Summary
Wären Flächeninhalt und Menschenzahl der einzige Massstab für die Grösse und Bedeutung der Staaten, so stände der Attische weit unter Hunnischen und Mongolischen Horden. Aber die Masse erregt nur Staunen; der Geist ladet Herz und Gemüth zu bewundernder Liebe ein: jene stürzt zusamnien über sich selber, wenn kein lebendiger Geist in ihr waltet. Dem Geiste ist alles unterthan: dieser versicherte den Athenern einen hohen Rang unter den Völkern der Weltgeschichte. Durch diesen überwand eine geringe Schaar die zahllosen Haufen der Barbaren bei Marathon, Salamis und Platää: der Weg der Freiheit ging über Leichen, aber aus der blutigen Saat erwuchs ein Geschlecht, welches der Geist der Todten zu neuen grossen Thaten entflammte. Durch dieselbe Geisteskraft erwarb eine kleine Bürgerzahl, eine Stadt die Herrschaft über tausend, wie Ein Feldherr grossen Schaaren gebietet: in unendlicher Fülle und geordneter Mannigfaltigkeit entfaltete sich zugleich die Blume der Kunst, das Leben zu erheitern und zu vergeistigen; und die Weisen schöpften aus dem tiefen Quell ihrer Seelen und der Natur ewige Gedanken Gottes: Athen ward die Lehrerin aller edeln und freien Künste und der Wissenschaften, die Erzieherin der Zeitgenossen und der Nachwelt.
