A high-charge smectite from Arizona [cation-exchange capacity (CEC) = 120 meq/100 g] and a low-charge smectite from Wyoming (CEC = 90 meq/100 g) were used to prepare homoionic tetra-methylammonium (TMA)-clay complexes. The adsorption of benzene, toluene, and o-xylene as vapors by the dry TMA-clays and as solutes from water by the wet TMA-clays was studied. The adsorption of the organic vapors by the dry TMA-smectite samples was strong and apparently consisted of interactions with both the aluminosilicate mineral surfaces and the TMA exchange ions in the interlayers. In the adsorption of organic vapors, the closer packing of TMA ions in the dry high-charge TMA-smectite, compared with the dry low-charge TMA-smectite, resulted in a somewhat higher degree of shape-selective adsorption of benzene, toluene, and xylene. In the presence of water, the adsorption capacities of both samples for the aromatic compounds were significantly reduced, although the uptake of benzene from water by the low-charge TMA-smectite was still substantial. This lower sorption capacity was accompanied by increased shape-selectivity for the aromatic compounds. The reduction in uptake and increased selectivity was much more pronounced for the water-saturated, high-charge TMA-smectite than for the low-charge TMA-smectite. Hydration of the TMA exchange ions and/or the mineral surfaces apparently reduced the accessibility of the aromatic molecules to interlamellar regions. The resulting water-induced sieving effect was greater for the high-charge TMA-smectite due to the higher density of exchanged TMA-ions. The low-charge Wyoming TMA-smectite was a highly effective adsorbent for removing benzene from water and may be useful for purifying benzene-contaminated water.

Raman and Fourier-transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic methods and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques have been used to study the influence of hydrazine on the vibrational modes of kaolinite. Strong vibrational perturbations of the OH-stretching and -deformation bands were observed in the Raman and FTIR spectra on intercalation. The intensities of the Raman- and IR-active OH-stretching bands decreased significantly upon intercalation; the intensities of the Raman bands were reduced to a greater extent than the IR bands. The deformation bands were also strongly perturbed by the presence of hydrazine in the interlamellar region. Upon evacuation of the intercalate, two new bands at 3628 and 912 cm−1 were noted, indicating the presence of a different structural conformation of the complex under vacuum. Similar results were obtained using XRD, on evacuation of the kaolinite-hy-drazine (KH) complex the d(001) value decreased from 10.4 to 9.6 Å. Partial collapse of the intercalate from 10.4 to 9.6 Å was probably due to keying of the -NH2 moiety of hydrazine into the siloxane ditrigonal cavity, as indicated by a blue-shift of the inner-OH band from 3620 to 3628 cm-1. Structural OH vibrational modes may therefore be useful probes of amine interactions with clay mineral surfaces.

Iron-chromium hydroxides are important solid phases governing the aqueous concentrations of Cr(III) in soils and fly ashes. Although direct identification of noncrystalline (Fe,Cr)(OH)3 is difficult, the infrared spectra of noncrystalline Fe(OH)3 and Cr(OH)3, coprecipitated (Fe,Cr)(OH)3, and physical mixtures of Fe(OH)3 and Cr(OH)3 can be distinguished on the basis of the asymmetric stretching doublet (v3) of structural carbonate anions. As the Cr mole fraction of the coprecipitated (Fe,Cr)(OH)3 increases, the position of the low-frequency v3 peak (v3″) changes progressively to higher frequencies, and the carbonate v3 splitting decreases. No change in carbonate v3 splitting or v3″ location was observed for physical mixtures of Fe(OH)3 and Cr(OH)3. The changes in v3 splitting are believed to be caused by different degrees of polarization of the carbonate ligand by the Fe and Cr cations.

Pure Cr(OH)3 exhibits a strong affinity for carbonate and H2O and tends to remain noncrystalline even at very high pHs. In contrast, pure Fe(OH)3 gradually converts to crystalline goethite at high pH, to the exclusion of much of the H2O and carbonate. The presence of Cr in (Fe,Cr)(OH)3 solid solutions seems to inhibit the transformation to crystalline goethite. The strong association of carbonate with Cr and the kinetic inertness of Cr(III) inner-sphere complexes in general may account for the maintenance of noncrystalline solid-solution materials in lieu of transformation to a crystalline end product.

Acrylamide has been polymerized between the layers of kaolinite by heat treatment. Acrylamide monomer was first intercalated by the displacement reaction between a kaolinite-N-methylformamide (NMF) intercalation compound and a 10% acrylamide aqueous solution. The resulting intercalation compound showed a basal spacing of 11.3 Å. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with cross polarization and magic angle spinning (13C CP/MAS-NMR) indicated the replacement of NMF by acrylamide. IR spectroscopy also showed the formation of hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyls of kaolinite. When the kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound was heated at 300°C for 1 hr, the basal spacing increased to 11.4 Å, and IR and 13C CP/MAS-NMR showed the disappearance of C=C bonds, indicating the polymerization of acrylamide. The heat-treated kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound was resistant to 30 min-washing with water, whereas the untreated kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound collapsed after the same treatment, an observation consistent with acrylamide polymerization between the layers of kaolinite. IR spectroscopy revealed that polyacrylamide was hydrogen bonded to kaolinite, but in a manner different from the hydrogen bonding of acrylamide.

Effects of clay content on saturated hydraulic conductivities (k) of two coarse textured soils, Vista (mixed thermic Typic Xerochrepts) and Hanford (mixed nonacid Typic Xerorthents), and a medium textured soil, Wyo (thermic Mollic Haploxeralfs) series, were investigated. The clay and combined sand + silt fraction extracted from each of the soils were mixed with the respective soils to yield mixtures ranging from 0% clay to clay levels exceeding those in the natural soils. Rates of water movement through prepared columns of the mixtures were compared to rates through unfractionated soils.

Hydraulic conductivities for unfractionated soil and prepared mixtures were high for the Vista (maximum k = 100) compared with the Hanford (maximum k = 30) and Wyo (maximum k = 20) samples. These conductivities suggest that the relatively even distribution of particles among fractions of sand, silt, and clay gave rise to a greater proportion of larger conducting pores in the Vista sample, whereas the preponderance of particles in the fine sand and very fine sand and coarse silt fractions of the Hanford soil and in the medium silt or fine silt and clay fractions of the Wyo soil limited the proportions of larger conducting pores. Marked differences in k were measured for mixed-fraction systems for all soils. The largest k values for the Hanford soil were from systems containing proportions of the different size fractions similar to that of the natural soil. The highest k values for the Vista soil were from systems containing a clay content slightly less than or greater than that of the natural soil. Additions of clay to Wyo soil increased k values.

The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory sums the attractive van der Waals and repulsive electrostatic forces as a function of separation distance to predict the interaction between charged particles immersed in a liquid. In aqueous media, however, non-electrostatic polar (electron acceptor/electron donor or Lewis acid/base) forces between particles with high energy surfaces often are comparable to, or greater than, the components of DLVO theory. By means of contact angle measurements on smooth self-supporting clay films, the values of the polar surface forces (AB) and the van der Waals forces (LW) of hectorite were measured. Determinations of ζ were used to derive the electrostatic forces (EL). Calculations based on the values obtained for the EL, LW, and AB forces show that for smooth spheres with a radius of 1 µm in a ≥ 0.1 M NaCl solution a net attraction exists leading to flocculation. At NaCl concentrations of ≤ 0.01 M, a repulsion energy of about +500 to +1300 kT exists at separation distances ≤ 50 Å, preventing contact between particles, thus ensuring stability of the colloidal suspension. At these concentrations, theory predicts that small clay particles or edges of clay crystals having an effective radius of curvature ≤ 10 Å should be energetic enough to overcome the repulsion barrier which prevents flocculation. Experimentally, for NaCl solution concentrations of ≥ 0.1 M, suspensions of hectorite particles flocculated, whereas at concentrations of ≥ 0.01 M, the suspensions remained stable. These experimental results agree with the predictions made by summing all three forces, but contradict the calculations based on classical DLVO theory.

Stable, three-dimensionally ordered complexes were formed from synthetically hydrated, highly ordered kaolinite (d(001) = 8.4 Å) and several organic compounds. Removal of the intercalated organic compound by drying or by water washing recovered the 8.4-Å hydrate with its ordered layer stacking essentially unchanged. Some of the complexes were stable for less than a day, whereas others appeared to be stable indefinitely. The compounds that formed ordered complexes were dimethylsulfoxide, formamide, hydrazine-hydrate, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and pyridine. Clay-organic complexes that were prepared from methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetaldehyde, N-methylformamide, methylethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, and K-acetate were stable only if they were immersed in the intercalating medium and had little or no stacking order.

Many of the organic compounds intercalated by the 8.4-Å hydrate are not known to be intercalated by non-hydrated kaolinite either directly or indirectly. Isolated water molecules appear to be keyed into the ditrigonal holes formed by the basal oxygen of the silicate tetrahedra of the 8.4-Å hydrate. These water molecules, referred to as “hole water,” and fluorine ions that had replaced ~20% of the inner-surface hydroxyls of the 8.4-Å phase sufficiently altered the interlayer bonding to allow an expansion of the inner-layer spaces by a variety of guest molecules. The presence of these guest molecules between the clay layers not only changed the basal spacing and perturbed the infrared (IR) bands arising from the inner-surface hydroxyls, it also shifted the position of the IR band arising from the inner hydroxyl.

Li-bearing smectite minerals occurring as hydrothermal alteration products of magnesium silicate minerals in skarns associated with the Moldova Nouǎ, Romania, porphyry copper deposit were examined by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal and chemical analyses. Li-bearing smectite containing 0.45–0.50 Li/unit cell is common, whereas smectite containing 0.21–0.33 Li/unit cell is less common. Both materials coexist with talc and kerolite. The Li-bearing smectite minerals (b = 9.111 Å) contains semi-ordered or ordered stacking and is highly crystalline, similar to saponite. After 3-yr storage under laboratory conditions in an air-dried state (RH = 50%) or after heating for 2 hr at 100°, 200°, 300°, or 400°C, the Li-bearing smectite minerals showed charactenstics of a regular 1:1 interstratification of anhydrous and dihydrate layers. Some segregation of the anhydrous, monohydrate, and dihydrate layers was noted.

The amount of Li-for-Mg substitution was found to be close to that in hectorite, and the number of octahedral vacancies was similar to that in stevensite. This Li-bearing smectite apparently formed directly from colloidal suspensions at atmospheric temperature and pressure.

Weathering of minerals often produces intimate mixtures of reactants and products in a smaller volume than that explored by an electron microprobe. As a result, many microanalyses are difficult to decipher because they are composite analyses of mixtures. A procedure to resolve such microanalyses into their component parts was applied here to data obtained in a study of the weathering of muscovite and biotite in granite gneiss and associated soils. A key element oxide content (K2O, in the examples demonstrated) was plotted against Si/Al ratio for all data. This achieved a spread of points having an external shape depending on the compositions of the pure phases present in the various mixtures analyzed. In all probability, some of the microanalyses consisted of only a single phase, or almost so, and these points were located at or near extremities of the body of data. The aim of subsequent treatment was to encompass the data within boundary curves, each of which corresponded to mixtures of any two of the pure phases present. The chemical compositions of some phases, for example, kaolinite and muscovite, are known, and boundary curves for such mixtures were calculated directly. The compositions of unknown or suspected phases, however, were estimated from the graph of K2O content against Si/Al ratio, in conjunction with graphs of the other element oxide contents plotted against Si/Al ratio. The unknown compositions were subsequently refined by successive approximations. Data in the vicinity of the boundary curves were adjusted for the presence of free iron oxides containing structural Al. Once a satisfactory set of intersecting boundary curves was developed to encompass the data, the compositions of the major phases in each system were obtained, and the diagram of boundary curves was used to estimate the relative proportions of these phases at each point analyzed by the microprobe.

Clay fractions separated from the A2, B, and C horizons of a soil formed on granite gneiss showed X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) spacings characteristic of trioctahedral illite. The trioctahedral illite was derived from biotite, and its development through various stages of weathering was followed by optical and electron microscopy combined with electron microanalysis. In the initial stages of weathering, Fe2+ within biotite was oxidized, without the loss of much K. During this process, biotite flakes became slightly buckled and fractured. Solutions moved into the damaged flakes leading to chemical weathering and exfoliation along cleavages and angular fractures. Major exfoliation broke up the flakes into segments, which themselves contained minor exfoliations and alterations along cleavage planes. The extent of exfoliation and alteration continued until thinner and shorter segments consisted almost wholly of thin (< 0.25 µm), parallel wafers separated by less compact layers of particles and microaggregates. The segments finally lost their shape and divided into clay-size particles. Parts of the thin wafers had the same chemical composition (and structure) as the original, intact flakes of oxidized biotite. The same parts of wafers retained some of the optical properties of the original biotite, and, when broken down to clay, they produced the XRD spacings of 10 and 1.54 Å, typical of fine-grained, trioctahedral mica (illite).

Mixtures of magnetite and goethite were formed by the slow oxidation of mixed FeCl2-AlCl3 solutions in an alkaline environment at room temperature. The compositions of the products ranged from almost exclusively magnetite in Al-free systems to goethite only at Al/(Al + Fe) ≈ 0.3. The magnetic phase consisted of a partly oxidized (Fe2+/Fe3+ < 0.5), Al-substituted magnetite. The unit-cell edge length a of the magnetite decreased with increasing Al(Al ≈ 0–0.37 per formula unit, corresponding to 0–14 mole % Al) and decreasing Fe2+ in the structure as described by the empirical relationship α(A) = 8.3455 + 0.0693 Fe2+ - 0.0789 Al. A correlation between the experimentally determined a and that calculated from the unit-cell edge lengths of end-member magnetite, maghemite, and hercynite was highly significant (r = .96) although shifted by about 0.01 Å. Mössbauer spectra showed Al to have entered preferentially the tetrahedral rather than the octahedral sites at low Al substitutions (<0.15 per formula unit), perhaps because of steric reasons. With increasing Al substitution the crystal size of magnetite decreased and structural strain increased, indicating that the structure had a limited capability to incorporate Al under these synthesis conditions. The capacity of the goethite structure to tolerate more Al may explain why goethite replaced magnetite at higher Al concentrations.

The reduction and reoxidation of three nontronite samples, GAN (API H-33a, Garfield, Washington), SWa-1 (ferruginous Washington smectite), and NG-1 (Hohen Hagen, Federal Republic of Germany) were studied with visible absorption and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The intensity of the intervalence electron transfer (IT) band at 730 nm in these nontronites was monitored during reduction and reoxidation at 277, 294, and 348 K. The results showed that the intensity of the band followed the number of Fe(II)-O-Fe(III) groups in the clay crystal, increasing to a maximum at about Fe(II): total Fe = 0.4; upon complete reduction, the band decreased to about the intensity of the unaltered, oxidized sample. With reoxidation of the sample with O2, the intensity of the band increased sharply, followed by a gradual decay back to the original, oxidized intensity. The ultimate level of Fe reduction achieved was at least 92%. Concomitantly, the color changed from yellow through green, blue-green, dark blue, light blue, and light gray as the Fe(II) content increased. The GAN nontronite was more difficult to reduce than the SWa-1 or NG-1 samples. The rate and level of reduction increased with the amount of reducing agent added.

Lepidocrocite samples, γ-FeOOH, containing 0–10 mole % Al-for-Fe substitution were synthesized at 15°C and pH 8 by oxidizing mixed FeCl2-AlCl3 solutions. The unit-cell parameters a, b, and c were measured from step-counted X-ray powder diffractograms using seven lines and Si as an internal standard. With increasing Al substitution from 0 to 10 mole % the unit-cell edge lengths a, b, and c decreased regularly by 0.3, 0.8, and 0.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the crystals became smaller, but gained in thermal stability. Decrease in crystal size parallel to the y axis led to a significant increase of the OH-stretch vibration and a decrease of the out-of-plane OH-bending vibration due to a weakening of the hydrogen bond between the zig-zag layers in the structure.

The effect of ethylene oxide-sterilization on homoionic (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Al3+, and Fe3+) montmorillonite samples was examined. The results indicate that ethylene oxide polymerized to polyethylene glycol in the interlayer of Cu2+-, Al3+-, and Fe3+-saturated clays, as substantiated by the increase in the d(001) values, as well as by the decrease in the cation-exchange capacity after reaction. On the contrary, ethylene oxide failed to react in the presence of the Na+-, K+-, and Ca2+-clays, likely due to the lower acidity of the exchange cations.
