About - Bibles
For over four centuries, Cambridge has been more than a publisher—we have been a steward of Scripture. In 1591, we printed our first Bible, the Geneva Bible, read by Shakespeare, Bunyan, and the taken on the Mayflower with the first English settlers in America. That moment marked the beginning of a journey that continues to this day: a commitment to preserving the Word of God with unmatched care, reverence, and craftsmanship.
A Heritage of Excellence
Cambridge is the world’s oldest Bible publisher, with a legacy that stretches back to 1591. Over the centuries, we’ve produced landmark editions that have shaped the history of Bible publishing—among them, the first Cambridge printing of the King James Bible in 1629 and the celebrated 1763 Folio Bible by John Baskerville, often hailed as one of the finest books ever made. These milestones are more than historical footnotes; they are the foundation of our reputation for precision, beauty, and lasting quality.
As the King’s Printer, Cambridge also carries a unique responsibility: to preserve and present two of the most foundational texts in the English language—the 1611 King James Version and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. This role demands the highest standards of accuracy, reverence, and craftsmanship, ensuring that these timeless works continue to inspire and guide generations.
Crafted to Endure
Every Cambridge Bible is a signature piece—designed, printed, and bound using time-honored techniques and the finest materials. From practical hardbacks to luxurious calfskin and goatskin bindings, our Bibles are made to be cherished, studied, and passed down through generations. Art-gilt edges, ribbon markers, and presentation boxes are not mere embellishments—they are expressions of our belief that Scripture deserves to be treated with dignity and care.
Designed for Today, Rooted in Tradition
While our methods are steeped in tradition, our vision is forward-looking. We publish in a wide range of translations—including the KJV, ESV, NASB, NKJV, NRSV, and NIV—across British and American English. Our editions span pew and pulpit formats, large and giant print, and everything in between. Whether for personal devotion, scholarly study, or communal worship, there is a Cambridge Bible designed to meet the moment.
Innovation Meets Integrity
We continue to embrace new technologies while upholding our commitment to textual accuracy and typographic excellence. From classic hot-metal type-settings of the 1920s to modern digital layouts, our Bibles reflect a blend of heritage and innovation. Our recent Alexa skill, which brings the Book of Common Prayer to life through voice technology, is an example of how we’re reimagining tradition for the digital age.
