The presence of Al hydroxy species in solution during the synthesis of lepidocrocite had been previously found to influence the reaction towards goethite formation. However, under certain conditions, which are not unrealistic in terms of the natural soil environment, this influence does not occur, and Al appears to substitute for Fe(III) in the lepidocrocite structure. This substitution causes the unit-cell dimensions to decrease along the “a” direction and to increase along the “b.” From the differential line broadening of X-ray powder diffraction peaks, the incorporation of Al was found to inhibit crystal growth preferentially in the b-axis direction, the hkl peaks being more broadened the higher the value of k relative to h and l. Al-substituted lepidocrocites have been suggested to occur in soils, and although they can be synthesized under conditions approaching those expected in soils, it is considered that their formation in nature is unlikely or restricted to unusual environments.

Aluminum-substituted hematites (Fe2−xAlxO3) were synthesized from Fe-Al coprecipitates at pH 5.5, 7.0, and in 10−1, 10−2, and 10−2 M KOH at 70°C. As little as 1 mole % Al suppressed goethite completely at pH 7 whereas in KOH higher Al concentrations were necessary. Al substitution as determined chemically and by XRD line shift was related to Al addition up to a maximum of 16–17 mole %. The relationship between the crystallographic a0 parameter and Al substitution deviated from the Vegard rule. At low substitution crystallinity of the hematites was improved whereas higher substitution impeded crystal growth in the crystallographic z-direction as indicated by differential XRD line broadening. At still higher Al addition crystal growth was strongly retarded. The initial Al-Fe coprecipitate behaved differently from a mechanical mixture of the respective “hydroxides” and was, therefore, considered an aluminous ferrihydrite.

Ferrihydrite was transformed to goethite and/or hematite at various temperatures, [OH], and [Al]. Increasing temperature and [Al] favored hematite, increasing [OH] favored goethite. A given [Al] induces hematite more effectively at lower [OH]. Al substitution in goethites increased linearly with log[Al], but was independent of temperature. At a given [Al], substitution increased with decreasing [OH]. In a plot of Al/Fe in the goethite against [Al]/[Fe(OH)4−] in solution a straight line was obtained for all preparations independent of [OH].

Hydroxy-carboxylic acids inhibit the crystallization of ferrihydrite in the pH range 9–11 in the order

citric > meso tartaric > L-tartaric ≫ lactic

and favor hematite formation relative to goethite in the order

L-tartaric > citric > meso tartaric > lactic.

The crystal shape of hematite can change from hexagonal plates to acicular in the presence of these acids. The influence of the acids on the crystallization rises with increasing concentration and with falling pH.

The effectiveness in suppressing crystallization depends on whether and how strongly the acid adsorbs on ferrihydrite and how strongly it complexes with Fe3+ in solution. Inhibition of crystallization of hematite is believed to be due to the di- and tricarboxylic acid linking ferrihydrite particles in an immobile network. Goethite formation is suppressed by the acid complexing with Fe in solution and hindering nucleation; strongly adsorbing acids also adsorb on the nuclei and hinder further growth. Certain acids can induce hematite formation because they contain a group which acts as a template for nucleation of hematite.

Feroxyhite (δ′-FeOOH) in association with goethite and lepidocrocite was found as a dominant mineral in some rusty precipitates from Finland. These precipitates formed in the interstices of sand grains from rapidly flowing, Fe(II)-containing water which was very quickly oxidized as it flowed through the sediment. The mineral is distinguished from other FeOOH forms and from ferrihydrite mainly by its X-ray powder diffractogram. Further characteristics are an acicular morphology (possibly thin, rolled plates), an internal magnetic field at 4°K of ∼510 kOe, Fe-OH stretching bands at ∼2900 cm−1 and Fe-OH bending bands at 1110, 920, 790, and 670 cm−1, and an oxalate solubility between ferrihydrite and goethite or lepidocrocite. Feroxyhites with very similar properties were synthesized by oxidation of an Fe(II) solution with H2O2 at a pH between 5 and 8.

The influence of Al on the products formed by aerial oxidation at pH 5.5-7 and 20°C of Fe(II) chloride, sulfate and carbonate solutions, was examined. In all cases Al at levels Al/Al + Fe = 0.09−0.30 inhibited the formation of y phases (lepidocrocite and maghemite) in favor of goethite under conditions where, in the absence of Al, these y phases formed. The influence of Al in these laboratory studies was supported by field observations.

At higher levels of Al, ferrihydrite formation was favored. This effect of Al was seen to be the result of a slowing down in the hydrolysis/oxidation rate of the Fe(II) system.

The presence of Al not only changed the direction of mineral formation, but also caused the formation of Al substitued goethites which resembled in particle size and morphology the natural aluminiferous goethite extracted from a soil.

The mechanism of the transformation of lepidocrocite (γFeOOH) to goethite (αFeOOH) has previously been established and the effect of silicate on the transformation was investigated. Rather than completely inhibiting the reaction, as had been suggested, the presence of Si was found to merely retard the nucleation stage of the transformation. There was found to be no decrease in the dissolution rate of the lepidocrocite due to surface adsorption of Si.

Si has no effect if introduced after the nucleation stage, and under conditions of pH and temperature where the dissolution rate of the lepidocrocite largely determines the rate of transformation, the presence of Si has a reduced effect. The results show that Si is adsorbed and incorporated into the goethite structure, and due to its retarding effect on the nucleation, larger crystals of goethite are formed, many of which are twinned.

It is inferred from the results that the apparent stability of lepidocrocite occurring in soils in association with goethite cannot be attributed solely to the presence of Si in the soil system.

The conversion of lepidocrocite (-γFeOOH) to its more stable polymorph, goethite (αFeOOH) was followed by observing changes in crystal morphology, oxalate solubility, surface area and X-ray diffraction. In conjunction, kinetics were measured as functions of surface area, temperature, alkalinity and seeding with goethite crystals.

The results suggest that the transformation is not topochemical, but proceeds through the solution phase. The main steps governing the rate of transformation are, (1) the dissolution of lepidocrocite, and (2) the formation of goethite nuclei and subsequent growth. Either of these processes can be rate-determining under appropriate conditions.

A series of mixed iron and titanium oxide coprecipitates ranging in composition between 0 < Ti/Ti + Fe < 1 was synthesized and aged under varying conditions of pH, temperature and time in order to establish a working model for pedogenic titanium and titano-ferric oxides. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selective chemical dissolution, magnetic susceptibility, charge distribution and electron optical data indicate that the freshly prepared Fe-Ti oxides consist of an Fe-rich (Ti-ferrihydrite) phase (Ti/Ti + Fe ⩽ 0.70) having pH-dependent positive charge and a Ti-rich phase (Ti/Ti + Fe ⩾ 0.7) with permanent and pH dependent negative charge.

Synthetic Ti-ferrihydrite and amorphous TiO2 were completely soluble in acid ammonium oxalate (2 hr extraction in the dark) whereas poorly crystalline anatase (width at half height, WHH > 2.0°2θ) was partly oxalate soluble. NH4-oxalate soluble Ti was particularly high in soils developed under a cool montane climate (afro-alpine) and lower in soils of warmer subtropical climate, which contain anatase and rutile.

Several mixed Fe-Ti crystalline phases were identified after aging NH3 coprecipitates of Fe and Ti nitrate at 70°C and pH 5.5 for 70 days:

1. (1) goethite and hematite in the composition range 0 < Ti/Ti + Fe ⩽ 0.20; at low Ti concentrations (<5 mole %) goethite was favored and/or hematite inhibited

2. (2) microcrystalline pseudorutile in the composition range 0.20 ⩽ Ti/Ti + Fe ⩽ 0.70

3. (3) anatase and ferriferous anatase in the range 0.70 ⩽ Ti/Ti + Fe < 1.0; with decreasing proportion of Ti the crystal-Unity of anatase decreased.

The results suggest that secondary or pedogenic Ti-Fe oxides can form by coprecipitation and crystallization in the weathering solution, and emphasize the essential role of water (as opposed to dry oxidation) in the alteration of primary titaniferous minerals.

The formation of hematite from amorphous Fe(III)hydroxide in aqueous systems at pH 6 and 70°C, both with and without oxalate, was followed by kinetic measurements, electron microscopy, i.r. spectroscopy and thermal analysis.

In the absence of oxalate, small amorphous particles coalesce into aggregates which eventually become single crystals of hematite. When oxalate is present, crystal growth is much faster and does not proceed through the intermediate stage of aggregation. Aggregates, when formed, consist of groups of single crystals. It is suggested that oxalate accelerates the nucleation of hematite crystals by acting as a template, the Fe-Fe distance in Fe-oxalate ions being similar to that in hematite.

Fifteen iron oxide accumulations from the bottoms of two Finnish lakes (“lake ores”) were found to contain as much as 50% Fe. Differential X-ray powder diffraction and selective dissolution by oxalate showed that the samples consisted of poorly crystallized goethite and ferrihydrite. The crust ores of one lake had higher ferrihydrite to goethite ratios than the nodular ores of the other lake. The higher ferrihydrite proportion was attributed to a higher rate of Fe2+ supply from the ground water and/or a higher rate of oxidation as a function of water depth and bottom-sediment permeability.

Values of Al-for-Fe substitution of the goethites determined from unit-cell dimensions agreed with those obtained from chemical extraction if the unit-cell volume rather than the c dimension was used. In very small goethite crystals a slight expansion of the a unit-cell dimension is probaby compensated by a corresponding contraction of the c dimension, so that a contraction of the c dimension need not necessarily be caused by Al substitution.

The goethites of the two lakes differed significantly in their Al-for-Fe substitutions and hence in their unit-cell sizes, OH-bending characteristics, dehydroxylation temperatures, dissolution kinetics, and Möss-bauer parameters. The difference in Al substitution (0 vs. 7 mole %) is attributed to the Al-supplying power of the bottom sediments: the silty-clayey sediments in one lake appear to have supplied Al during goethite formation, whereas the gravelly-sandy sediments in the other lake did not. The compositions of the goethites thus reflect their environments of formation.

Storage of ferrihydrite in aqueous suspensions at 24°C and pHs between 2.5 and 12 for as long as three years resulted in the formation of goethite and hematite. The proportions and crystallinity of these products varied widely with the pH. Maximum hematite was formed between pH 7 and 8, and maximum goethite at pH 4 and at pH 12. The crystallinity of both products, as indicated by X-ray powder diffraction line broadening and magnetic hyperfine field values and distribution widths, was poorer, the lower the proportion of the corresponding product in the mixture. The existence of two competitive formation processes is suggested: goethite is formed via solution, preferably from monovalent Fe(III) ions [Fe(OH)2+ and Fe(OH)4−], and hematite by internal rearrangement and dehydration within the ferrihydrite aggregates. This concept relates the proportions of goethite and hematite to the activity of the Fe(III) ion species in solution, and implies that conditions favorable for the formation of goethite are unfavorable for that of hematite and vice versa.

Mixtures of magnetite and goethite were formed by the slow oxidation of mixed FeCl2-AlCl3 solutions in an alkaline environment at room temperature. The compositions of the products ranged from almost exclusively magnetite in Al-free systems to goethite only at Al/(Al + Fe) ≈ 0.3. The magnetic phase consisted of a partly oxidized (Fe2+/Fe3+ < 0.5), Al-substituted magnetite. The unit-cell edge length a of the magnetite decreased with increasing Al(Al ≈ 0–0.37 per formula unit, corresponding to 0–14 mole % Al) and decreasing Fe2+ in the structure as described by the empirical relationship α(A) = 8.3455 + 0.0693 Fe2+ - 0.0789 Al. A correlation between the experimentally determined a and that calculated from the unit-cell edge lengths of end-member magnetite, maghemite, and hercynite was highly significant (r = .96) although shifted by about 0.01 Å. Mössbauer spectra showed Al to have entered preferentially the tetrahedral rather than the octahedral sites at low Al substitutions (<0.15 per formula unit), perhaps because of steric reasons. With increasing Al substitution the crystal size of magnetite decreased and structural strain increased, indicating that the structure had a limited capability to incorporate Al under these synthesis conditions. The capacity of the goethite structure to tolerate more Al may explain why goethite replaced magnetite at higher Al concentrations.

Minerals in surface environments form in both turbulent and non-turbulent systems. This study compares the properties of Al goethite formed from ferrihydrite at 60°C in 0.3 M KOH with and without mechanical stirring. Compared to the static system, stirring increased crystal order and needle thickness, decreased unit cell edge length a, but not b and c, reduced the separation between the 2 OH-bending vibrations, increased Al substitution and promoted hematite formation.

IronIII for TiIV substitution in the structure of pedogenic and synthetic anatase of up to Fe/ (Ti+Fe) 0.1 mol/mol was indicated by an increase in unit cell size as measured by XRD line shifts. Mössbauer- and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra at both, 298 K and 4.2 K supported this by the presence of signals typical for octahedrally coordinated FeIII in a diamagnetic matrix. Charge compensation was achieved by structural OH, as indicated by FTIR bands at 3360 and 960 cm−1, which were absent in pure anatase and which disappeared on heating. The weight loss on heating amounted to ca. 0.5 mol H2O/mol Fe. At 600°C structural Fe was ejected, the unit cell size decreased to that of pure anatase, and pseudobrookite, Fe2TiO5, was formed.

Although phosphate sorption by goethite and other less-abundant Fe oxides strongly influences the concentration of this anion in the soil solution and aquatic environments, relatively little is known on the P-sorption characteristics of natural goethites. For this reason, we examined the P-sorption capacity and time course of P sorption of 10 goethite-rich soil, ferricrete and lake ore samples, in which the content and nature of mineral impurities were unlikely to affect P sorption significantly. Phosphate sorption could be adequately described by a modified Freundlich equation including a time term. The amount of P sorbed after 1 day of equilibration at a concentration of 1 mg P/liter ranged widely (0.36–2.04 /μmol P/m2). The total P sorbed after 75 days of equilibration varied less, in relative terms (1.62–3.18 μmol P/m2), i.e., a higher slow sorption tended to compensate for a lower initial (fast) sorption. Total sorbed P (X̄ = 2.62, SD = 0.52 μmol P/m2) was similar to the sorption capacity of synthetic goethites, suggesting a common sorption mechanism and the predominance of one type of crystal face, which, according to previous transmission electron microscope observations, might be the (110).

The extent of the slow reaction correlated to the ratio between micropore surface area and total surface area, as well as to oxalate-extractable Fe, which is an estimation of the ferrihydrite content. Ferrihydrite impurities might affect the slow reaction by contributing to the microporosity of some samples. Silicate adsorbed on the surface of the goethites was readily desorbed during phosphate sorption and did not significantly affect the extent of the slow sorption process.

Seven Al-containing lepidocrocite samples, γ-Fe1−xAlxOOH, prepared from FeCl2/Al(N03)3 solutions with initial Al/(Al + Fe) mole ratios Ci of 0.0025, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.10 and 0.15 mol/mol, were examined by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature (RT) and at various temperatures in the range of 8 to 80 K. The spectra at RT and 80°K consist of broadened quadrupole doublets and were analyzed in terms of a single doublet and of a model-independent quadrupole-splitting distribution, the latter yielding the best fit. The observed variations of the quadrupole-splitting parameters with increasing Ci are inconclusive as to whether the Al cations are substituting into the structure. The temperature at which the onset of magnetic ordering is reflected in the spectra, was measured by the thermoscan method with zero source velocity. A gradual shift from 50 K for Ci = 0.0025 mol/mol to 44 K for Ci = 0.10 mol/mol was observed for that temperature. As compared to earlier studies of Al-free γ-FeOOH samples with similar morphological characteristics, the fractional doublet area in the mixed sextet-doublet spectra at 35 K is significantly higher for the present lepidocrocites. This observation is ascribed to the substitution of Al cations into the lepidocrocite structure. A similar conclusion is inferred from the variation with Ci of the maximum-probability hyperfine field derived from the spectra recorded at 8 K and fitted with a model-independent hyperfine-field distribution. The magnetic results suggest that for the sample corresponding to Ci = 0.15 mol/mol, not all of the initially present Al has been incorporated into the structure.

Aluminium-substituted goethites are found in many soils and can also be synthesised readily in the laboratory. In recent years, synthetic substituted goethites have been examined by various techniques including XRD, IR, TEM and dissolution kinetics (Thiel, 1963; Jonas & Solymar, 1970; Fey & Dixon, 1981; Fysh & Fredericks, 1983; Schulze & Schwertmann, 1984; Schwertmann, 1984). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have shown that as Al substitution rises above 10%, the goethite needles become shorter and also thicker in the a direction. Furthermore, crystals which at zero substitution consist of domains parallel to the c axis become less domainic with increasing Al substitution (Schulze & Schwertmann, 1984).

To investigate the influence of carbonate on the formation of goethite and lepidocrocite, ∼200 samples were synthesized by oxidizing FeCl2 solutions with air/CO2 gas mixtures at ambient temperature and pH 6 and 7. The proportion of lepidocrocite in the lepidocrocite/goethite mixtures (Lp/(Lp + Gt)) decreased from 100 to 0% with increasing in solution and with decreasing average oxidation rate (AOR). These two parameters explained 81% of the variation of Lp/(Lp + Gt)). At a given , more goethite was formed at pH 6 than at pH 7. The Lp + Gt mixtures contained 0–8 mg g−1 carbon (Ct) which could not be removed by washing. Ct reached apparent saturation at a equilibrium concentration of ∼6–8 and 60–80 mmol l−1 at pH 6 and pH 7, respectively. In a plot of Ct vs. Lp/(Lp + Gt) all data fell on the same line irrespective of oxidation parameters (pH, AOR). IR spectra showed two broad bands at ∼1300 and 1500 cm−1 which can be assigned to distorted carbonate adsorbed at the goethite surface. Identical bands were also found in a young, poorly crystalline goethite formed from coal mine drainage in Ohio. It is suggested that carbonate anions direct the polymerization of the double bands of FeO3(OH)3 octahedra common to both minerals toward a corner sharing arrangement, and thereby to goethite, whereas chloride permits edge-sharing as in lepidocrocite.
