Summary
This chapter discusses the historical recognition of various forms of family violence – child abuse and neglect, intimate partner violence, and elder abuse – as serious social problems that require a public rather than a private, individual response. Research that examines the prevalence of as well as risk and protective factors for each type of abuse is also reviewed. The chapter concludes with an exploration of future directions for research and practice to better understand and address the problem of family violence.
