Chapter 13: Venous ultrasound

Normal Femoral Vein

This right femoral vein demonstrates what appears to initially be a thrombus but when full compression is applied, and the vein walls fully coapt, this confirms that artifact was responsible for the false echogenicity noted in the vein.

Full compression of the right femoral vein thereby ruling out a deep vein thrombosis at this location.

This left femoral vein demonstrates full compression, ruling out a DVT. Notice the lymph node at the top of the screen and how the depth should be reduced to maximize screen real estate.

Full compression of the left femoral vein is demonstrated ruling out a thrombus at this location.
