Since 8 December 2025, all articles accepted for publication in the International Journal of Cultural Property are published ‘open access’; published with a Creative Commons licence and freely available to read online (see the journal’s Open Access Options page for available licence options). We have an OA option for every author: the costs of open access publication will be covered through agreements between the publisher and the author’s institution, payment of APCs for those with third-party funding, or else waived entirely, ensuring every author can publish and enjoy the benefits of OA. Please see the journal's Open Access Options page for instructions on how to request an APC waiver. See this FAQ for more information.

International Journal of Cultural Property is a fully open access leading peer-reviewed journal, published since 1992. It features articles, essays, editorial comments, current developments, and book reviews by leading scholars and practitioners from around the world addressing developments in cultural heritage and art law in a multidisciplinary context. The Journal also provides analyses of decisions by international, regional, and national courts and tribunals, and contemporary practice and policies of intergovernmental and national bodies and relevant non-governmental organizations in the field.

Call for special issue proposal - 'Natural Heritage as Cultural Property: legal and social dimensions to the collection, display, and sale of natural history specimens'

We are seeking proposals that put a spotlight on natural history specimens and collections as an important category of cultural property. We invite contributions that discuss issues of cultural property protections such as crime, provenance research, or restitution in the context of natural history as well as theoretical pieces that reflect on relationship between natural history specimens and ‘traditional’ cultural objects. We also invite research into the legal and social dimensions of natural history specimens as cultural objects. We encourage submissions from scholars in all career stages and world regions, and from multiple disciplines with a connection to cultural heritage and from the natural sciences.
