Summary
In the first lecture in my first psychology class at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, the professor, James Marcia – then a clinical psychology graduate student at The Ohio State University and now a well-known psychologist of identity development – said that psychology was not the science of the mind, but the science of behavior. And since behavior was seen to be largely under the control of reinforcement contingencies and incentives, I took hope from this statement: If you could just arrange the incentives of your life artfully enough you could be, or achieve, just about anything you wanted to.
