We study the evolution of G2 in a Compact Source Scenario, where G2 is the outflow from a low-mass central star moving on the observed orbit. This is done through 3D AMR simulations of the hydrodynamic interaction of G2 with the surrounding hot accretion flow. A comparison with observations is done by means of mock position-velocity (PV) diagrams. We found that a massive (Ṁw = 5× 10−7M⊙ yr−1) and slow (vw = 50 km s−1) outflow can reproduce G2’s properties. A faster outflow (vw = 400 km s−1) might also be able to explain the material that seems to follow G2 on the same orbit.

With the help of 3D AMR hydrodynamical simulations we aim at understanding G2’s nature, recent evolution and fate in the coming years. By exploring the possible parameter space of the diffuse cloud scenario, we find that a starting point within the disc of young stars is favoured by the observations, which may hint at G2 being the result of stellar wind interactions.

In 2011, we discovered a compact gas cloud (“G2”) with roughly three Earth masses that is falling on a near-radial orbit toward the massive black hole in the Galactic center. The orbit is well constrained and pericenter passage is predicted for early 2014. Our data beautifully show that G2 gets tidally sheared apart due to the massive black hole's force. During the next months, we expect that in addition to the tidal effects, hydrodynamics get important, when G2 collides with the hot ambient gas around Sgr A*. Simulations show that ultimately, the cloud's material might fall into the massive black hole. Predictions for the accretion rate and luminosity evolution, however, are very difficult due to the many unknowns. Nevertheless, this might be a unique opportunity in the next years to observe how gas feeds a massive black hole in a galactic nucleus.

Recently the gas and dust cloud “G2” was discovered on a highly eccentric orbit around the massive black hole in the Galactic center. The orbit will bring the cloud as close as 2400 Schwarzschild radii to Sgr A* beginning of 2014. With the help of hydrodynamical simulations using the PLUTO code, we investigate possible origins and the fate of the cloud in the coming years. In this proceedings article, we concentrate on a scenario where G2 is interpreted as a diffuse gas cloud and show its detailed evolution in the observable position-velocity diagrams. We further elaborate on the problem of the tail emission which might or might not be related to the G2 cloud.

The origin of the dense gas cloud “G2” discovered in the Galactic center (Gillessen et al. 2012) is still a debated puzzle. G2 might be a diffuse cloud or the result of an outflow from an invisible star embedded in it. We present here detailed simulations of the evolution of winds on G2's orbit. We find that the hydrodynamic interaction with the hot atmosphere present in the Galactic center and the extreme gravitational field of the supermassive black hole must be taken into account when modeling such a source scenario. We also find that in this scenario most of the Brγ luminosity is expected to come from the highly filamentary densest shocked wind material. G2's observational properties can be used to constrain the properties of the outflow and our best model has a mass outflow rate of Ṁw=8.8 × 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 and a wind velocity of vw = 50 km s−1. These values are compatible with those of a young TTauri star wind, as already suggested by Scoville & Burkert (2013).

Here we present the fundamental properties of the nuclear cluster of the Milky Way. First, we derive its structural properties by constructing a density map of the central 1000″ using extinction-corrected star counts. We can describe the data with a two-component model built from Sersic profiles. The inner nearly spherical component is the nuclear cluster. The outer, strongly flattened component can be identified with the stellar component of the circumnuclear zone. Second, we enlarge the radius inside which detailed dynamics are available from 1 pc to 4 pc. We use more than 10000 individual proper motions and more than 2700 radial velocities. We determine the cluster mass by means of isotropic spherical Jeans modeling. We get a nuclear cluster mass within 100″ of M100″=(6.11 ± 0.52|fix R0±0.97|R0) × 106 M⊙, which corresponds to a total cluster mass of MNC=(13.08 ± 2.51|fix R0± 2.08|R0) × 106 M⊙. By combination of our mass with the flux we calculate M/L=0.50 ± 0.12 M⊙/L⊙,Ks for the central 100″. That is broadly consistent with a Chabrier IMF. With its mass and a luminosity of MKs=−15.30±0.26 the nuclear cluster is a bright and massive specimen with a typical size.

The Herschel Key Project SHINING performs a study of the ISM in star forming and activeinfrared bright galaxies (starbursts, AGN, (U)LIRGs, interacting and low metallicitygalaxies) at local and intermediate redshifts. Here we present some surprising andpromising first results from parts of this programme, including spatially resolved PDRdiagnostics, line deficit diagnostics, and large scale molecular outflows traced by the OHmolecule.

In a survey of 18 nearby Seyfert nuclei, we find evidence for geometrically thick gas disks on scales of tens of parsecs. Mapping the interstellar medium traced by H2 ν = 1–0 S(1) emission using the infrared integral field spectrometers OSIRIS and SINFONI reveals general disk rotation with an additional significant component of random bulk motion implied by the high local velocity dispersion. The size scale of the typical nuclear gas disk is ~30 pc in radius with a comparable vertical height, and the distribution and kinematics suggest the gas is spatially mixed with the nuclear stellar population. Based on the estimated characteristic gas mass fraction of 10%, the average gas mass within this region is ~107M⊙. This suggests column densities of NH ~ 5 × 1023 cm−2, but the significantly lower densities implied by the stellar continuum extinction indicate that the gas distribution on these scales is dominated by dense clumps. We discuss the feasibility of constraining the masses of the central black holes via modeling of the gas disk kinematics, highlighting the importance of properly accounting for the gas velocity dispersion, and the use of these direct mass estimates to calibrate masses derived from the method of reverberation mapping.

Our adaptive optics observations of nearby AGN at spatial resolutions as small as 0.″085 show strong evidence for recent, but no longer active, nuclear star formation. We begin by describing observations that highlight two contrasting methods by which gas can flow into the central tens of parsecs. Gas accumulation in this region will inevitably lead to a starburst, and we discuss the evidence for such events. We then turn to the impact of stellar evolution on the further inflow of gas by combining a phenomenological approach with analytical modelling and hydrodynamic simulations. These complementary perspectives paint a picture in which all the processes are ultimately regulated by the mass accretion rate into the central hundred parsecs, and the ensuing starburst that occurs there. The resulting supernovae delay accretion by generating a starburst wind, which leaves behind a clumpy interstellar medium. This provides an ideal environment for slower stellar outflows to accrete inwards and form a dense turbulent disk on scales of a few parsecs. Such a scenario may resolve the discrepancy between the larger scale structure seen with adaptive optics and the small-scale structure seen with VLTI.

We present results of two studies aiming at better understanding the properties of massive stars in the Galactic Center. We focus on the youngest and oldest of the three massive clusters harboring this region, namely the Arches and central cluster. We show that the development of powerful observational techniques in the near infrared spectral range (mainly 3D spectroscopy) allows to uncover the entire massive star population in these clusters. Using CMFGEN models, we derive the classical stellar and wind properties of 46 stars, as well as their surface abundances. The latter allow us to investigate in detail their evolutionary status and to identify evolutionary sequences between different types of stars. We thus constrain stellar evolution in the upper part of the HR diagram.

In 1992, we obtained the first observations of S2 a star close to the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. In 2002, S2 passed its periastron and in 2007, it completed a first fully observed revolution. This orbit allowed us to determine the mass of and the distance to the supermassive black hole with unprecedented accuracy. Here we present a re-analysis of the data set, enhancing the astrometric accuracy to 0.5 mas and increasing the number of well-determined stellar orbits to roughly 15. This allows to constrain the extended mass distribution around the massive black hole and will lead in the near future to the detection of post-Newtonian effects. We will also give an outlook on the potential of interferometric near-infrared astrometry with 10 microarcsecond accuracy from the VLTI.

We present the adaptive optics assisted, near-infrared VLTI instrument GRAVITY for precision narrow-angle astrometry and interferometric phase referenced imaging of faint objects. With its two fibers per telescope beam, its internal wavefront sensors and fringe tracker, and a novel metrology concept, GRAVITY will not only push the sensitivity far beyond what is offered today, but will also advance the astrometric accuracy for UTs to 10 μas. GRAVITY is designed to work with four telescopes, thus providing phase referenced imaging and astrometry for 6 baselines simultaneously. Its unique capabilities and sensitivity will open a new window for the observation of a wide range of objects, and — amongst others — will allow the study of motion within a few times the event horizon size of the Galactic Center black hole.

Using adaptive optics on Keck and the VLT in the H- and K-bands, we have begun a project to probe the dynamics and star formation around AGN on scales of 0.1″. The stellar content of the nucleus is traced through the 2.29 µm CO 2-0 and 1.62 µm CO 6-3 absorption bandheads. These features are directly spatially resolved, allowing us to measure the extent and distribution of the nuclear star forming region. The dynamics are traced through the 2.12 µm H2 1-0 S(1) and 1.64 µm [FeII] emission lines, as well as stellar absorption features. Matching disk models to the rotation curves at various position angles allows us to determine the mass of the stellar and gas components, and constrain the mass of the central black hole. Measurements of the proper motions and radial velocities of stars in the central cluster of the Milky Way have revealed the presence of a 2-3 million solar mass black hole at the position of the compact radio source Sagittarius A* (SgrA*). The overall stellar motions do not deviate strongly from isotropy and are consistent with a spherical isothermal stellar cluster. Speckle spectroscopy with SHARP at the NTT and slit spectroscopy with ISAAC at the VLT suggests that several of them are early type stars. This is consistent with the idea that these stars are members of an early type cluster with small angular momentum and therefore are now in the immediate vicinity of SgrA*. Most recent data now allows to measure the curvatures of the stellar orbits for a few of the stars that are closest to the center and have the largest proper motions of up to 1400 km/s. The curvatures indicate that the stars indeed orbit the central compact object and will allow to further determine its mass and compactness.

We are exploring the properties of obscured starburst galaxies, using observations of atomic fine structure lines taken with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer aboard ISO. However, it is important to ascertain how well our starburst models can recover the properties of the stellar populations in more distant starbursts. For this purpose, we use observations of a nebular “shell” in the 30 Doradus region, to show that our models reliably predict the presence of the very massive stars observed directly in the 30 Doradus region.

I describe a project to survey ∼ 13 square degrees of the sky at 15μm and 90μm with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) is a collaboration involving 19 European institutes (in addition to the authors and others at their institutes the following people and others their institutes are involved I. Gonzalez-Serrano, E. Kontizas, K. Mandolesi, J. Masegosa, K. Mattila, H. Norgaard-Nielsen, I. Perez-Fournon, M. Ward) and is the largest open time project being undertaken by ISO. We expect to detect at least 1000 extra-galactic objects and a similar number of Galactic sources.

High spatial resolution, near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the nuclear star cluster obtained in the last few years have given key new insights about the structure, evolution and mass distribution in the Milky Way Center. The central parsec is powered by a cluster of hot, massive stars. Their characteristics imply that there was an active phase of star formation a few million years ago, probably triggered by the infall and collapse of a very dense gas cloud. Other such starburst episodes may have taken place between 100 and 300 million years ago. Measurements of radial and proper motions for more than 200 stars show that stellar velocities increase with a Kepler law down to a scale of a light week from the compact radio source Sgr A∗. The data make a compelling case for the presence of a compact, central dark mass of about 2.6×106 M⊙. Simple physical considerations show that this dark mass cannot consist of a stable cluster of stars, stellar remnants or substellar condensations. Energy equipartition requires that at least five percent of the dark mass (≥105 M⊙) must be associated with Sgr A∗ itself and likely is enclosed within less than 8 light minutes. If one accepts these arguments it is hard to escape the conclusion that Sgr A∗ is indeed a massive black hole at the core of the Milky Way.

Observations in the 1 µm to 1 cm wavelength band give important information on the physical processes occurring in and immediately around active galactic nuclei. Concentrating on recent results on ionic, atomic, and molecular emission lines, we discuss as examples the first ISO results on the nature of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, and near-infrared and millimeter measurements of the central 100 parsecs of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068.

We discuss 2.5–45 µm spectra of the Circinus galaxy and of Cen A, obtained with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The large number of detected ionic fine structure lines, observable also in visually obscured sources, provides strong constraints on the shape of the ionizing spectrum, which is found to exhibit a UV bump peaking at ~ 70 eV in the case of Circinus. Pure rotational emission of molecular hydrogen, directly probing warm molecular gas, can for the first time be detected in external galaxies.

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is opening the 2.5 to 200 μm band for detailed infrared spectroscopy. Concentrating on ionic and molecular emission lines observed with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) we discuss ISO's first results on Galactic and extragalactic sources.
