Since I was still in an early stage of my pro- fessional development, I needed publications. He offered me an opportunity, so I started writing the panel data book. It was purely accidental.

- Early on, I wrote papers largely by reading Econometrica and asking what I would have done differently, THE ET INTERVIEW: PROFESSOR PETER SCHMIDT 889 or what you could do next. Those were rather derivative papers. They were easy to publish, but few of them had much impact. Later, I decided to write less articles, but better ones.

When people say, “Oh, Bayesian, everyone’s doing Bayesian work now,” they mean that they are using MCMC. MCMC is simply a computational devise for going from prior to posterior. You can do that without any decision problem in mind.
