decision-making in this area.

Based on geological and stylistic evidence, we argue that stone palettes found at Etowah were made locally from nearby raw materials. We also show that they were wrapped in textiles and kept in bundles, i.e., that they were objects used in ritual. Etowah palettes were used as portable altars, perhaps in ceremonies that involved anointing other objects with colorful (and spiritually powerful) substances. The realization that palettes were bundled ritual gear should cause us to rethink common assumptions that such objects moved from site to site by means of "trade," or that they functioned as "prestige goods" in the sense of Frankenstein and Rowlands (1978).

In the midst of an outbreak, carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii was grown from samples of multiple environmental sites in an intensive care unit. A commercial oxidizing disinfectant (potassium peroxomonosulphate 50%, sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate 15%, and sulphamic acid 5%) was introduced throughout the intensive care unit, and its use coincided with cessation of the outbreak.

Soft polymer networks with large mesh size, not flat rigid surfaces, are the normal environment for most animal cells. Cell structure and function depend on the stiffness of the surfaces on which cells adhere as well as on the type of adhesion complex by which the cell binds its extracellular ligand. Many cell types, including fibroblasts and endothelial cells, switch from a round to spread morphology as stiffness is increased between 1000 and 10,000 Pa. Coincident with the change in morphology are a host of differences in protein phosphorylation levels, expression of integrins, and changes in cytoskeletal protein expression and assembly. In contrast, other cells types such as neutrophils and platelets do not require rigid substrates in order to spread, and neurons extend processes better on soft (50 Pa) materials than on stiffer gels. We compare the stiffness sensing of four cell types: platelets, neurons and astrocytes, a glial cell type derived from embryonic rat brain, and melanoma cells. Astrocytes switch from a round to spread morphology as substrate stiffness increases, but do so over a stiffness range 10 times softer than that over which fibroblasts alter morphology. Stiffness-dependent morphologic changes observed from studies of cells grown on surfaces of protein-laminated polyacrylamide gels that have linear elasticity are also seen when cells are on matrices of natural biopolymers such as fibrin. Biopolymer gels like fibrin can be formed with appropriate stiffness to optimize for neuronal cell survival and patterning, and may have utility for repair of damaged neural tissues. The complex non-linear rheology of fibrin and other gels formed by semi-flexible biopolymers that exhibit strain-stiffening provide additional mechanisms by which cells can respond to and actively remodel the mechanical features of their environment.
