The building of online atomic and molecular databases for astrophysics and for other research fields started with the beginning of the internet. These databases have encompassed different forms: databases of individual research groups exposing their own data, databases providing collected data from the refereed literature, databases providing evaluated compilations, databases providing repositories for individuals to deposit their data, and so on. They were, and are, the replacement for literature compilations with the goal of providing more complete and in particular easily accessible data services to the users communities. Such initiatives involve not only scientific work on the data, but also the characterization of data, which comes with the “standardization” of metadata and of the relations between metadata, as recently developed in different communities. This contribution aims at providing a representative overview of the atomic and molecular databases ecosystem, which is available to the astrophysical community and addresses different issues linked to the use and management of data and databases. Viral load dynamics in adult patients with A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza

The dynamics of influenza A viral load in respiratory samples collected from adult A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza patients were investigated. Three respiratory specimens were obtained every 2–4 days and clinical findings were recorded at the time each specimen was collected. A total of 105 serial specimens were collected from 35 patients. Viral clearance was more rapid in patients aged 15–29 years than patients aged 30–49 years (P < 0·01) or ⩾50 years (P < 0·01). Hospitalized patients showed slow viral clearance compared to outpatients (P < 0·01). Resolution of cough and headache was correlated with viral load reduction in respiratory specimens. Viral shedding was found in 17 patients (48·6%) 5 days after symptom onset. Time to hospital visit after symptom onset was significantly correlated with prolonged viral shedding (odds ratio 9·0, 95% confidence interval 1·56–51·87, P = 0·01). These findings will contribute to infection control aspects with respect to managing patients with influenza virus infections.

The incidence and severity of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) have increased in Western countries. However, there are limited data regarding the epidemiology of CDI in Eastern countries. This nationwide study was conducted in 17 hospitals to determine temporal trends in CDI incidence (from 2004 to 2008) in South Korea. The total incidence of CDI in Korea was 1·7 cases/1000 adult admissions in 2004, and 2·7/1000 cases in 2008 (P = 0·028). When analysing the clinical features of 1367 CDI patients diagnosed in 2008, oral metronidazole was effective as a first-line treatment for CDI (61·9%). Relapse rate was 8·9% and complicated CDI was only observed in 3·6%. The incidence of CDI increased significantly in Korea from 2004 to 2008. Although the clinical features were milder than in Western countries, the increasing burden of CDI needs ongoing surveillance systems.

Olivine (LiFePO4)-carbon nanofibre composites were synthesized through a combination of electrospinning and solvothermal methods. Morphology, distribution and crystal structure of these composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Electrochemical properties of synthesized LiFePO4-carbon fibre composite cathodes have been studied in litium ion coin cells by means of galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry. As compared to pristine LiFePO4, there was significant improvement in the specific capacity (˜25% at 0.1C rate) of LiFePO4 - ECNF owing to the improved conductivity.
Long-term follow-up of porcine male germ cells transplanted into mouse testes

This study investigated the effect of increased phylogenetic distance on the outcome of spermatogonial transplantation, with porcine donors and mice recipients. It was designed to develop a technique for detecting foreign donor cells in recipient animals. Porcine male germ cells were harvested from postnatal male testes and incubated with the lipophilic membrane dye PKH-26. For transplantation, approximately 106 PKH-26-labelled porcine male germ cells were injected into the efferent ducts of mouse testes. Animals were sacrificed at post-graft days 1, 10, 30, 45, 60 and 150 (n = 5 each). Serial frozen sections of explanted testes were prepared for detecting labelled cells. Transplanted porcine donor cells were easily detected in the recipient tubules for 8 weeks. After transplantation, we could detect both incorporation into the basement membrane and differentiation of grafted porcine donor cells by our double detection system, using PKH staining and slide PCR. However, our RT-PCR and apoptosis results revealed that most of the grafted porcine male donor cells could not differentiate past early-meiotic spermatocytes. We could induce partial differentiation of xenografted porcine donor cells in mouse testes, but not full induction of spermatogenesis. We have developed a very reliable technique for detecting foreign donor cells in recipient animals using a combination of PKH staining and slide PCR methods. Our results provide a valuable experimental model for applying and evaluating this technology in other species.
In situ HREM Study on the Thermal Stability of Atomic Layer Epitaxy Grown InAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) were grown by the atomic layer epitaxy technique and the structure and the thermal stability of QDs have been studied by using high resolution electron microscopy with in-situ heating experiment capability. The QDs were found to form a hemispherical structure with {136} side facet in the early stage of growth. The average height and diameter of the QD were found to be ∼ 5.5 nm and ∼ 23 nm, respectively. Upon capping by GaAs layer, however, the apex structure of QD changed to a flat one. In-situ heating experiment within TEM revealed that the uncapped QD remained stable until 580°C. However, at temperature above 600°C, the QD structure became flat due to the fast decrease of QD height. After flattening, the atoms diffused from the InAs QD to the GaAs substrate, resulting in the total collapse. The density of the QD decreased abruptly by this collapse and most QDs disappeared at above 600°C.

The influence of growth sequence on optical and structural properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QD) grown by atomic layer epitaxy was investigated systematically. It is found that growth interruption (GI) after In is more effective than non-GI after In in reducing the density of coalescent dots, and reducing the dot width distribution of the QDs. Meanwhile, dot densities are approximately doubled by non-GI after In. GI after As reduces dot height distribution compared with non-GI after As. Generally, GI after In plays a more critical role than GI after As does in formation of the QDs. The sample grown with In/GI/As/GI sequence shows the lowest 300 K-photoluminescence (PL) linewidth (∼30 meV), high PL peak separation between ground and 1st excited level (∼80 meV). From the result, it is known that In/GI/As/GI is the favorable growth sequence among the sample sets. Temperature dependence of PL linewidth shows that the In/GI/As/GI sample is insensitive to cryostat temperature and it is attributed to weak wetting effect. Thinner wetting layers shown in a cross-sectional TEM image supports this.

Polycarbonate is one of the most widely used engineering plastics because of its transparency and high impact strength. The poor wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate have limited its application in many fields. In order to improve the wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate we have deposited diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings. The diamond like carbon coatings were made using a high frequency ion beam gun by introducing H2 and CH4 gases. The coatings were characterized with scanning electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometer, and microscratch tester. Polymer hard coating was applied onto the polycarbonate substrate before depositing a diamond like carbon coating to see the effect of interlayer on the system's failure mechanism.

Undoped tin oxide films were grown on Si substrates by a reactive ion-assisted deposition technique in which oxygen ions were irradiated on depositing Sn particles. In order to investigate the oxidation from SnO to SnO2, the effects of initial oxygen contents and heat treatment on the final crystalline structure of tin oxide films were thoroughly examined. Oxygen to Sn metal ratio (No/Nsn) of as-deposited films were controlled from 1.1 to 1.9 by varying the relative arrival ratio (F) of oxygen ion to Sn particle from 0.025 to 0.1. Heat treatment was carried out in two different ways; one was post vacuum-annealing at 400 ∼ 600°C and the other was in-situ annealing 400 ∼ 500°C. Crystalline structure of as-deposited tin oxide films at room temperature was amorphous. After post-annealing at 400°C, only SnO phase was found below No/Nsn= 1.6 in x-ray diffraction and crystalline structure of the films comprising higher oxygen contents still appeared to be amorphous. Even though the films still showed SnO phase until Γ50 after 500°C post-annealing, however, mixed structures of SnO, SnO2, and intermediate Sn2O3/Sn3O4 were observed for the films Γ75 and Γ100 with higher oxygen contents. At 600°C annealing, perfect SnO2 phase was attained for the films having No/Nsn=1.9. On the other hand, pure polycrystalline SnO2 films could be obtained by in-situ annealing at low temperature. The values of No/Nsn and the chemical shifts with the variation of oxidation were carefully determined by the comparison of Sn MNN and O KLL Auger transitions. Surface microstructure of deposited films was also analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM).
