James Mellaart is Assistant Director of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara. He has spent the last ten years in Turkey excavating and making extensive field surveys of preclassical sites, which led to the discovery of numerous hither to unknown cultures. He has directed three seasons of excavation at Hacilar, an early Chalcolithic painted pottery site in S. W. Turkey, now dated by C14 to the 6th millenium B. C. in this article he describes his misgivings about the conbventional dating of Balkan cultures and their correlation with Anatolia and proposes an alternative chronology which reconciles recent radiocarbon dates from the Balkans with new Anatolian evidence. FIG.1 gives a key map to the area discussed.
