Summary
Genre can be understood in complementary ways. On the one hand, in taxonomical terms, it is something resulting from a classification of literature, whether with respect to current reasoning or with respect to the past. On the other hand, in a more recent outlook, it is a dynamic communicative link between producers and consumers of texts. In particular, it is partly through genre that writers and publishers market their texts, and partly through genre that audiences choose what to buy, what to read, and how to read it.
