A simple momentum model, assuming that snow compacts along a prescribed pressure–density curve, is used to calculate the pressure attenuation of shock waves in snow. Four shock-loading situations are examined: instantaneously applied pressure impulses for one-dimensional, cylindrical and spherical shock-wave geometries, and a one-dimensional pressure impulse of finite duration. Calculations show that for an instantaneously applied impulse the pressure attenuation for one-dimensional, cylindrical and spherical shock waves is determined by the pressure density (P–ρ) compaction curve of snow. The maximum attenuation for a one-dimensional shock wave is proportional to (Xf–X0)−1.5 for the multi-stage (P–ρ) curve and (Xf–X0)−2 when compaction occurs in a single step (single-stage compaction), where (Xf–X0) is the shock-wave propagation distance. Cylindrical waves have a maximum attenutation that varies from (R–R0)−2 for single-stage compaction and (R–R0)−1.5 for multi-stage compaction, when (R – R0) ≪ R0, where R is the propagation radius and R0 is the interior radius over which a pressure impulse is applied, to R−4 when (R – R0) ≫ R0 Spherical waves have a maximum attenuation that varies from (R – R0)−2 for single-stage compaction and (R – R0)−1.5 for multi-stage compaction to R−6 when 〈R – R0〉 ≫ R0.

The shock-wave pressure in snow for a finite-duration pressure impulse is determined by the pressure impulse versus time profile during the time interval of the impulse. After the pressure impulse ends, shock-wave pressure attenuation is the same as for an instantaneously applied pressure impulse containing the same total momentum. Pressure attenuation near a shock-wave source, where the duration of the shock wave is relatively short, is greater than for a shock wave farther from a source where the shock wave has a relatively long duration. Shock-wave attenuation in snow can be delayed or reduced by increasing the duration of a finite-duration pressure impulse. A sufficiently long-duration impulse may result in no shock-wave pressure attenuation in a shallow snow cover.

Speke Glacier, the best studied and largest single glacier in the Ruwenzori Range (Uganda, East Africa), was revisited in January 1990. A comparison of its present state with former observations reveals that its terminus receded 35–45 m between 1958 and 1977; since 1977 it has retreated more than 150 m. Nearly half the width of the snout has been lost, mainly on its western side, and the entire western section of the south-facing glacier has shrunk substantially. The observed fluctuation conforms with changes occurring on other tropical glaciers. Explanations concerning the reasons for the glacier recession are presented.

From observations and calculations of crack patterns in ice, it is suggested that a similar mechanism may account for cracking over a wide range of scales.

An X-band FM-CW radar was used to determine the feasibility of observing annual snow-accumulation layers in Antarctica with a high-resolution inexpensive radar system. The formation of layering boundaries, their resultant electromagnetic discontinuity and their detection by reflected energy are presented. Large returns from depths corresponding to reasonable positions for annual layers were found. The average accumulation rates calculated from the radar returns agree with those measured in a previous pit study done in the same area. The detection of the annual accumulation layers with this system implies a simple, inexpensive mobile radar could be used to profile large areas allowing the distorting effects of local topography to be removed.This type of system with a concurrent pit study could provide insight into the effect of sub-surface strata on spaceborne or airborne microwave remote sensing.

The recovery of past climatic conditions from ice-sheet borehole temperatures can best be accomplished using the calculus of variations (control methods) to minimize mismatch between the observed profile and a solution of the heat equation which depends on the unknown climate history. Here, we use control methods and a simple one-dimensional heat equation and the temperature depth profile observed at Dye-3 to infer the surface temperature of south Greenland over the last 30 000 years. This history illustrates the virtues that recommend control methods for future use in borehole-temperature analysis, namely: (i) it meets objective performance criteria, and (ii) its uncertainty can be established quantitatively. Our inferred climate history displays what may be the Younger Dryas cold event at about 9000 years BP. Borehole paleothermometry by control methods may thus resolve the controversy concerning the interpretation of Greenland ice-core isotope records.

A number of theoretical and empirical studies have indicated that many individual characteristics of ice formed by processes of net basal adfreezing may be sensitive to the rate of propagation of the freezing front through the reservoir concerned. The effects of freezing rate on the the stable-isotope chemistry and crystallography of ice, in addition to the disposition and character of included debris and gas are reported. Unidirectional freezing through a cylindrical reservoir containing various water–sediment mixtures has been conducted in the laboratory and the resulting cores analysed for debris and gas disposition and ice-crystal size and fabric. The data lend support to inferences drawn from studies concerned with specific ice properties and an idealized suite of characteristics is developed which may be diagnostic of basal ice formed by net adfreezing.

Fluctuations of glacier termini were studied in two regions in Alaska. In the Wrangell Mountains, 15 glaciers on Mount Wrangell, an active volcano, have been monitored over the past 30 years by surveying, photogrammetry and satellite. Results, which are consistent between different methods of measurement, indicate that the termini of most glaciers were stationary or retreating slightly. However, the termini of the 30 km long Ahtna Glacier and the smaller Center and South MacKeith Glaciers began to advance in the early 1960s and have advanced steadily between 5 and 18 m a−1 since then. These three glaciers flow from the active North Crater, where increased volcanic heating since 1964 has melted over 7 x 107 m3 of ice. We suspect that volcanic meltwater has changed the basal conditions for the three glaciers, resulting in their advance.

The terminus fluctuations of six tide-water and near-tide-water glaciers in College Fjord, Prince William Sound, have been monitored since 1931 by surveying, photogrammetry and, most recently, by satellite imagery. Harvard Glacier, a 40 km long tide-water glacier, has been advancing at an average rate of nearly 20 ma−1 since 1931, while the adjacent Yale Glacier has retreated at approximately 50 ma−1 during the same period though, for short periods, both of these rates have been much higher. The striking contrast between the terminus behavior of Yale and Harvard Glaciers, which parallel each other in the same fiord, and are derived from the same snowfield, supports the hypothesis that their terminus behavior is largely the result of dynamic controls rather than changes in climate.

Results from a detailed profile in a 5.54 m multi-year sea-ice core from the rift area in the southern part of George VI Ice Shelf are presented. Stratigraphy, stable isotopes and Na content are used to investigate the growth processes of the ice cover and to relate them to melting processes at the bottom of the ice shelf.

The thickest multi-year sea ice in the sampling area appears to be second-year sea ice that has survived one melt season. Combined salinity/stable-isotope analyses show large-scale sympathetic fluctuations that can be related to the origin of the parent water. Winter accretion represents half of the core length and mainly consists of frazil ice of normal sea-water origin. However, five major dilution events of sea water, with fresh-water input from the melting base of the ice shelf reaching 20% on two occasions, punctuate this winter accretion. Two of them correspond to platelet-ice production, which is often related to the freezing of ascending supercooled water from the bottom of the ice shelf.

Brackish ice occurs between 450 and 530 cm in the core. It is demonstrated that this results from the freezing of brackish water (Jeffries and others, 1989) formed by mixing of normal sea water with melted basal shelf ice, with dilution percentages of maximum 80% fresh water.

Jakobshavns Isbræ is a large, fast-moving ice stream/outlet glacier in West Greenland which ends at a floating, calving front. It drains about 6.5% of the area of the Greenland ice sheet. Studies of its surface morphology are described in this paper. The surface is relatively steep (0.01–0.03) and the thickness is large (up to 2600 m along the center line (Clarke and Echelmeyer, 1989)), indicating very high driving stresses (200–300 kPa). The ice stream is about 6 km wide and 85–90 km long, all of which is in an area of surface melting. The base of the ice stream, and of much of the drainage area, is below sea level. Marginal crevasse zones have a width on the order of the width of the ice stream itself. Unique surficial features are ice blisters and lakes; the latter have a sequence of ogive-like features on their floating ice cover which can be used to determine velocity. There is a pinning point near the terminus which may act as a stabilizing influence, possibly playing a role in halting, at least temporarily, a recent retreat of the terminus. Ice-thickness estimates at the terminus lead to a flux which is less than previously assumed by others (e.g. Bindschadler, 1984; Pelto and others, 1989) when estimating Jakobshavns Isbræ’s drainage basin to be nearly in balance.

The driving stresses on Jakobshavns Isbræ are an order of magnitude higher than those of the ice streams of West Antarctica. Its crevasse patterns are much less localized. Its relatively unconfined terminus is more comparable to that of relatively unbuttressed ice streams such as Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers than it is to other West Antarctic ice streams which terminate in large, confined ice shelves.

Annual accumulation records were derived from two firn cores drilled at GD03 (69° 00’S, 115° 30’E, 1835m) and GD15 (69° 00’S, 130° 48’E, 2155m), which are separated by 750 km along the 2000 m contour in eastern Wilkes Land. The accumulation records, spanning the period 1930–85, show that annual accumulation has increased by 25% from 1960 to 1985, resulting in the highest accumulation rates in the 55 year records. Annual accumulation layers were identified in the firn cores using a firn-stratigraphic model (based on the observed characteristics and variability of the seasonal snow-surface layer) together with seasonal oxygen-isotope ratios. The accumulation records support other evidence for a similar recent increase across Antarctica. The greater increase over the long-term mean for 1930–85 in eastern Wilkes Land was observed at GD15 which is located on a northeast aspect slope near Terre Adèlie. It is suggested that the increase is the result of changes in the general atmospheric circulation pattern which have produced a higher annual frequency of precipitation events.

Many glaciers in Svalbard and in other glacierized areas of the world are known to surge. However, the time series of observations required to assess the duration of fast motion is very restricted. Data on active-phase duration in Svalbard come from aerial photographs, satellite imagery, field surveys and airborne reconnaissance. Evidence on surge duration is available for eight Svalbard ice masses varying from 3 to 1250 km2. Worldwide, active-phase duration is recorded for less than 50 glaciers. Few observations are available on high polar ice masses. The duration of the active phase is significantly longer for Svalbard glaciers than for surge-type glaciers in other areas from which data are available. In Svalbard, the active phase may last from 3 to 10 years. By contrast, a surge duration of 1–2 years is more typical of ice masses in northwest North America, Iceland and the Pamirs. Ice velocities during the protracted active phase on Svalbard glaciers are considerably lower than those for many surge-type glaciers in these other regions. Mass is transferred down-glacier more slowly but over a considerably longer period. Svalbard surge-type glaciers do not exhibit the very abrupt termination of the active phase, over periods of a few days, observed for several Alaskan glaciers. The duration of the active phase in Svalbard is not dependent on parameters related to glacier size. The quiescent phase is also relatively long (50–500 years) for Svalbard ice masses. Detailed field monitoring of changing basal conditions through the surge cycle is required from surge-type glaciers in Svalbard in order to explain the significantly longer length of the active phase for glaciers in the archipelago, which may also typify other high polar ice masses. The finding that surge behaviour, in the form of active-phase duration, shows systematic differences between different regions and their environments has important implications for understanding the processes responsible for glacier surges.

Water is present in glaciers in the form of veins at the three-grain junctions. This water remains unfrozen even many degrees below the normal freezing point, mainly because it contains much of the soluble impurity content of a glacier, but also because of the microscopic curvature of the ice–water interfaces. As the temperature is lowered and the veins shrink, the concentration of impurities in them increases, and the curvature effect also increases. The predicted relation between vein size and temperature has now been verified by laboratory experiments.

Because of the latent heat of the vein water, the ice behaves macroscopically as a continuum with an anomalous specific heat capacity that depends strongly on temperature. From this point of view, a polythermal glacier is a single medium with continuously varying properties, rather than consisting of distinct cold and temperate phases with sharp boundaries between them. The paper sets up differential equations for heat diffusion in such a continuum. To explain the local uniformity of the vein system seen under the microscope, it is found necessary to include the effect of diffusion of solutes along the veins.

Solutions are presented for a model in which two semi-infinite slabs, initially having different temperatures, impurity concentrations and vein sizes, are instantaneously brought into contact. In this way, transition thicknesses between cold and temperate ice are estimated, and also the velocities of various kinds of waves that are generated from the original discontinuity at the interface.

A technique to estimate undisturbed ice temperature is discussed for sensors placed in boreholes that have been heated to the melting point during drilling, and for which only a limited time span of temperature record is available. A short temperature record after the hole refreezes commonly results when using hot-water or steam drills, where measurements are constrained by logistics, ice deformation, sensor drift or other problems, or where the refreezing time is long because of near-freezing ice temperatures or large hole sizes. Short data records are also typical in ongoing drilling programs where temperature information may be necessary for the program itself. Building on analyses by Lachenbruch and Brewer (1959) and a numerical model by Jarvis and Clarke (1974), it is shown that estimates of undisturbed temperatures can be made from records of temperature that extend only marginally beyond the initial refreezing. Complex effects of hole size, heating history, and the thermodynamic and geometrical effects of a moving boundary (the freezing borehole walls) are important to temperature decay immediately after freeze-up, so that the standard technique of comparing temperature decay to an inverse of time model is not applicable, and comparsion has to be made to a numerical model of heat flow to a refreezing borehole. Data from Ice Stream B, Antarctica, are compared to the numerical model to illustrate the technique. Data are also compared to simpler (inverse time) thermal models, and a potential for error is pointed out, since a short data record can be spuriously matched with the simpler, one or two free-parameter, models.

The authors describe a new method that allows an accurate, cheap and quick characterization of snow grains from natural snowpacks. The method is based on stopping all metamorphism of snow grains by immersing them in cold isooctane. Snow grains are then carried from the field, stored in a cold room and easily observed through a microscope. It then makes possible recording of snow-grain pictures in a state similar to their natural state, even after storage of several months.
