Summary
Introduction
“There is no local here, love.” These were the evocative words said by an elderly participant at an arts-led research intervention at Patchway Community Centre at a monthly, volunteer-facilitated older person's tea party. Responding to arts-led research methods (in this instance, storytelling), the participant was evoking an absence of ‘the local’ in her locality. Pointing out the lack of cafes, pubs, amenable parks or community centres that did not have to cover their costs (“it costs money to be local”), she explained how ‘the local’ needs physical space in order to exist.
While we might bristle at the singularity of the description of ‘the local’, in our research, we found participants referring to ‘the local’ over and over again. In this sense, the local, the keystone concept in the current policy landscape of localism, was confirmed when interrogated through arts-based methods. In addition, however, participants also stated repeatedly that feeling local, or recognition of the local, is dependent upon whether or not there are spaces in which to get together to ‘be’ local. Specifically, this research found that the local can be both present and absent, even though the assumption with the Localism Act 2011 and related policy initiatives is that there are ‘locals’ all across England.
Certainly, research is consistently illustrating that localism is geographically, socially and politically uneven (Featherstone et al, 2012; Clarke and Cochrane, 2013; see also Chapter Three, this volume). This chapter, however, goes further to illustrate that the very existence of ‘the local’ is also uneven. Being local is not a private activity; it is one that is performed in spaces that are, to some extent, public. In English culture, the pub is the iconic ‘local’, but local shops, parks, cafes or community centres are also thought of as providing a space for people to get together and ‘be’ local. Without space in which to meet, there is no local. There is a very real connection between both the built environment and community: we cannot disaggregate the two (see Chapters Two and Three, this volume).
Investigating the local in this way was possible through using artsbased research methodologies, and this chapter explores the potential of these techniques and approaches.

Background:
Neurosurgical patients may be unaware of components of their intra-operative care. The relationship between patient gender and comfort level in the neurosurgical operating room (OR) has not been previously studied. Our objective was to gain insight into patients' perspective of the OR environment, including staffing and observers, the role of medical students, catheterization, exposure, and verbiage, using a qualitative needs assessment.
Methods:Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 patients (14 female, six male) who had a neurosurgical operation under general anesthetic within the previous two years. The majority underwent craniotomy for benign tumours. Interviews were transcribed and subjected to modified thematic analysis.
Results:Nine themes emerged: 1) perception of the intra-operative environment varies between men and women; 2) lacking awareness about observers is anxiety-provoking for women; 3) being unaware of the hands-on involvement of students is a concern for all patients; 4) disclosure of implantation of foreign and permanent materials into patients is important; 5) catheterization is anxiety provoking for women; 6) pre-operative menstruation screening may minimize embarrassment for women; 7) patients perceive extraneous conversation as a distraction for surgeons; 8) patients trust their surgeon; 9) a relationship exists between interviewer gender and patient comfort in the interview.
Conclusion:Although most male and female patients are unaware of OR activities, they are generally not fearful since they trust their surgeon. Women appear to have greater information needs. Patients' information needs must be met without provoking anxiety and yet preserving their personal sense of modesty in the intra-operative environment.

We present preliminary results of a detailed analysis of the $z=3.55$ Lyman limit system observed in the optical spectrum of Q2000-330. We have fitted Voigt profiles to the system to determine the column densities and Doppler parameters of its many components. For its major components we have also determined the ionisation fraction of the gas and obtained crude estimates of metallicities. We find order of magnitude variations in ionisation fraction and metallicity in components separated by as little as 150 km s$^{-1}$ in velocity space. This work is presented as an example of a campaign we have begun to collect such information on a sample of $\sim 100$ such systems in an effort to accurately characterise this enigmatic and important class of quasar absorption line systems.

We are developing a method for measuring the detailed chemical composition and evolutionary history of extragalactic star clusters from high resolution spectra of their integrated light as one would from spectra of individual stars. In this paper, we show high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectra of the integrated light of two Galactic globular clusters and equivalent-quality spectra of individual stars in those clusters in order to briefly illustrate some subtleties of the analysis method.
