The lichen family Thelotremataceae was studied in Thailand and Malaysia (including one specimen from Indonesia). Of the 30 new species recognized, 26 are recorded from Thailand: Myriotrema grandisporum, M. khaoyaianum, M. khuntanense, M. rongklaense, M. subanamaliense, M. subgranulosum, M. subminutum, M. thailandicum, M. whalleyanum, Ocellularia brunneospora, O. diospyrosis, O. flavescens, O. inthanonensis, O. kansriae, O. krathingensis, O. melanophthalma, O. neoleucina, O. peremergens, O. pluriporoides, O. rhicnoporoides, O. subleucina, O. wolseleyana, Thelotrema laemense, T. mongkolsukii, T. phliuense and T. rhododiscum; and 4 from Sarawak: M. coppinsii, M. muluense, O. neoperforata, and O. roseotecta.Additional notes are provided on Ocellularia palaeoamplior Aptroot & Sipman and Thelotrema isidiophorum (Kremp.) The new corticolous lichen genus Krogia and species K. coralloidesare described from humid forest in Mauritius. The genus shows affinities with Phyllopsora, but differs in characters of the ascus, ascospores, and thallus anatomy. The ascal characters make its inclusion in the Bacidiaceae or Phyllopsoraceae problematic. The lichen contains boninic acid and an apparently related compound.

A new corticolous species of Buellia is described from La Palma and La Gomera (Canary Islands). It is mainly characterized by its strongly ornamented, (l-2)-3-septate ascospores with apical and septa thickenings, which follow an ascospore-ontogeny of type B, and its chemistry. The new species is compared with the related Buellia lauricassiae (Fée) Mü. Arg. and B. lauricassiaeoides Aptroot. Illustrations of the ascospores of B. laurocanariensis and B. lauricassiaeoides are presented. A habit photograph of the new species is also provided.

Montane old-growth forests on the windward slopes of interior mountain ranges in British Columbia support high loadings of arboreal lichens. These lichens represent a major source of readily labile plant material and potentially play an important role in ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Given the role of winter storms in scouring lichens from within the canopy and the extended length of winter snowpack, from November through to May or even early June, in these ecosystems, the decomposition of lichen litterfall should be heavily influenced by placement within the snowpack. We have examined this factor by placing litter bags containing samples of the hair lichens, Alectoria sarmentosa and Bryoria spp., on top of the winter snowpack in the Cariboo Mountains. Samples were set out in early- (8 Nov.) mid- (16 Jan.) and late- (22 Mar.) winter and subsequently retrieved on spring snow-melt (22 May). Lichen samples that were buried in the lower snowpack all winter long (196 days) lost two-thirds of their original mass. In contrast lichens placed on the snowpack in mid- (127 days) or late-winter (61 days) lost only 6-15% of their total mass, far less than would be predicted on the basis of time in snowpack alone. Spot measurements showed that the snowpack environment effectively buffers litter samples from extreme winter conditions. All lichen samples placed within the snowpack showed much higher C/N ratios on removal, indicating rapid leaching of readily soluble cellular constituents in the snowpack environment. These findings indicate that the snowpack environment plays a major role in decomposition processes in these high-elevation forests and reinforces our view that lichens are a readily labile nutrient source within these ecosystems.

Four anthraquinones were isolated from the foliose lichen, Lasallia papulosa (Ach.) Llano. Two of the anthraquinones are known compounds, previously isolated from Lasallia papulosa, while the other two were reported previously as secondary metabolites from laboratory-cultured Nephroma laevigatum, and are isolated here for the first time from lichens in their natural habitat. All compounds were characterized by UV spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The products were identified as 7-chloroemodin, valsarin (7-chloro-5-hydroxyemodin), 5-chloro-1-O-methylemodin and 5-chloro-1-O-methyl-ω-hydroxyemodin.

A characteristic, sterile lichen genus with homoiomerous thallus containing terpenoids is described, with one subtropical species, Kroswia crystalliferum sp. nov., occurring scattered in Africa from Kenya south to the Cape, southern India (with Sri Lanka) and Taiwan. Another temperate species, Kroswia gemmascens (Nyl.) comb, nov., is restricted to Eastern Asia. in spite of its gelatinous, homoiomerous thallus, the genus appears to belong to the Pannariaceae.

Verrucaria cootapatambensis sp. nov. is described from sandstone boulders in an alpine, snow-melt creek in Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia.

There is evidence to suggest that part of the recent changes in the lichen flora of the Netherlands is attributable to an increase in temperature. Changes which have occurred over the last 22 years were studied in detail, and were subjected to a statistical treatment by comparing the change of species to their latitudinal distribution and to ecological determinants.

All 329 epiphytic and terrestrial lichen species occurring in the Netherlands were considered in relation to their world distribution. Arctic-alpine/boreo-montane species appear to be declining, while (sub)tropical species are invading. The proportion of increasing species is by far the largest among the wide-tropical lichens (83%), and smallest among the arctic-alpine/boreo-montane lichens (14%). None of the wide-tropical species was found to decrease, while 50% of the arctic-alpine/boreomontane species show a decline.

Long-term monitoring of the epiphytic lichen flora in the province of Utrecht from 1979 onwards shows that the total number of taxa present increased from 95 in 1979 to 172 in 2001, while the average number of taxa per site increased from 7·5 to 18·9. The rate of increase was greatest by far between 1989 and 1995. The majority of the species (152 taxa or 85%) show a gross increase, only 17 species (10%) show a decrease.

A detailed analysis of these data using multiple regression suggests global warming as an additional cause for recent changes, next to decreasing SO⊂2 and increasing NH⊂3. Changes appear to be correlated initially (1979-1995) only with toxitolerance and nutrient demand. Changes between 1995 and 2001, however, appear positively correlated to both temperature and nutrient demand, indicating a recent and significant shift towards species preferring warm circumstances, independent from, and concurrent with changes due to nutrient availability.

This is the first paper reporting long-term floristic changes for lichens that appear to be correlated significantly with increasing temperatures. We suggest that future lichen monitoring programmes also pay attention to effects of climatic change, instead of focusing on air pollution effects only.

The reactivation of net photosynthesis and dark respiration from water vapour and from liquid water in the lichen Ramalina capitata var. protecta (H. Magn.) Nimis from sheltered habitats in Central Spain was investigated. CO2 gas-exchange response and thallus water content were measured in the laboratory as dry thalli were allowed to equilibrate by water vapour uptake under different relative humidities, and as saturated thalli dried. Water content of thalli from different habitats was also measured in the field during rainfall. The results show that the lichen is very efficient in using water vapour from the air for photosynthesis. Net photosynthetic rates were measured at very low water potentials (up to – 26-9 Megapascal) with water contents of the thalli below 30% dry weight. Maximum net photosynthetic rates measured after water vapour uptake were in some cases similar to those obtained after hydration by liquid water, while respiration rates were always lower after water vapour uptake, indicating a relatively larger activation of the photobiont. Moreover, photosynthetic rates at thallus water contents below 60% dry weight were higher when hydration was achieved through water vapour uptake than with liquid water. Field measurements had shown that this lichen reached water contents through water vapour absorption of 40% dry weight that would allow a positive balance of CO2 uptake. Possible ecological implications of differences in photosynthetic activation depending on the water source are discussed in terms of the carbon gain under natural conditions of this ombrophobous lichen.

Fuscoderma papuanorum is described as the first species of this genus to occur so close to the Equator, being part of the austral element of the New Guinea flora. The genus appears to be of considerable age.

Nine new species of foliicolous lichens are described from Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Station, Veracruz, Mexico: Asterothyrium atromarginatum sp. nov. (Asterothyriaceae), Enterographa perez-higaredae sp. nov. (Roccellaceae), Gyalectidium barbatum sp. nov., G. pallidum sp. nov., G. ulloae sp. nov. (Gomphillaceae), Opegrapha heliabravoa sp. nov., O. tuxtlensis sp. nov. (Roccellaceae), Pocsia alvari sp. nov. (Verrucariaceae) and Tricharia sublancicarpa sp. nov. (Gomphillaceae). Pycnidia are reported for the first time in Coenogonium hypophyllum (Vězda) Kalb & Lücking.

The chemical and ultrastructural features of the interface formed by different biotypes of saxicolous lichen species with their rock substrata were investigated in the semiarid habitat of the SE Iberian Peninsula and the relationships between the bioweathering patterns observed and lichen colonization selectivity towards the different rock substrata evaluated. Xanthoria parietina was able to fix to the rock substratum by the adherence of single cell walls from the lower cortex. Neofuscelia pulla used rhizines and loose groups of hyphae for attachment of the thallus to the rock. Colonization by the foliose lichen species was confined to the rock surface, while Diploschistes diacapsis was also able grow below the surface showing two types of hyphal growth. Minerals in close contact with cell walls were biochemically and biophysically weathered, but hyphae showing calcium oxalate crystals did not appear to be directly involved in the patterns observed. The textural characteristics of the substratum seemed to be related to the type of microorganism colonization: sedimentary rocks were more deeply colonized by lichens and other chasmolithic microorganisms than volcanic material. Calcium oxalate crystals were found in the medulla of N. pulla but not at the lichen-substratum interface. Crustose lichens such as D. diacapsis showed calcium oxalate crystals in the upper cortex and over the outside of fungal medullary hyphae but not in direct contact with the rock surface. Calcium oxalate precipitation seems to be related to the different metabolic activities of the mycobiont within the lichen thallus and to different species. D. diacapsis inhibits the growth of other microorganisms in close proximity to the thallus, whereas foliose species were associated with several communities of microorganisms.

A key is provided to all genera currently included in the cyanobacterial lichen family Lichinaceae as well as some close relatives. Characteristic features of the family are described and illustrated.

A new species, Cladonia singhii Ahti & Dixit (type from the state of Arunachal Pradesh), is described. A further seven Cladonia species, C. corniculata, C. kanewskii, C. laii, C. luteoalba, C. mauritiana, C. mongolica and C. rei, are reported as new to the recent checklist of lichens of the Indian subcontinent. The presence of C. cartilaginea in India is confirmed.

Epiphytic lichen diversity in a boggy stand of Norway spruce (Picea abies) was studied in the eastern Harz Mountains, northern Germany. Spruce trees at wet sites were affected by forest dieback, whereas trees on drier sites remained unaffected. Lichen diversity was higher on diebackaffected trees than on healthy ones. The foliose lichen Hypogymnia physodes was significantly more frequent on dead trees, whereas the crustose, extremely toxitolerant Lecanora conizaeoides occurred more frequently on healthy trees. Stemflow concentrations of NH⊂4⊃+, NO⊂3⊃-, PO⊂3⊃-, and SO⊂4⊃2- were lower on affected trees. This is attributed to reduced interception from the atmosphere due to needle loss. Cover of H. physodes decreased with increasing mean SO⊂4⊃2- concentration in stemflow. The total of lichen species per sample tree also decreased with increasing SO⊂4⊃2- concentration in stemflow, indicating that most species reacted in a similar way as H. physodes. Cover of L. conizaeoides increased with increasing SO⊂4⊂2- concentration, but decreased at higher SO⊂4⊃2- concentrations. Bark chemistry had a minor influence on lichen diversity.

Ten foliose and placodioid species of Physciaceae are reported from the National Park Torres del Paine and from other areas in southernmost Chile. Phaeophyscia constipate and Physconia perisidiosa are reported as new to the Southern Hemisphere, Phaeophyscia endococcina var. endococcina and Phaeorrhiza nimbosa as new to South America, and Dimelaena oreina and Physcia kalbii as new to Chile. The latter was recorded only from the island of Chiloé. Dimelaena appears to be rare in Magallanes and has been recorded only from one steppe locality. Phaeophyscia constipate and Phaeorrhiza nimbosa appear to be confined to the driest steppes, in areas with occurrences of rock outcrops associated with calcareous soil. Physconia muscigena has a similar habitat ecology, but a wider distribution, and is quite common. Physconia perisidiosa and Physcia adscendens were found to be very common in all bioclimatic zones surveyed in the lowland of Torres del Paine. The Physciaceae species treated here are all bipolar or subcosmopolitan, and belong to genera lacking an austral or South American element in the area studied, in contrast to the pattern in all other reasonably large macrolichen groups, except among cetrarioid genera. Their habitat ecology is also very similar to conditions known in the Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, other widely distributed Northern Hemisphere species such as Physcia stellaris and P. aipolia have known distribution patterns in South America which are disjunct and northern and very different from those of the species treated here.

The lichen genus Calycidium Stirt. (Calycidiaceae, Lecanorales, ‘Caliciales’ s. lat.) contains two species: C. cuneatum Stirt., distributed in Australia (Tasmania) and New Zealand, and C. polycarpum (Colenso) Wedin, comb, nov., distributed in Argentina, Australia (Tasmania), Chile and New Zealand. The morphology, chemistry, ecology and distribution of the two species is discussed, as is the taxonomic position of the genus. Calycidium is reported as new to Argentina.

High performance thin-layer chromatography/thin-layer chromatography, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy analysis of thallus and lichen-rock interface samples, were undertaken to characterize biomineralization products in Fuscidea cyathoides, Ochrolechia tartarea, Ophioparma ventosa, and Pertusaria coralline, growing on sandstone in western Norway. Whewellite (monohydrate form of Ca oxalate) was found in the thallus of all species, but not in any of the weathering rinds beneath the species. A significantly higher amount of whewellite was detected in the thalli of F. cyathoides and O. ventosa than in the other two species. There were only a few differences in whewellite occurrence between the thallus edge and centre samples in the four species. HPTLC/TLC and SEM analysis indicate that lichen compounds occur within the rock beneath some of the lichen specimens. Only divaricatic acid was observed within the weathering rind beneath O. ventosa. No lichen substances were found in the weathering rind beneath F. cyathoides and P. corallina, whereas gyrophoric and lecanoric acids were found in the weathering rind beneath O. tartarea.
